iOS Gaming March 2017 | Switch to iOS

Still stuck at work but judging from some videos of the iOS version of Oxenfree that are now popping up, seems to me identical to the PC version, fog and all?

This game seems to be very well polished and it's stylish to look at for one. It might look simple but it quickly becomes convoluted and you will need to think ahead in how you plan your route to pick up each passenger and get them to their destination. I'm only at level 9 in the first galaxy but I'm already scratching my head. I suck at puzzles.

Given the dev's history in Sokoban titles, I'm not surprised by the price and I know that the game is top tier.

It's also kind of sad in a way that so many fairly well known ports are coming this week so $4.99 looks steep when you've got a port of Oxenfree that's $20 on other platforms selling for $3.99. The App Store economy is not easy to navigate.

That said I'm sure Cosmic Express is great but it's not really my thing and have puzzle overload right now.

The whole indie promotion is awesome but wonder how it's going to work out for individual devs having to compete for the limelight and dollars with so much coming out in a short period.

----
And for gamers who play console as well, it's even more challenging with Zelda, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier and Mass Effect Andromeda in just a few week period.

Is it as stressful as Mini Metro or is what MM should have been: fun?

Might not be as good as Rolando but I'm enjoying it. It's really adorable and like the gameplay so far.

Too many games this week, Oxenfree, Mushroom-11 and Card Thief + plus maybe a surprise game is overwhelming in one week

This is not stressful at all. It's actually the opposite of Mini Metro. It is super relaxing and you can take all the time in the world to plan your route. You have to drag your finger through the tiles and if you regret something you just drag you finger back to erase the trail. Very relaxing really.

I should mention that Pavilion was $11.99 at release on Shield TV and The Witness was $19.99 so not all ports will be cheap. Will be interesting to see if they lower them on iOS.

Many of the recent games are premium with higher than usual (still super cheap) price tiers.
I like this.
The bar has been raised in quality too.

This week is really insane tough.

I'll throw all my money at them during this indie campaign. Damn I'm really loving these daily releases. Wish it could be done like this every week, so it wouldn't be one big release dump every Thursday.

The surefire buys for me for the rest of March are Pavilion, Card Thief, Death Road to Canada and Sunless Sea.

Are any of you keeping track of the games you've bought/downloaded in an Excel document for examples? I'm thinking of doing it so I have an easy overview of which games have been delisted.

I like it as well. Will always support premium. But so many coming out at once is a lot to take in and wonder if some games -- like Cosmic Express for instance -- will do as well if they had released in a less busy week.

If every week was like this week:

1) My wife would divorce and I would never see her and my son again.
2) I would be poor.
3) I would die from sleep deprivation.

I thought this as well.
And I didn't even know all this goodness was planned.

I hope this turns out well for the devs participating and I hope Apple does a permanent page with recent releases that is up at least for a month, to compensate the crowding.

EDIT: all the indie devs I follow are pretty hyped for this anyway.

Woah. Just saw that Pavilion will only be $3.99 on iOS. A bit of a slap in the face to Shield owners but guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Same thing happened with Riptide Renegade GP. Guess temporary exclusivity is not cheap.

Finally added Oxenfree to this insane week haul.

I'm almost happy we won't get Stasis and Darkest Dungeon this week as well :p

EDIT: also, one by one, I'm depleting my Steam wishlist :)

I do hope the indie devs find enough success from this promotion. From what I've seen only Kingdom has been able to break through the top 50 paid during this whole period.

Woah.

This insane week was the hint of something bigger apparently.
Apple is stepping up.

Mobile and PC have always been closely linked. Open platforms where a new dev can make their debut, an avenue for genres and experimental games that wouldn't really appear on consoles, a haven for indie developers.

No surprise that PC indie games are always making their way to mobile

And more than a few devs have made their start on mobile before expanding to PC and consoles. It's as much a gateway into game dev as the game jams and freeware games on PC

With a top tier price point too (well deserved, content is staggering).

Let's be honest.
If not a year ago, but just a month ago, someone told us we would get this level of insane week, we wouldn't believe him.

I know I wouldn't.

I hereby declare this week THE FIRST GLORIOUS WEEK.

Played a bit Stranger Thi.....ahem....OXENFREE.

Let me say this once again.
What a glorious week.
What a glorious start for a game.

You guys weren't wrong about being 'stressful'...so many dialogue options in so little time, I'm freaking out!!!!

Feels great tough on touch, playing in the dark with headphones is quite an experience.
Looks awesome on iPad too.
And controls awesome too.

GLORIOUS.

Why did I get a Switch... (ok, I'm loving Zelda and Shovel Knight). I do wonder how sustainable this is. Especially at these bargain bin prices. Already as much as I enjoyed A Good Snowman, I had to put Cosmic Express on my wishlist. I need to see what else shakes out before buying any more (I grabbed Ticket to Earth earlier, and still want to grab Beglitched...)

Thankfully I already played the excellent Oxenfree
complete with a More_Badass mirror sighting
and The Witness. Which if that launches at even $10 is nuts.

Glad you're enjoying it. I honestly feel it's probably the best of the recent string of "walking simulators" in gaming.

Also shocked at the $3.99 price tag on it. Very much a bargain.

Is 20$ on PS4, Steam,... a bargain is not even close... a steal

Until Dawn in 2D and hopefully more interesting as well

Wouldn't really call it a walking sim. It's in the same genre as Walking Dead and Life Is Strange. Actually I'd say Oxenfree is the most innovative entry in the genre since the first Walking Dead

Well, I think many walking sims have branching dialog and events. A lot of major gaming sites referred to Oxenfree as part of the walking sim trend that really exploded over the past two years.

That's not meant as a negative at all.

Destructoid's raving 9/10 review for instance:

"Oxenfree is a walking simulator that is confident enough in its characters and dialogue to bet that you won't mind just hanging around with them....It's a walking simulator you should play."

I'm literally glued to my iPad screen with headphones.
It doesn't even feel like a video game.
I'm watching a TV serie, I'm watching a movie.
No.
I'm INTO the movie.

It's GLORIOUS.

I wouldn't even compare it to LiS. I mean Oxenfree is good 2-3h 2D adventure.

LiS is something much more. But for that price Oxenfree is totally worth it.

Still the same genre though. Dialogue-driven narrative adventure. The walk-and-talk design allows it to have a pacing and conversation style that no other game in the genre can do.

Adventures of Pip is down to its lowest price ever: $1.99 (the normal price is $14.99). Great platformer.

Speaking of platformers, I'm still really liking The Big Journey. It's not a classic or groundbreaking. Just a cute, lighthearted, enjoyable game that's a nice break from all the more involved games.

Meanwhile Ticket to Earth is starting to get the attention it deserves from mainstream media.

Nice!

Surprised to read this in the article:

"Currently on sale on iTunes for $3.99, the initial purchase covers the dozens of missions in the first chapter of the game as well as subsequent chapters."

Didn't know think it had been decided that the price would include subsequent chapters. Honestly wouldn't have minded paying for them.

Hi guys, little birds say that Apple plans to give the axe to 32-bit apps along with the slowly approaching iOS 11. Many great older games probably won't be updated, so I think it's high time for me to compile an essential list of games that might be leaving the App Store and considering the time/money needed to update them – many will probably be lost forever, or at least for a long time.

Here are all 32-bit apps currently on my phone:

From this list I think FFT (this will definitely get ported, but considering Square's reflexes it might take time), Knightmare Tower, Deep Dungeons of Doom and 868-Hack deserve special attention.

(If you're on 10.3 you can check in Settings->General->Apps->App Compatibility)

If you have any golden oldies, what else would you recommend getting?
Also, is there any decent replacement for keeping track of discounts? I really like AppShopper, because it's nice, clean, and simple.

868-Hack and Dark Echo will likely (very definitely) get updated for iOS 11; both of those devs are quite active on the platform and those are some of their most popular games

So what's the indie game coming tonight/tomorrow?

And Oxenfree was totally unexpected right? We were expecting Cosmic Express to be the today's indie game but it was really Oxenfree?

Edit: oh right, Pavilion

Same here.
Yeah, I was expecting and prepared for a full game unlock/purchase like Telltale's games

$3.99 being the 40% off sale price means the full price will be $9.99
