Interesting Xbox Games for the X360...

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
This is for all of us (am I alone) out there getting X360s having never owned an original Xbox. Some of you guys know that I'm a bit of a collector freak when it comes to games. I honestly don't feel like I missed too much by skipping out on MS' initial splash into the gaming world. However, now that I WILL have an X360, I'd like to review the Xbox's library of (for the most part) original and exclusive games for consideration to purchase.

Let's lay down some ground rules for consideration, eh?

1.) Assume 100% backwards compatability, for now. I know that'll likely never be true, but there's no point trying to guess what will be patched to work on the X360 and what won't.

2.) Let's leave off MULTIPLATFORM games entirely. I have a GameCube. I have a PS2. I have a kick ass PC capable of running everything current, and I have significant libraries for all three systems. So, unless there were some major tweaks, fixes, or bonus content, let's assume that I either have the game for one of the other three platforms I've listed, or I dropped the game from consideration entirely.

3.) Halo. Halo 2. Ninja Gaiden (Hurricane Pack, Black, or otherwise). Don't like. Don't care. Won't buy. :D

So. What should I get, then?

JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta and the Chronicles or Riddick. All AAA games, and my favorites on the console.

Sadly, none of them actually work.

I might get Riddick for the PC then. Better graphics (I imagine), and certainly better FPS controls, right? And I don't have to worry about BC.

I have both KOTOR games for the PC already, and I hated the first, so I likely wouldn't bother with the second. (Not an exclusive game, ya know!) ;)

What is Phantom Dust? Normally, I don't completely blank on games, but this one doesn't ring a bell!

Just out of curiosity, did the PC or PS2 versions of Riddick ever come out?

The PS2 version was never actually planned. Vin Diesel wanted it to, but thats about as high up the ladder as that decision ever got. The PC version is really good too, but I dont know what your PC situation is.

19" Flatpanel Dell monitor
Pentium IV - 3.8 GHz
1gb RAM (gonna upgrade to 2 for Oblivion, I think)
ATI X850 XT RADEON
5.1 Surround Speakers

My PC can handle just about any "Xbox era" games at max settings, I think.

Phantom Dust is quite simply the most fantastic and beautiful third person futuristic combat game ever created.

Seriously though, it's really friggin' good, and only 20 bucks. I highly recommend it. Custom soundtracks too.

It's not compatible with the 360 though, right?

On the current BC list:

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Jade Empire
Stubbs the Zombie: Rebel Without a Pulse
Deathrow

Others:

Jet Set Radio Future
Gunvalkyrie
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the original XBOX only release, not Chaos Bleeds)
Breakdown
Phantom Dust
Rallisport Challenge 2

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ( first one )
Deathrow
Unreal Championship 2
Jet Set Radio Future
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Jade Empire

Otogi. It's a stylish action game inspired by Japanese mythology. You didn't like Ninja Gaiden, so I don't know if you'd be interested in this or not.

He said assuming BC.

Here are the top 10 most interesting Xbox titles.

1) Phantom Dust
2) Jet Set Radio Future
3) Panzer Dragoon Orta
4) Steel Batallion
5) GunValkyrie
6) Deathrow
7) Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
8) Voodoo Vince
9) Otogi/Otogi 2
10) Thief: Deadly Shadows

If you manage to get all 10 of those in the same room, I promise you'll never look at the Xbox the same way again.

How about Stubbs The Zombie? Pretty interesting play mechanics, very funny at times, and just all-around fun.

Half the games people are listing won't work. At least look at the backwards compatibility list, people.

No, and this thread isn't about trolling Geist. I don't like Halo. I won't buy Halo. I've played the 1st one extensively on both the Xbox and the PC, and even fiddled with the second a bit. It ain't my thing.

OK, then I'll do something more useful and go into Phantom Dust a bit...

It's been a while since I played it, so hopefully people can correct/fill in for me. You get FPS-style levels, but no weapons. You can only attack by picking up and equipping magic. The catch is, it doesn't carry over between battles - you have to start fresh every time. It's kind of like an alternate-universe PSO. The storyline is actually pretty interesting, too, and online play is fantastic.

Don't forget that the music is awesome too. There's a few tunes that use Beethoven and Chopin pieces.

The save-room music is Chopin's Nocturne in B-flat minor, Op. 9 No. 1. The recording is a bit on the wispy side, definitely geared more towards a "relaxing" quality. This comes at the expense of the drama of the piece when it's played as written, but it serves its purpose beautifully.

Oh yeah, and the game's MSRP is $20, just to make the deal even sweeter.

>>>Thanks for reminding me. I've always been curious about both Otogis. Sega games, no?<<<

From Software, actually. Published by Sega.

From Soft?

Errr. They did the Armored Core and Lost Kingdom games, which I didn't like.

But they also did King's Field... which I DID like.

I may check them out, if they ever become BC!

If you get it, definately get the PC version. Low MSRP, more content (added sections), better graphics, and a pretty neat commentary mode after you beat the game.
