Indie Games [June] Now Voting - Post 666

Our 2d rhythm shmup Beat Beat Shooter is still in development but i figured that it wouldn't hurt posting about it in here to get some opinions :)

Cross-posting from the indie Dev thread:

Visually not many changes from the last screenshots I posted but this time we've also made a trailer that shows a little more of the game as well as the music and rhythm elements that go with it:

http://youtu.be/URLiLaweeio

Its my first time recording gameplay footage so the video may seem a little choppy but the game runs much smoother than that. On that note, which application would you recommend for recording?

Also we've made a much more mobile friendly version of our web: http://missingdragonfly.com/ there are still some little details to fix but its up and running. And from now on we are going to be using our twitter account so if anyone here needs followers for their game/group/studio/younameit we are happpy to follow and be followed back! Just testing something, please ignore this :D

New browser based game that was directly inspired by Candy Box, but is quite different from it.

A Dark Room -

I have it running on a tab, pretty interesting. I still don't know how to get scales thought. You can only buy them or get them from the traps?

Is there a Sentinel demo that doesn't require unity3d in the browser? Like a real windows demo?

I get them from baited traps quite a lot. Don't believe you can get them from unbaited traps, although I leave the game running in the background also so I imagine that a lot is getting by me.

You can get them from unbaited traps, just not as often. You'll get more if you have more traps, obviously, heh.

One of those games you don't really want to spoil by explaining what happens, but if you liked Candy Box then you'll probably dig A Dark Room, though it has a more cohesive and interesting story than CB. You can probably complete it in less than a day, but it will require multiple playthroughs to see everything.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for these types of games, but man does A Dark Room get exploration and discovery so right compared to the 'open world' games from Bethesda and Rockstar.

Nice, I loved Candy Box

Looks nice!

Thanks Hofmann :) Nice screenshots in there. Don't worry about the descriptions.

Because I just found out what you are doing ;p

Those guys really should crosspost more in this thread as well, sigh. Thanks for mentioning.

Indie GAF devs feel really strongly about GAF's netiquette, they need a constant 'OK' to pimp their works outside their thread. Believe me they want nothing more than exposure outside of it though, which may seem an odd combination. Most dream of the day a fellow gaffer finds their game and posts it as its own OT, so if you spot a game you're interested in over there go nuts!

A Dark Room os addicting, the story is more serious and coherent than Candy Box. The narrative is tied to the gameplay and is interesting to imagine what happened to the world in this game.

I posted a few times in that thread that they should feel free to crosspost anything thats playable, or has screenshots. I just feel like a record when mentioning that over and over again. :p

Same with Indie game threads for smaller Indie games that dont get mentioned in here btw. We really should carry together all threads and games people on GAF care about in here. Its easier to remember and archive all games in these threads than forgetting about them 2 weeks later. It also allows people to check one constant thread series for every game that came up instead of missing half of those 1-2 page threads.

100% understandable. However, perhaps we should encourage to post them in this thread, as I guess we all feel it's positive for everyone involved. Perhaps a message to that effect in the OP? As long as they don't post over and over about their game, it should be OK, right?

Edit: Hadn't seen (refreshed) Toma's post above. To clarify, I was suggesting posting a very obvious (bolded/own chapted header) message about HEY ALL INDIEGAF DEVELOPERS PLEASE POST YOUR GAMES HERE.

You're preaching to the converted here. I'm just trying to shine some light on the subject with some perspective I've gleaned from the other side.

A lot of the very creative folks making games on their own are busy, shy and considerate people seeking legitimate fan attention/feedback while trying their best not to feel like "douchebag spammers", which is how most of the press make them feel by ignoring them, forcing the situation. This in turn leads to a hesitation to "spam" their home, GAF, especially in the absence of demand. This is where it's up to us indie fans to seek them out and make them feel welcome, over and over because they're just people, not big corporations ;) Oh and make OTs if we like a game.

My message to indie GAF is be brave, be confident, use common sense/good judgement and let the members here decide where that line is. You want fans and they're potentially here and right now all I'm hearing is demand :)

Edit: Another tip for indie game fans. The developers you love have a million interesting stories to tell but they don't realise they're interesting stories until someone asks them and they tell it. Would anyone be up for doing GAF on Indie GAF interviews to try and extract some hidden gems?

Posted again in the thread over there.

I sort of want to avoid cluttering the OP even more tbh, so I guess I'll post over there again once in a while

Okay boss.

Progress on Malebolgia:

Did a good bit of work the past week and added in some elements. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the cape. At the very least I will edit the model a bit more. But the big problem is Unity's skinned cloth system, which isn't working all that well at the moment. It would be great if they fix it up soon, so I could use it more frequently, even to simulate hair and fur movement.

I'll try to get a nice trailer up by the end of the week.

Nice, thanks! Already told you, but you really have a great art style going on. More screenshots certainly dont hurt :)

LTTP on this one, but Little inferno is goddamn amazing. It has a really potent personal commentary, and one that it tells through it's mechanics. I thought it was more of a toy, but finding combos can be strangely compelling.

The best part about Little Inferno is the dark storytelling it's able to do with very little actual exposition.

Yea, amazingly well done.
It's a game about wasting time. At the end it asks you to go back and think about all the time you've wasted on all the things that you didn't really love, or didn't really push you forward personally. As someone who just turned 30, and is actively re-evaluating his life, it hit me right in the feels.

I recommend Campster's video on it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8nwRCW-tJU

So Freedom Planet put up a new demo. Same stage, essentially, but with all the various updates that've been made throughout its alpha (notably widescreen, HUD tweaks, faster recharge on the energy meter, buffs to Carol's bike, the replacement of the Sonic-like spin attack, etc) and graphical updates, both to the level and all the sprites that populate it.

Personally, I think it's improvements all-around, although there's been a bit of backlash over the manual spin attack removal. I don't think it's that huge a deal, since I preferred to attack enemies with melee than spinning, and it was a little too close to Sonic for comfort. Lilac does gain a ground-based Dragon Cyclone to make up for it, though. Carol doesn't, but then she has a friggin' OP bike. YMMV on this one, although Strife's been open to opinions on the matter.

As an alpha tester for the game, I gotta say I really like how it's shaping up so far, although it's still pretty early. We can play most, if not all, of the stages that show up on the Greenlight page, and they're even better than Dragon Valley is. I do have some nitpicks here and there, but overall, I think it's coming together to be a very fun game.

Speaking of Greenlight, the game's apparently 97% of the way to Top 100 status! Just need a bit of a push...

(Disclaimer: I am not a member of the development team, although I am a mod of the game's forum; I'm just a very enthusiastic fan.)

This was posted in the steam thread, so sorry if I am repeating content for anyone who visits both threads, but I found a potentially rather fun game in the form of Speedrunners. Looks like a bit of an N+ type game with some Hook Champ (from iOS) thrown in. Could be awesome, although I feel they perhaps should have chosen a name which is not impossible to search for in Google. I've signed up for the beta, so if I get in I'll post some impressions if they allow it.

Can't say I was too impressed with the last demo, but meh I'll give it another chance. I think I'm just bitter that my high score was beaten so embarrassingly quickly.

Finally got my copy of Rooks Keep today.

And I'm not disappointing, apart from the fact that it's not getting any exposure at all, not even in the country it's been made.

Game did get exposure back in 2010 in RockPaperShotgun, but that was when it was still Pre-Alpha and just "Battle Chess".

Now it's a full fledged Arena + Chess games with an unbelievable amount of options and features especially for a 3 man team.

Just to give an idea, there's 16 maps for arena gameplay. And 8 for Chess and they all play and look completely different.

I'm not kidding about the options, think it and it probably has it. Don't like campers, there's an option for that. Don't like corpses, or blood, can turn off either of them.

Want a Cluster ****, with 32 bots on small map. Nothing stops you.

I see the Developers have put it on Desura, which I think is a pretty good move. Steam just can't accommodate all these awesome Indie Games (think they underestimates how many brilliant unknowns titles there are already. Just wish Desura had a bigger user base. Desura needs to improve, and improve fast.

Desura Update!

Glob - Free
2D reflex based platforming game. The screenshot might not look like much, but I highly recommend checking out the video on Desura of someone playing this game how its meant to be played. You cant help but be awed a little.

DeCalc - Free Demo/ 2,49€
http://www.desura.com/games/decalc
This wont appeal to many people I guess, but its a mathematics puzzle game! You get the result and need to arrange the numbers to account for the result you are given. I can imagine this to be surprisingly addicting. Free 20 level demo if someone feels like checking it out.

Alltynex - Free Demo/ 7,49€
http://www.desura.com/games/alltynex-second
http://www.desura.com/games/reflex
Kamui
Apparently a shmup fan favourite in 3 parts, never heard of it though. Might check out the demo next month.

Binary Maze - Free Demo/ 2,49€
A top down puzzle game where you are controlling two characters at the same time.

Polygon Storm - 1,99€
http://www.desura.com/games/polygon-storm
Simple "evade the enemies" highscore game. Might have screwed up balance though if its too easy to just play for 3 hours straight. Unfortunate it doesnt have a demo.

Hypersuper Cannon - Free
http://www.desura.com/games/hypersuper-cannon
Another fancy retro style game, but this is a) free and b) supposedly very hard. Havent tried it yet, but apparently you guide projectiles with your main ship thing to destroy the enemies.

I tried this out a couple of days ago, and it is pretty hard. There are 4 cannons, one on each side of the screen, and your 'ship' is more like a targeting diamond. The 4 cannons follow your diamond, but when they fire, their initial shells don't seem to damage things much, you actually have to reflect the shells using your ship to actually damage things (or maybe it does more damage that way I couldn't figure it out). Quite an interesting concept, though I found it slightly frustrating.

Also, not sure if it counts as Indie, but I've found myself playing Dust: An Elysian Tail the last few days. Really enjoying it so far, but I need to find more time to play it, along with a bunch of other games I have hitting my backlog at the moment. >.<

Edit: Also, already pre-ordered Rogue Legacy, so there goes a whole bunch more of my time... I think it's time to tell my MMO friends to stop bugging me to try out every "ground-breaking" or "wow-killing" MMO...

Urrg, that reminds me I need to finish that game off. Next week comes the duel behemoths of Super Splatters and Rogue Legacy and I need to try and finish at least some games before July comes around.

Not the type of game I'm into, but the idea looks interesting. At least for me the Desura client is faster than Steam.
