This is a "to each his own" scenario, but other than NPR, FM is useless. I wouldn't want my iPhone sullied with it.

Pandora + AOL Radio are a thousand times better than an FM receiver anyway.

Yea I love Pandora and AOL radio too, so much more music u can get with those 2

protip: you can cancel the backup process without cancelling the entire sync. In the iTunes status window, when it says "backing up", hit the X on the right side of the progress bar within the window. It will stop the backup but continue to sync your music and other info.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it leaves you with a corrupted backup. So if your phone ever dies and you keep doing that you won't have a good backup to restore from.

Well, obviously you're not going to have a good backup if you cancel it :)

but I find it better to skip those 30 minutes every day and just let it do a full backup once a week.

I consider it a small risk since the only data I would lose in a random screw-up is game progress data and notes on the iphone. All my contacts and calendar info is on the computer already.

Ok, I'm going to the Apple Store soon as it opens to get an iPhone. I am currently under my family's plan, and due to the times, I'm getting a whole new contract. Does the primary holder HAVE to be present (my Father) to port over my existing AT&T # (Cingular originally), or can I open up a new contract and then port over my number at a AT&T store later? Also since I work at a hospital, am I able to get additional discounts? Can't get straight answers anywhere. I just want to get in and get out with no hassles as I have errands to run for CTcon and work a few hours after the store opens. @_@

Hey, I was in the same place today when I bought my iPhone 3g. You do not need your father present at the time you buy your iPhone to open up a new contract, but you do need him to call up ATT Customer Care (611 from his cell) and give verbal authorization for you to take your number to a new ATT account. After that, you can get your old number added to your iPhone account and the new number taken off at an ATT store. This is the ordeal I had to go through today (about 2.5 hours).

It would probably be best to have your dad do that before you go to the Apple store or ATT store, but I didn't know I needed to do that before hand.

Also, I bought a white 16 Gig phone today (I let my gf take the last black 16 gig). Any must have apps I need to download (besides Pandora)? Also, can I delete icons from the home page (like the weather and clock ones?

get these:

google app
stanza (e-reader with online library)
box office
exposure (if you're into flickr)
remote

Is it possible to unlock/Activate a 2G 8GB iPhone that does not contain a sim card? ..If so, please tell me how ;_;

I actually did this the day before (I'm with T-mobile, unlock and activation went smoothly) then today, I kinda screwed up andddd yeah.. WAY back to square one. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.

If all else fails, I'll have to search for the original sim that was inside. Located somewhere at a relatives home.

rolled up today pre-baseball game in cincy and got a 16gb black one to replace my 2 weeks post launch 8gb. restoring from backup now.

i like it. still don't like the itunes, and before i opened it to backup my old phone, i hadnt really opened it in months. ill fill this new guy up with some music, and then the itunes can go back down the hole it crawled out of for a couple more months.

The most you can do with the base icons is move them to another page (by pressing and holding any of the icons until they start wiggling and dragging the ones you want moved offscreen), which I think serves the purpose rather nicely.

Question...

So if Apple is going to accuse me of lying and say I dropped my phone everytime I call..why did I pay 60 dollars for applecare?
Dude... I work at an Apple service provider... the reason they think you dropped it is that 99% of the time, issues like yours ARE from physical abuse of some form, and most people have no scruples and will lie through their teeth out of a sense of self-entitlement that their products should be able to, for instance, survive the washing machine. (no lie, 10 minutes out of my work day was arguing this fact with a woman once)

"I didn't spill liquid on my MacBook!!"
(at which point the customer is brought back to see the corrosion coating their motherboard)
"Well I didn't do that, so it MUST have been one of you guys."

Seriously, I want to have sympathy for you, man, but too many pricks have ruined it for the rest of us.

Does this mean no iPhone port of Song Summoner???? LAME!
I think the limitation is that you can not access the library for the purpose of PLAYING the tracks. After all, it makes no sense for these restrictions when they allow it on the iPod.

iPhone, now with Quake!

Just went up on Cydia.

I'm sure there's better ones out there, but thought that since we're on a gaming forum (technically), I might as well share what I made with the rest of you.

It's a ringtone of the Super Mario Bros. Underworld music, complete with the "Hurry Up" tone near the 30 second mark to let you know you're running out of time to answer the call, and the death noise at the very end.

Christ, what an outdated way to take in music.
Don't be dumb. Millions of people have a favorite morning talk show that they would love to listen to on their iPhone. I want it for exactly that.

how do you add contacts to palringo?

contacts or services?

i made a palringo account, then logged in, then went to service area (first icon on top) and added the services

then you go to contacts page (middle icon on top) then hit edit then the plus button then add away

its a little confusing

im not even sure if getting a palringo account is necessary but whatever

I installed it, got it working, decided to move the icon to my first page and now my iphone 3G is bricked. Downloading 2.0 to run a restore now.

EDIT: Managed to get it up and running with a manual reset. No idea if it is related to this app or just a 2.0 fuck up.

Holy shit! I love this instant photo feature. I just sent a photo to my friend that I just took that second on MSN. That is really neat.

Question: Anybody know a way to turn off that annoying "Camera would like to use your current location"? I tried in settings, but nothing seemed to work.

It adds like 5 extra seconds to an already buggy and slow camera. Thanks!

scummvm is up on cydia!!!

stupid :( you can't listen to music while using palgrino
Before someone goes off saying that this is an SDK limitation like in the gaming board's iPhone thread, there are a few apps that CAN run your tunes in the background, with full headset/home button double-tap controls. Considering the things I'm reading in Palgrino's reviews, it wouldn't surprise me if it was just the developer being incredibly lazy.

*deep breath* Sorry, got a rant coming...

I get that this is an exciting new platform and all, but that's no excuse to rush and dump garbage into the App Store for the prestige of being one of the first to have their stuff in the store. So many apps are outright missing features they should all have, not to mention other sloppy presentation/functionality issues. And then there's the problem that the App Store is geared towards ALL nations that the iPhone is available in, and almost none of the apps are multi-lingual (not even Monkey Ball, WTF SEGA!!) or feature support for their functions in other countries (none of the movie theater apps supported use in Canada and the feature is only coming in an update after the Canadian App Store rated the apps into oblivion and beyond)

So far, EVERYTHING is lacking polish, most of which can't be blamed on the "2.0 sucks" scapegoat developers are using, but we can't blame Apple for keeping the floodgates open, because if they put the hammer down and forced developers to prep apps for international use or to clean them up some more, every blog and journalist would cry to their mommies that Apple's a big meanie. Kind of a PR catch-22 for them.
So the only ones to blame are the developers, who are rushing too quickly to make a fast buck or earn accolades and not realizing the easiest way to earn an accolade is to do something so well that it can't be criticized in the first place.

My guess is that you can either choose between the iPod or your own audio, and not switch between them after startup.

Might be a bad question but can I install Cydia if my phone isn't Jailbroken?

I've used 3.6gigs worth of data on my 3G in just over 2 weeks. In comparison to my OG iphone where under usage statistics it says I've sent/received about 6 gigs over the past 10 months browsing daily. A pretty amazing stat, and really shows how much the device can do with 3G speeds. Nothings better than streaming feature length movies while bored and at work.

FM is actually a good feature. I thought it was pretty useless until I bought a zune, but I used the FM radio more than I used the music at times.

You make up a small minority of users. Most people carrying about several hundred hours of music aren't turning to the FM radio on their media device to get music. Statistically they will listen to FM/Satellite radio in the car, but that's about it.

Where are you streaming full length films from?

I've noticed that the past few times when I've powered off my iPhone or restarted it, when I go to view my data usage it's always less than it read before the restart. For example, last week I was at 130 MB received, after restart it read 67. I got back up to 110 MB, restarted, now it's at 70 MB.

Is this a bug? I really feel I can't trust the data counter any more with these erratic readings. I have 6 GB/month so I'm not worried, but it'd be nice to have a reliable counter. Anyone else notice this?

The layout sucks and it's mostly public domain stuff or things they've acquired the rights to(so it's all legit files), but I've found some good stuff so far.

Hmm... interesting find. I skimmed through looking for stuff, and didn't see much that would keep my attention. Would love it if Hula brought their library to the iPhone though. :D

It's always been like that, though. The thing people are cranky with (it seems) is that some apps are KILLING the iPod app, or giving you no control methods for your music while the app is in use. Which, as I said, is developers being lazy.

How are 3G iphone owners experience with the 3G speeds so far? I finally had a chance to go into an AT&T store today to see if 3G might be worth the upgrade alone, but I was finding it wasn't much faster at loading web pages than my 2G iphone is. The 3G model indicated it was on a 3G network but, performance wise, you'd hardly know.

I definitely see a speed improvement with the GPS app, but it's still not as fast as I would like. I agree that websites seem to load at about the same speed. This is in LA btw.

How are you guys all dealing with charging the phone? Do you wait till the battery is almost gone before charging it, or just plugging it in whenever?

Also, I'm a little annoyed that you can only sync it to one iTunes library. I'd like to be able to sync it to my laptop at home as well as my PC at work just because it's more convenient.
