Installing Programs Vs just copying folders from one drive to another

If I have the same installation of WindowsXP Pro Corp on my laptop and two desktops here, can I then install something to the desktop machine and just drag the folders over to my other machines?

Will my programs and games work if I do that?

A friend of mine says that works with some of his programs. I thought most all programs had to be installed to write things to the registery, etc., if said programs were to work.

Can anyone drag programs files from one computer to another and have them work without an install?

Well, it's pretty much what you said. If the app writes nothing to the registry then you should be fine (or if it doesn't create it's own entries into your path file incase of installing to a directory not normally in the path).

So, some small apps will work just fine being copied, but most of your real applications installed with Installshield or whatnot are going to not work.
