Interesting...PS3 design - fake?

Claimed to be from a leaked E3 brochure. Originated on the Gamespot forums, via EminaZ & Kurgan on the teamxbox forums (http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=333356).

The PDF looks like this:

ps3-pdf.jpg

It's the best "fake" sofar, I think. If it is fake. Hard to tell?

That's a nice render, I also like the choice for the reflection map. Looks like a train station or some sort of mall. Yes it's fake.

Out of curiosity, what is that UVD slot on the right?

Doesn't look bad... I just don't want it to look like or be as heavy as the VCR I bought (aka MY XBOX)

I like how it keep the shinny plastic look like the PSP.

Shinny Black = SEXY/ MUST BUY!

A more appropriate title would have been "Fake PS3 design - interesting?" :p

But, yeah, it's very nice and slick and very well made.

The PDF refers to PS3/PSP UMD "MediaMove". A quick google reveals nothing of "MediaMove".

I actually like the design a lot. Too bad if it is indeed fake (I'll have to rely on others' judgement here - I'm not an inobvious fake spotter!)

Has there EVER been a leaked video game console mock up that turned out to be the real thing? Or even remotely close to what the final design looked like? Holy shit, there is a new mock-up of supposed upcoming hardware released every other day.

One thing -

Just because it's a render, doesn't mean it's not real. I have no idea either way, but PSP was first presented through a render on some PDF shown on some meeting.

Has there EVER been a leaked video game console mock up that turned out to be the real thing?
Well, as I've said, PSP's almost final design was leaked

Fake- an ugly but well rendered fake. :)

It is way too early for Sony to even have the design finalized. Xbox360 is more likely to leak out first.

The original playstations logo on it is the telling point that its probably fake (that and that its on the internet)
The original PlayStation logo is right on the front of the PS2. It's the family logo.

Anyway, I like it, but feel it's got a bit too much height. Make it slimmer and I'm all about it.

I swear I thought it said UVD even thinking that it was probably some restructure of the UMD name like Universal Video Disc for a movie specific version. I kept thinking that the slot was waaaay too small for a UMD disc that are used on the PSP. Next time I'll lean in closer, hee hee.

Now I haven't seen any press brochures for any consoles lately but that mock up one is pretty damn bland.

Looks like a front projector. Not a bad design imo.

Not great, but not bad - sort of how I felt about the PS2 design.

YOUR RIGHT! I just realized that now, it does look like a projector!

None quite of this quality, though..

The biggest telltale signs I can see are the odd reflection and the "Design and specifications subject to change without notice" bit in the PDF...duh, obviously they wouldn't notify anyone who ever saw the PDF if the final design was to be difference..odd to say that.

I dunno, though, not an expert..

Best render so far IMO. I presume whoever did this would propose to put controller ports on the back or on the flat side...either that or are they really suggesting pure wireless?

That render looks good. The attention to detail is great.

I like how it has rubber feet for Vertical Positioning and it looks like it also has that main off/power swith in the back as well.

Looks like a silly ass camera. There's no actual power button or eject button just lights, it'd be interesting if they stuck those on the actual controller, which there are no ports for so they'd have to be wireless.

Neat fake

Edit: Nevermind, I see the power switch in the back.

how do people make these fake pics?
- A 3D Rendering program (Max, Maya)
- A sense of design and style
- A reasonable idea for a probable console design
- A bunch of fucking free time
- A gullible audience

Photoshop and a slick picture of a mall or a train station are also reccomended if you want to be really detailed.

Neat. There's no part of me that thinks it's real, but it's an interesting concept. That said, when are they going to start making consoles of fricken' standard home theater equipment width and dimensions? I'm tired of having to re-arrange my entire setup everytime I get a new oddly shaped and oh-so-cute console. I'm looking at you Mr. Gamecube, especially. Top-loading consoles are henceforth forbidden! FORBIDDEN!

Heh..I didn't even notice the rubber feet.

I'll say it again..fake or not, I like this design. One plausible explanation for the weird reflections etc. is Marconelly's suggestion that it's a concept render ala the PSP's first "design". If they had an early concept like that, it'd make sense them showing it off at E3 too, show the actual design later. Although I wonder if it's not a bit early for such material to have been made...I guess it is late March, but still.

The whole concept of a strong PS3-PSP link is also plausible. A umd drive in PS3 is a stronger link than I - and most people, probably - would have imagined, though. Not a very obvious thing to put into a design, if you're faking it.

edit - also, the view:reply ratio in this thread is pretty crazy 35:34 at the moment.

front panel is too messy - lights and logos all over the place

And its too focussed on the UMD drive - even if PS3 had one (which I doubt), it wouldn't be designed as the most noticable feature.

Nice work though

The one that came closer was the one presented by Edge for GBA SP...

I tried looking up "MediaMove" at the US Patent & Trademark Office, and I couldn't find anything. Don't know if all marks would show up in there, or if they could delay it showing up publically in that database till a certain date (i.e. after it's been announced).

Not sure why I'm entertaining this so seriously...but heh, it's a nice design :) Secretly, I guess I hope it's for real.

The fact that it's a render isn't why people are claiming it's fake, actually it has nothing to do with that at all. Considering that most mockups are either a render or a photo I wouldn't know how one came to that conclusion. The problem is that look of the front is rather poor, missing a few logos on the top, the previous mentions of it being concentrated on the UMD, and the PDF brochure is sloppily constructed.

I'm not a fan of the design but the author of the fake made some nice choices and constructed a plausible console design. The great texturing and lighting also make it look more like a professional shot rather than a fanmade render.

The view/reply ratio is screwy because of some server issue.

That's the main reason I think it's fake. It took me a while to figure out where the BR drive is located, UMD is in your face obvious.

Dolby logos don't say 5.1 they just have the Dolby Digital imprematur.

Looks nice tho. Except for the crinkly texture on the main black body.

Becauser consumers would think that the Xbox 360 is more powerful than the PlayStation 3? :lol

How would you eject disks? With the controller? And if so, how does it know which disc you want to eject? Different buttons, or different button combos?

Then again, IF it was real, and IF it was just an official concept render, it wouldn't necessarily have to burden itself with such realities ;)
