Apple Inc.'s retail stores are running out of iPhones, a sign the company may soon introduce a new version of the Web-surfing handset, Piper Jaffray & Co. said.

At least 20 of Apple's 180 stores in the U.S. are out of iPhones, and Apple is telling online shoppers it may take as long as seven days to fill their orders, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster of Minneapolis said Tuesday in a report.

"We are working to replenish iPhone supplies as quickly as we can," Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said. "Our stores continue to receive shipments almost every day."




The short supply may mean Apple is preparing a new iPhone that operates on so-called third-generation wireless networks, Munster said. Those 3G networks allow faster Internet downloads than are available on the two models Apple now sells. The new version may sell for $400 and resemble the current model, he said.

Shares of Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., rose $6.03, or 4.2 percent, to $149.53 in Nasdaq trading. The price of Apple shares, which Munster advises investors to buy, has declined 24.5 percent this year.

The company may offer as many as three models of the iPhone by January to appeal to a range of customers, just as it has by selling different versions of the iPod media player, Munster said.

AT&T Inc. Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said in November that Apple will release a 3G iPhone this year. San Antonio-based AT&T, the largest U.S. phone company, is Apple's exclusive provider of wireless service in the U.S.

if true ill be ebaying my gen 1 and getting the new model. edge sucks. hopefully 3g is a lot faster. they need to fix the battery light, add flash/better camera, and have mms support (doubt any will happen) and ill be a happy camper.

Yeah but mms is not a hardware issue, and for the life of me can not figure out why they still have not added it.

Add this http://ipodtouch.net/repo.xml to your sources list in installer for a version that works with 1.1.4.
If you want to try the alpha of Customize 2 I can send you an invite if you are interested.
 
Hey guys, what is the best and preferably free program for video conversion?
When i try to convert using itunes, it messes up the audio, any tips perhaps? File type is 3gp.

Hmm... well first of all 3G would be much faster, so no worries there, and all rumors indicate that that is the biggest upgrade coming in the next version. A better camera wouldn't be out of the realm either, but not sure about a flash. Not many cell phone cameras have flashes. (Yes, I know that some do), and mms could easily be added in software, and should have been in by now.

Not sure what you mean by "fix the battery light". Can you explain?
 
Maybe he meant battery 'life' which, IMO is great for all that this thing does. Turn the brightness down and use airplane mode when you don't get a signal/need one. Those two things alone add an additional day of usage without charge.

Video recording really should be included in the next version. It's one silly-ass omission IMO.

Battery life is a possibility, but I have no complaints here. Battery life is great for me. If they go 3G, you'll hate the battery life even more.
 
Any rumors another price drop? I cracked my 4Gig(still working) and I've been just waiting on the 8GB to drop instead of paying $275 for Apple to fix it.

I haven't heard a peep on a price drop, and frankly, I wouldn't hold my breath.

i know its not a hardware issue, but knowing apple, it'd be a new "feature only available in iPhone 2.0!!!!!" :O

Unfortunately, there is nothing new in that statement. Both he and Jobs have already said a 3G iPhone is coming. The question is when. And "a couple of months" still puts it i the rumored June timeline.

Although, to add fuel to the fire, the other rumors floating around today is that stock is running low on the iPhone in Apple Stores, which is often an indication that a new model is on the way. Apple doesn't have any events scheduled yet though. At least not before WWDC.

Let's just leave it at that once you go from EDGE to 3G, going BACK is a really hard argument to make.

Your particular area needs to be covered, though. Check AT&T's map.
 
It'll be good to have the option of 3G, but not sure I care to pay more than $20/mo for data right now. Would also depend on whether their 3G coverage is any better than their EDGE coverage. When I get a good signal from EDGE I'm fine with the throughput I get. It's just when the signal is intermittent that it gets frustrating.
 
Am I dumb or is there a way to grab new podcasts with wifi iTunes on my iPhone?

I know I can just stream them but I figured they would have implemented this.
 
It's going to have to have more than just 3G for me to care at this point.

You all think the form factor will evolve? More angular or something?
 
I think it's possible that the form factor will evolve some. Maybe get a little thinner. Closer to the Touch perhaps. Not sure about more angular.

On a different note, my iPhone developed a problem this morning. Grabbed it off the charger as I was heading out, and couldn't get the touch functions to work at at all in the upper half of the screen. Tried a hardware reset, and a software restore, and none of it helped. Made a quick appointment at the Apple Store and ran over on lunch. They swapped me out with a new one in 5 minutes and I was on my way. Did a "Back-up Restore" from my laptop once I got back to work, and the new phone was rockin' again in no time without ever missing a beat. The back-up is very nice.
 
eXxy or someone else in this thread had the same problem. I still don't even understand how the touch screen works being made out of glass and all... Hope that doesn't happen to mine. *crosses fingers*
 
FYI...

Playboy has a pretty sweet new iPhone site that just went live. There is no nudity at all...but it is probably one of the most impressive iPhone optimized sites out there right now. It has a grip of sweet videos, event galleries, audio clips from the Sirius Radio show etc. to check out.

You can check it out just by plugging in www.playboy.com into your iphone. I can't wait to see what kinds of cool sites we'll see once flash is possible on the iPhone!

Why has no third party hacked a simple copy and past fucntion into the iPhone? My goodness there is everything else! I am running 1.02 hacked the baseband modem/ radio way.

This is exactly why I'm perfectly happy not to have flash on the phone. Youtube and Dailymotion work perfectly as is.

Why does Apple need to bother with it when the big sites will just redesign their sites to work on the iPhone without Flash?

Make it yourself ?

Just put it into an album in iPhoto and have that album sync to your phone in iTunes. In Windows use whatever editing app iTunes supports (Photoshop Elements?)

Just got a brand new iPhone yesterday, and can't transfer my sim contacts over.

Went into Installer to try to install BSD Subsystem 2.0 (which would then allow me to use one of the free Sim programs?) but I get an error every time saying "Package download failed!"

Can anyone help? Really need to transfer my sim contacts from my T-Mobile sim to my new iPhone (using ZiPhone 2.6b). Thanks.

Try iLiberty instead of ziphone. iLiberty gives you the option of installing BSD subsystems during the jailbreak process.

sometimes i get that error message when im on edge instead of a wifi connection. go into settings and make sure it didnt disable wifi. also clear the queue in installer for any pending downloads then try again, if that doesnt work, restart your phone.

and oh my god do i miss visual voicemail! having to go through these stupid menus is painful man!
 
Is it bad that I'm using ZiPhone? I mean everything works great so far (Installer now works correctly) and was free and quick.

I've read some stuff that it will eventually fuck up my phone...? Or is that just ridiculous?

ive had my phone unlocked an jailbroken for a while, even tho i just recnently switched from att and i havent had any problems. the only problem i have was like i said earlier, tha lack of visual voicemail.....i forgot how cool it was :(
 
K so I think I lost all my contacts....

If I want to import contacts to my iPhone, what kind of file is accepted? I don't use Microsoft Outlook really...at this point I'll just save them as a file and import, just need help getting started
 
That new wallpaper app is wonderful. Basically shows other iPhone users' wallpaper every 10 seconds. Tap the screen and you can save it to your phone. I hate it when I miss a cool one. Is there a way to go back to one that was already displayed?


Also, I was contemplating getting an ATT wireless laptop card. But then I found out that you can tether the (hacked) iPhone to your laptop for an internet connection. Haven't tried it just yet though...
