[Insider Gaming] CAPCOM Will Use AI, But Not For Game Content

With the ever-increasing impact and growth of AI, Capcom has issued a statement during a March 23 'Company Briefing for Individual Investors', signaling its intention to steer away from AI in game content.

Here's the response in full:

"We do not implement generative AI-generated materials in game content. On the other hand, we plan to actively utilize technologies that contribute to improving efficiency and productivity in the game development process. Therefore, we are currently verifying how to use it in various job fields, such as graphics and sound programs."

On one hand, Capcom does not want AI content present in the final game, but the company is going to use AI in the development process.

The only reason they are making this statement is because Nvidia threw them under the bus with their abysmal DLSS5 presentation, and everybody is dunking on them.

Capcom don't want to be associated to this shit-show, but you have to wonder how and why Requiem was featured in the Nvidia's presentation to begin with :rolleyes:

I don't know who's currently in charge of Capcom; it seems to be Haruhiro Tsujimoto, but since Resident Evil 7 and with the RE Engine, he's greatly elevated the brand and significantly increased the company's reputation.

The same goes for Konami; their recent arrival has made a strong comeback.

Capcom's greatest creation and greatest achievement is its RE Engine.
 
They are looking really silly posting this right after allowing the abomination of dlss 5 on their beloved RE.

Though personally I don't really have an issue with the use of AI content in game as long as it doesn't look like low quality AI slop.
Like if I'm playing a RE and I'm exploring some apartment I really don't give a shit if the 3D models for the toaster and microwave in the kitchen were made with AI. I've seen some demos of AI services that can even turn pictures into 3D models (so it's not even stealing art), don't know how usable those are for gaming right now but I'm sure more tools like that will launch in the future that will be usable on a professional level.

I was very pleased with all the Concept Art bonuses in Requiem, they were clearly proud of no AI use in that game's art and design.

They didn't used AI already for RE9 story? I refuse to believe an human mind has written this turd.
 
There mere fact companies like Capcom are, at this point in time, publicly stating they are still in the experimental phase of finding out how to properly use this tech tells you everything about it.
 
I genuinely don't think there's an issue with using it to prototype or experiment, but it shouldn't be deployed in the final product. But we'll see how serious they are about this statement... obviously, their participation in the DLSSlop thing doesn't exactly help convince anyone.
 

On May 13, Capcom announced its financial results for the last quarter of the fiscal year ending in 2026. In its report, Capcom disclosed that its research and use of generative AI are part of its ongoing investments in its popular IPs. As with many companies, they also stated that the technology is primarily utilized to enhance efficiency with the development process.

"As it is crucial to maintain and improve its core strengths, consisting of its proprietary advanced technologies and development capabilities, the Company continues to aggressively pursue growth investments aimed at building its development environment," said Capcom in its earnings report.

"This includes research and development into cutting-edge technologies such as its proprietary game engine, other development investments, and the use of generative AI to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the game development processes. Through these efforts, the company is working to further expand and deepen the penetration of its content and corporate brand worldwide by consistently releasing content to the market and increasing catalog sales, thereby enhancing its brand value."

Capcom also provided a graphical representation of how the technology will be utilized moving forward. As part of one of the slides in its earnings presentation, Capcom stated, "AI utilized to improve development efficiency and productivity
A tool to streamline routine tasks, freeing up time for creative work." This statement was accompanied by a graphic noting that the use of the new technology has freed up time previously spent on research, draft generation, user analysis, interactive manuals, error checks, meeting notes, and more.
 

Speaking from Google Cloud Next 2026 in Las Vegas to 4Gamer.net, Inoue-san talks about how Capcom uses AI during development, and clarifies that Capcom is not using the tools to create art.

This follows on from Google Cloud's Jack Buser saying, "I think what players don't realise is that their favourite games right now were already built with AI," in April, suggesting that Capcom was one example of a developer utilising AI.

Now, Inoue-san seems to be clarifying how Capcom uses AI, and that AI cannot replace human artists because of "sensibility," among other things.

"AI is developing rapidly and possessing increasingly advanced intelligence. At times, it surpasses most humans, and I feel that it has even surpassed the best humans," Inoue-san tells 4Gamer.net (via machine translation). "On the other hand, what we in the entertainment industry consider extremely important in relation to this intelligence is 'sensibility.' Even AI with the highest level of intelligence still falls short of our creators in terms of sensibility. Therefore, focusing on sensibility is more efficient in terms of resource concentration from the perspective of human capital management, and is also important for coexistence with creators."

An example that Inoue-san gives is with debugging. "The AI reports to a debugging check agent, but instead of leaving it to humans, an agent that checks the director's concept first evaluates it. A huge number of such checks and evaluations are performed while humans are sleeping," Inoue-san explains. "Then, it screens out things that are highly likely to be 'wrong from the game's concept' and presents them as a general framework. Therefore, it feels like the AI has checked everything in advance, and humans are not required to perform a huge amount of checking work."

Capcom technical director, Kazuki Abe, was also present and wanted to emphasise the importance of human creators. "The goal is to replace the routine tasks that arise in conjunction with creative work with AI," Abe-san explains. "Humans must always guarantee quality, so humans control the input where commands are given to the AI and the output where the results are produced. We are building a system that allows the AI to efficiently handle the intermediate steps."

Game development has become increasingly difficult and expensive over the course of the last few decades as the demand for visual fidelity and mechanical complexity has increased, and Inoue-san wants to use the new technology to return to tradition.

"The idea is simple. We want to return to the state of the past, when people discussed interesting ideas, reached a consensus, and then brought them to life," Inoue-san continues. "Back then, everyone involved in development fully understood the context and intentions, which allowed for maximum performance.

"That's why we want to provide a contextual model for person-to-person communication and clarify intentions. Our ultimate goal is to provide a medium that facilitates collaboration."
 
Now this needs to be said because the people of the internet have not yet accepted the new technology because they are stupid as usual.

About 2 years from now and the use of AI will be normal in all games. Anyone who does not use this tool is left behind...
 
This shouldn't even be news anymore. Like…everyone uses AI.

It's like if I texted all my friends this morning and proclaimed that I'm using AI for stuff.

"Yeah dude, where have you been the last 3 years?"


As long as games are good, I don't care what they use.
