iOS 11 |OT| iPad becomes useful

Maybe this is answered already but with the multitasking and dropping an App from the dock to "pop up" how do I close this instantly after? Is there no easy way?

I drag messages quickly to write an message but then I can't close it right away? I have to then drag from the top of the messages app to put it to split view, then drag it to the right?

IS this correct or is there a faster way that I do not know about?

Thanks,

You can just shove "pop over" apps off of the right edge of the screen.

One thing I do not like is all these plugins or whatever they’re called beneath the text entry box in the messaging app. Prefer when they were hidden.

I get the same animation issue when opening Safari, been using 11 for a few days, hasn’t really improved much. Like you said, sometimes it’s silky smooth, other times it isn’t. Depends on the app, but it happens frequently when I’m opening Safari. I always have 5 tabs or so open as well. On a 9.7 Pro. Actually downgraded to 10 and none of that crap is present.

Edit: Another annoying issue was Hey Siri not functioning with my Smart Keyboard cover on and the iPad locked.

Ah, also my Smart Keyboard has refused to function in Safari from time to time, I have o switch out and back again. Weird. I’m sure these little things will get patched out.

Overall I like ios11, the dock is good once you’ve reprogrammed your brain and rearranged your apps to multitask that way, lol.

You can slide the slide over app off the screen to the right. It’s not technically closing the app but neither is putting it into split and dragging another app into full screen mode.

The only way to truly close an app is to go into multitask view and swipe up, but Apple recommends against doing that unless an app is malfunctioning.

Yea, the 'resume' animation is definitely jittery for me.

How? I tried flicking and it doesn't move? I can just move it to the left of the screen or right. Or from the top put it in slide view.

Edit - oh I got it. Takes a little getting use to.

Thanks,

Not a troll post, a legitimate question - but what do you all use your iPads for?

Reading comics (using Chunky). Browsing Gaf. Looking up actors on IMDB when we're watching TV or a film ("They look familiar... Was she in Nikita?"). Checking Twitter. Reading papers (WaPo Classic, NYMag, New Yorker). Sometimes having recipes on screen when cooking something new or unusual. Occasionally listening to music and watching stuff on YouTube. Light browsing of random websites.

Oh, flicking through family and holiday snaps.

It gets a lot of use, considering my gaming laptop is only a few feet away from where my iPad sits on the coffee table.

Updated my iPad Air 2 and after some expected initial stuttering (and one ugly freezing) things seem smooth.

I'm enamored with the new multitasking and screenshot features (took me a bit to learn how to play around with the former and I had to read the explanations on Apple's site, but it's all good now. For the screenshots I watched the video posted earlier itt).

Still unsure if I should update my 6S or if I'd rather wait for 11.1, but I'm tempted.

Still no update showing for my watch. Is it because my iPhone is on the GM instead of the public release?

Also Siri cannot translate from British English yet...erm, what. Shit isn’t that different!

Not true. The phone just needs to be locked while doing the backup to iCloud.

You’re right. Looking at Settings and seeing “Health” there... and now I feel like a fool haha 😅

Thought I read somewhere that due to HIPAA compliance they couldn’t back that data up like the other iCloud services. But having the phone locked for it makes sense.

Just curious. I have always toyed with the idea of getting one, but I would want to use it for light development but I don’t think iOS supports that yet.

I updated my Air 2 to the GM and pulled out of the Beta a few days ago, yet it's not seeing an update (unlike my SE, which was still on 10.3.3). I'm assuming it's because the GM and the public release are exactly the same?

so far I am liking what I am seeing in iOS11, but my biggest disappointment so far is the AR apps.

I downloaded two AR enabled apps tonight:

TapMeasure
- This is supposed to be a standard tape measure as well as level and room planner app, and once I got past the tutorial video and was able to use the app I was having a hard time just getting the tape measure to work right. I dropped a point at the edge of my nightstand and then tried to measure one side of it, but when I moved my iPhone the pin I had dropped was moving too and not staying where I dropped it, which threw off my measurements... not sure if its the app or if I am doing something wrong, so I'll need to play with it some more, but as of right now, its not very useful.

Ikea Place - This app, as it is right now is poop! I tried to drop some sort of end table into my room and it took up like 1/4th of my room, and I had no idea how to manipulate it to make it smaller. I thought maybe pinching my fingers together would decrease the size, but nope, nothing happened... hopefully some future updates will make this app useable.

Are there any other AR apps out there that actually work? or at least somewhat work?

Also, I like the new control center and the fact that you can 3D to clear all notifications.

Writing (iPad Pro keyboard cover is the best keyboard I’ve ever used), illustration with pencil and media consumption. The lack of file system , the inexcusable lack of external storage and lack of proper photoshop are deal killers for me in terms of replacing a real pc but it’s super handy for light use.

So far the new File app is a bad joke. Maybe it will improve with more support. But again without sd cards or plug and play hard drives they have no business using the moniker “pro.”

I still love mine though. Abusive relationship.

Ios11 CarPlay seems to have borked iHeartRadio and Amazon music. The apps “work” but never load music or channels.
