Interesting...PS3 design - fake?

I think if the guy wanted it centered he could have done it.

its more likely that 'a guy' would forget or let something slip, than a professional, paid Sony Industrial design guy actually designing the mockups.

How would you eject disks? With the controller?
I imagine that along with wireless (since there are no apparent controller ports and having them placed on the back of the unit is ridiculous) a possible explanation is that you would eject the game from the controller itself (with a confirmation window in case you mistakenly push it) like a DVD remote or through built in software.

Since both of those ideas are rather strange I'd imagine the designer possibly forgot to place an eject button or it's on another part of the system.

-The reflectionmap looks amaturish.
-Neo Art Deco design is on its way out.
-If PS3 is going to have UMD in PS3 it is not going to be with a seperate drive. SCE will make
some kind of hybrid drive that can play all formats.

and the magicgate logo isn't centered under the memory card slot...
Beat me to it, thoguh both MS Duos and Playstation 2 memory cards use Magic Gate. i can't tell on this monitor, but the words "Memory Card" don't look centered above the actual slot either.

The quality of the render (modelling, mapping, etc.) is better than the design. i don't like the slope on the front, the textured design on the top and sides contrasts the glossy front too much, and the metallic rim is a little too predictable, albeit not a Sony trend as far as i can remember. The front is more cluttered by lack of order than it is busy. The PSX had like nine logos on the front. And is MediaMove a registered trademark by Sony?

It's also a little close to the first.

It's fake.. they have used a freeware HDR light probe image to create the reflection in the machine, here's a rendered spheremap of the same image as a thumbnail:

.. or if you have a .hdr viewer available you can view the real light probe by downloading this file:

More light probes can be found at the following url:

Looks like a set of binoculars... wonder if the real PS3 will come with a way to play UMDs on it?

Oh wow nice freeware too, good find!

I thought the amateur reflection and the fact that it was amazingly distorted went without saying. The map itself is nice but the application is rather poor, can't beleive he used a random image off the net for the reflection.

reminds me of an old camera I once had...I like the design...though I would welcome another at the same time

it looks too thick and appears too heavy...the emphasis on the UMD is too great, though the slot feeding design kicks ass

It looks awesome... I would love that design... screw old PS2 controllers... forces people to buy the new controllers... MORE MONEY...

I hope it is real... come on E3 get here now...

Everything already mentioned aside - why put a UMD drive in PS3? Unless it was a burner..but that'd be expensive. You could also just use memory sticks for transferring data. I highly doubt they'd let you play PSP games on a PS3 either...(?)

I love how every time something like this happens, there are these damning major pieces of evidence that this is fake, and yet you still have people nitpicking on the tiniest things.

"Logo's not centered. FAKE"

Ooooo, EXCITING!!!! I think it looks awesome!!! I think it's real! Here's what some are claiming is the official logo for PS3:

:lol It's been a few years since I've seen that fake logo. I honeslty think Game companies just put out "leaks" (Fakes) to see fan reactions, just so they can get it right. They might not do it a majority of the time, but every once in a while I think they do.

And that original post with the PS3...that doesn't look too good. It's just seems too big and having one side flat and one curved doesn't look good either.

I like it, thats nice. I think its real, or atleast I want it to be real. The design has a PSP style to it that make it look like it could be legit. I wouldn't be dissapointed at all.

That's one of the cooler fake console designs I've ever seen. I bet the real deal will look ugly as hell at first, then end up looking better than the competition after all. I remember when PS2 was first revealed, everyone thought it looked like a piece of 80's stereo equipment (and I guess it still does).

I still maintain that it looks like a car amp.

So this is the close-up of the PS3-compatible devices... looks interesting...

The design is not half bad imho. They only need to make it thinner (shorter).

The UMD drive could be for watching UMD movies y'know, not playing games. It'd be nice to have say the UMD of Hellboy but not the DVD, and hey, I want to watch Hellboy but I don't want to spend $20 to get another version of this movie I already own, I'll just watch the UMD on my PS3. Or to be at a store, and you have a PS3 and a PSP, and you want to get a movie that's available on DVD and UMD, you'd pick the UMD because you can not only watch it at home, but on the go.

PS - I like the design quite a bit. I hope it turns out to be real, or atleast looks similar. I'd never buy one, but it looks nicer than the PS2.

Wow. If this is true, that means PS3 is compatible with televisions. Was this known before?

I kinda like it. It should be half the height and I would be sold. It shomehow resembles the PSP.
If this is fake, the author went to great length to make it look legitimate. Most fakes are just renders, but the guy made an actual brochure, including similar Sony products. It looks more like a proposal from the design department than a fake to me.

eh, it's obviously fake. there's no reason to add an UMD drive to add to the manufacturing costs. it's ridiculous.

UMD drive cost is minimal as are the costs of PS2 memory card slots, memory stick slot, wireless/WiFi chipset.

My thoughts are that mem stick slots will be for PS3 games and compatible with PSP saves/images/mp3s.

The major costs in 2006 in this device will be the CPU, GPU, RAM and Blu-Ray drive (which won't be anything but read only).

RAM might be 256 though - these extra add ons are more important to Sony's convergence aims for PS3 than another 256 RAM especially with an already powerful GPU/CPU combo.

Yeah that's true, but at the same time the guy who made this would probably pay attention to something like that after spending time to do the rest.
