[Insider Gaming] Microsoft Removes DLC Discounts For Xbox Game Pass Members, Will Get MS Rewards Points Instead

Microsoft has removed DLC discounts from Xbox Game Pass, scaling back one of the service's longtime member perks. The change comes with no announcement from Microsoft.

Historically, Xbox Game Pass subscribers would be eligible for 10% off DLC and other add-ons for games. It was first seen to be for Call of Duty Points, but then was found that games with previous discounts such as Starfield, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Forza Horizon 5 no longer have the discount.

When Microsoft first announced the changes, it included a change to its Rewards program. No longer will users be able to use points to purchase any sort of extension of their service directly. In addition, they've changed how players earn Rewards, saying that "Ultimate subscribers can now earn up to $100 per year in the store just by playing games".

"With our upgraded Rewards program, players can get up to 30% value on select Game Pass games, with 4x points on purchases of games and add-ons, 10% back in points on select Game Pass library titles and add-ons, and up to 20% off select Game Pass games," Microsoft said.

So, instead of the discount on add-ons, you now get more points to then turn around and use back in the Microsoft Store. Based on that concept, it stops the company from potentially losing any money on one-time purchases, and keeps players in an ecosystem cycle.

Again, none of that was mentioned in the lengthy post put out by Xbox.

Insider Gaming has reached out to Microsoft for an official reasoning as to why the DLC benefit was removed. Should a response be received, it will be added to this story.

Updated with newer article. This isn't just COD. Will ask for title change

Update #2. Instead of discounts, Game Pass members will get Rewards points.

This is why you dont hire bean counters at the head of your company. And make no mistake Satya is the ultimate bean counter. there is a reason why 10-12% of the Fortunte 500 companies have indian CEOs. All they care about is penny pinching. Innovation, customer service, consumer loyalty be damned.

Business is businessing!
I work for a heartless corporation and trust me this is business as usual. Somewhere a room of investors are jizzing in their pants.

You don't get much pennies in the long therm if you don't invest in consumer loyalty and customer service.

The problem is that MS makes way more money elsewhere, unlike Sony they don't get much benefits in keeping that part of the business running (Azure, Office, Windows, etc.) they have huge margins, and the money they want to spend on investments to grow the business is not going to go on their side project, not with all the buzz AI is getting these days.

So they're trying to see if gamers will foot the bill enough to warrant top MS executives, and investors, attention.

I own shares of MS, and I would love them to sell xbox altogether.

Just pull the plug on gamepass. Get it over with. Your platform would actually benefit from it.

There's nothing left other than gamepass.

Their remaining customer base mostly consists of a bunch of lemmings that they've trained to not spend any money. You just can't undo close to a decades worth of "cheap cheap cheap/ free free free" messaging and encouragement overnight. Xbox and their executives effectively told these people that games are worthless and are not worth spending money on or owning.

If they expect all those people who have been indoctrinated to suddenly switch gears overnight and start finding money under their couch to send to them then they are in for a nasty surprise.

Ew, so instead of putting the discount up front, they're giving you 10% in equivalent points and it's on "select" gamepass games. And that's for Ultimate. For the tier down, it's 5%. I wouldn't be surprised if they next start expiring points after a time like all the other places that use points.

Its because you all made fun of their hyper realistic (I need to stay out of that A.I thread) Unicorn solider skin. You hurt the feeling of a company trying to provide joy and happiness.... at an extortionate cost. Shame on all of you.

This seems dumb - it's an incentive to have gamepass and to buy add-ons and that 10% drop in revenue likely vanishes over the long term.

Their last chance in gaming and even willing to kill that

Looks to me Microsoft wants to kill the Xbox brand but doing it slowly instead of just pulling the plug.
