Ip Man 2 Trailer (Featuring Sammo Hung!)

I'm remaining slightly apprehensive. Whilst I enjoyed the shit out of Ip Man, recent sequels-to-movies tend to suck absolute balls in China/Hong Kong cinema.

Hopefully they'll buck the recent trend and pump out a movie that is just as good as the original.

Exactly. They were all like "Wait, did this muthafukka really just hit me 20 times in 3 seconds!?" And by the time that thought was processed it was already too late and those turkeys were done knocked the fuck out!

I have been trying to track down this movie. Is it called Dragons Forever in america? I seem to remember seeing it a long long time ago.

Benny Urquidez was in Dragons Forever as well, but this screenshot is from Wheels on Meals. Both links have embedded trailers so check them out if you are unsure which one you are after.

damn i still need to see that movie, cant find it anywhere local, gotta order it on ebay. is it a good blind buy?

Yes. Good drama by Chinese standards (As usual they forcefully fit scenes to tackle every possible human emotion into the movie, for better or worse) and the fights are great. The entire ending fight sequence alone is super good and Billy Chow is prob about as tough/menacing as he possibly can be too.

If you are a fan of the genre it's definitely worth a watch, it has the usual Sammo quirks. Oh, and also co-starring Billy Chow (AKA General Fujita from Fist of Legend :D). Actually he did quite a few movies with Sammo back in the day, he was in Eastern Condors and Paper Marriage too now that I think of it...

Yup, he's a random henchmen in a lot of Sammo's flicks as well (Well, he's usually slightly stronger than average hecnmen). He's also in Dragon's Forever as that enemy Biao finishes off right before being 1-hit defeated by Benny Urquidez. Takes a pretty bad fall onto an uneven part of the floor. Ouch.

BTW, Billy Chow didn't take the fall. While Chow is a incredible fighter, he wasn't quite agile enough to do those dangerous stunts.

Just re-watched that scene on Youtube... haven't seen the movie in a long time, don't think I recognized him back when I first saw it (attention was probably all on scary Benny and Yuen Wah in his usual magnificent bastard persona back then). I do remember that very brutal looking bodyfold landing that he takes though... :lol

Yeah, as Szu pointed out, that was probably taken care of by a double. Jackie's tornade kick finisher on Benny in this one was doubled too, by Chin Kar Lok I think. I remember being disappointed when I found out about it back in the day.

Looks pretty awesome. But I have to agree with the "big brutish british boxer getting beaten by superior kung fu"-stereotype being waaaay old. It's just not fun anymore, never really was. 90% of the time that fight is the one in the movie with the worst choreography. Pretty much Urquidez was the only one who was made interesting.

The movie came out a couple of days ago in Honk Kong and Singapore. Has anyone here watched it yet?

It's a solid effort, personally don't feel that's it's as good as the first one and certainly doesn't attempt to go beyond it. The Donnie Yen/ Sammuel Hung fight and their storyline would be the highlight, in parts it's almost like Rocky 4 in their attempt to create a new hero figure for China along the lines of wong fei hung. It is starting to irk me how this slate of martial art films that are co-productions between HK/China cater so obviously towards a unncessary nationalistic (and maybe even xenophobic)fervour though.

Cool, thanks for the impressions. If I'm just expecting awesome fighting first, good story second, will that be enough? With that line of thought the first movie actually surprised me. I don't really mind the nationalistic angle either, it was pretty blatant in the first Ip Man anyway...and hell I love Rocky IV! :P

Too bad I guess that it doesn't really take things one step further like you said, but more of the same ain't too bad.

Would be nice if the white guy in these movies wasn't the stereotypical brute for once.

Have you seen Gorgeous? It has a fight between Jackie Chan and Bradley Allan who is about a head shorter than Jackie.

I caved and watched the Mando version. I now know how a Quebecor feels about English people ruining their culture, because god damn... it's like no one gives a shit about Cantonese anymore. :lol

I just find it funny that they managed to make yet another movie about colonialism... this time, it's white people who must be fought. I said it sounded like Fearless 2 and I was kind of right.
I'm surprised they don't just make a third movie where he fights some Taiwanese martial artist or something.

Still, neat film for the most part. I just don't watch much HK movies nowadays since they're all shitty cop dramas now, so it was a nice diversion.

As for pandering to the Chinese audience... yeah, they really don't have much choice. That's where all the money is - even with the rampant piracy in Asia. And the thing about the Japanese and generic white people, all Chinese people across the Asian diaspora can get behind hating them. :lol

What I find funny is that this year there will be a huge glut of Ip Man films. There's yet another one coming out in June and then Wong Kar Wai's film which is supposedly coming out later this year. Ip Man really is the new Wong Fei Hung.

Where is the cantonese version? Why do I have to watch a dubbed mandarin version?

The Cantonese version is in HK. :lol

Without saying anything ban worthy, I don't expect to see a Canto version for a while unfortunately... Cantonese really is a dying language. :p

Yeah, looks like it's only used in Hong Kong, Vancouver, and parts of LA
