I'm sure he scanned it in and then played around with the mech.
Rather than model it from scratch.

Dont think so.

Hi!
wow, I did not expect this response, I posted it yesterday before I went to sleep
and now I am seeing it at front page, thank you very much for your answers!
I don´t know what to say, the whole model is made with polygons, I started modelling Jesus based on a photo of the human body. Later I rigged the character and placed it in the position based on a photo of the Pietà which I used as referen, I made th necessary deformations to make it look as close as possible to the original. Then i continued with Maria, the part wich tool me the longest time was the thorax of Maria since it contains a lot of folds in her clothes. Her dress was easier.

This guy did NOT scan that in he poly modeled it from reference, how the hell are you gonna go scan that thing

A Korean guy at my school patch modeled the same sculpture this semester, and I think his is actually better although he hasn't postet it on CGTalk yet.

Lord seeing that thing makes me cry at my abilities. I was messing with maya a few days ago and all i could make was a round ball with sticks on it that picks crap up. Thats just insane details.

That's pretty damn close. Seeing the real thing in person is something else though, the sculpture is so beautiful in real life.

It's a curiously beautiful piece, given that the Mary depicted would be a 7 foot tall lady if she were standing upright.

It's actually because of that, that the composition is so great tho.

Bad art. Sorry, someone had to say it.

j/k

That's EXTREMELY impressive considering all the folds in the cloth and stuff.

just to add a little nitpick, the modeler totally messed up mary's face. why is she smiling?

just wondering,

are there any current artists that are doing real life sculptures like this? If not, I always wonder if it's because there is no longer interest in this type of sculpture, or is his skill just THAT amazing. Because I'm sure there are better tools now.

Well jesus fuck.....this whole time I thought the second picture was the textured version or something.......I'm not that impressed anymore. Still, I wish I could do that.

I think it's just the lighting providing the difference in how her facial expression appears. The shadows on the model do a lot to mold her eyes, and even her mouth, into a different perceived state.

There are sculptors doing this sort of stuff now, but it's hard to make a living off classical sculpture, and many modern sculptors do the whole hobby kit scene. That said, Michelangelo is insanely good, and very few would be able to come close to what he does

Well....actually folds and little details aren't all that hard to replicate.
Smooth faces are the real challenge, they never seem right and we humans excel at pointing out little flaws in faces.

That said, it's still highly impressive stuff.
