Internet problems - half the internet dead

Ok, I'm not really sure what the heck is going on, maybe a hidden virus or spyware, who knows. I called Cox and they say it's not a problem on their end and my internet connection is just fine according to the tests they ran.

So far I've tried:
Adaware
Spybot Search and Destroy
I keep Spyware Blaster installed on my PC and protection enabled all the time.
Used AVG Free edition and the online virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/, but both showed no problems.

Can't access:
http://www.newegg.com
http://www.playstation.com or http://www.sony.com
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com or http://www.blizzard.com
http://www.nintendo.com
http://www.nelottery.com
http://www.abit-usa.com
http://www.nvidia.com
... And a ton more.

You get the picture. I can do searches on google and there will always be a few websites on the first page that I can't access. When I do a search on "Playstation" I can't access over half of the websites on the first page.

They had me ping sites like Yahoo when I called Cox, which works fine, 4 packets sent and 4 packets received. But when I go to ping one of the sites above, it says "Destination host unreachable." Not really sure what to make of that or how to go about fixing it. =|

It was working perfect when I installed Windows XP about a month ago I use an Abit nforce2 NF7-S motherboard, using the on board LAN port. I have the latest drivers installed, but I can't even go and check or download the drivers again to reinstall them because I can't access Abit's website or Nvidia's website. Not sure where else to get drivers for my motherboard other than those two places.

I doubt anyone here knows a solution, but it can't hurt. Even if someone can just post a good PC tech support forum or website that would be great.

It could be any number of things. The first thing I'd consider is a localized routing issue with Cox. It's by no means conclusive, but run a trace route and see where things stop. You can do this by opening up a DOS prompt and typing:

tracert www.google.com (or whichever site you want.)

Perhaps a simple power cycle of your modem and router? Maybe reboot your computer?

You can also go to the command prompt and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

That's a bit of a stretch, but you may as well try everything, right?

Should mention that I use Firefox normally, but it's the same no matter what browser I use. Same with my router... it doesnt matter if it's connected or not, the result is the same.

Ah, just noticed I have two things listed under Network Connections in Windows XP... one is Local Area Connection and the other is 1394 Connection 4. Both say connected, but only one is through the Nforce Networking Controller. The other is through some 1394 Net Adapter... which doesn't even exsist. I have no other network device on my PC. =| I tried removing it but it always reappears after I reboot.

Give it some time, that's probably all you can do (as far as I know).

Hopefully. It's been about four days already though so I'm not holding my breath. :(

LOL! The 1394 connection is your damn firewire port :lol Its supposed to be there.

Never said I knew what all this stuff means, that's why I was asking for help.

Don't worry, I just found it funny 'cause I did the same thing.

Go to the command prompt and type
tracert www.nintendo.com and tell me whats the last thing on the list.

Also have you made any changes to the computer since the last time it worked fine?

ping 205.166.76.26 or type it in the address bar, thats nintendo.com website. If you can't then its a DNS issue.

The only thing that has changed the past few days was minor stuff... updated Foxytunes extension for Firefox, installed Motherboard monitor 5 and AVG Free edition.

Tracert on www.nintendo.com says:

"1 Destination host unreachable.

Trace complete."

Trying to ping the IP does the same thing, just Destination host unreachable 4 times in a row, then Packets: Sent=4 Received=0 Lost=4 (100%)

Hmm... I have no idea what this means, but when I hook my router up and then plug my sister's laptop in, I can access all the sites I'm unable to access on my main PC.

Hmm, I don't know whats going on. Since you can't ping the IP address then its not a DNS issue. It seems to be on your side because you got nothing with the trace route. Did you try rebooting your computer and you cable modem? Your router if you have one. I don't know what else could it be.

Edit: Disable the windows firewall if you have it running, uninstall AVG, motherboard monitor. Do one at a time. Trial and error.

So, do you have Protowall or Peerguardian blocking HTTP? Did you fuck with your Hosts file? Is SpywareBlaster blocking different things? This happens to me occassionally, and it's always one of these things. Also, check your DNS settings.

:lol

Haha... thanks man, I completely forgot about Peerguardian since I usually have XP just hide the icon when it's in the taskbar. I don't ever remember enabling it to block HTTP, but either I or a family member must have at some point in the past few days. -_-;

Oh well, at least it wasn't something huge.

Yeah as soon as I read that about PG, I thought that might be the problem. I can't access espn with HTTP blocked, but a lot of other sites I can.

GO SURF LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SURFED BEFORE :)
