How do I jailbreak my phone? Version 2.2

Do I upgrade to 2.2.1 and follow this website?

Oh, and very important... if I fuck it up, can it be reset using itunes?

Use this link: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

If you don't care about unlocking and only want to jailbreak, you're fine. Also, you can always restore in iTunes to a factory default pre-jailbreak. I've done it many times.

If you can restore so simply why does it say this: "# GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool. "

If you defy that golden rule, why can't you restore and get back to 2.2?

Because non modified ipsw's have an update for the modem firmware, which doesn't get rolled back I believe, and the new firmware hasn't been made unlockable yet.

edit: And I should mention that you can still restore, you just won't be able to unlock your phone. You're getting the two ideas confused.

It's only for the ability to UNLOCK. There's no unlock available for the new baseband upgrade they did for 2.2...if you only care about Jailbreaking you need not worry about it and restoring back.

Same way that you originally bought it, just click the download button in iTunes. It'll say some kinda prompt like "since you already purchased this app, it's free to redownload" and then it'll begin.

so i need to look for them again in the store. hmm...

Are we back to this topic again too?

RK why don't you just ditch the iPhone and get something suits your needs more fully. It's been months since we had that first conversation.
Because someone had brought up the Japan situation. I only came in here to express my joy that emoji are finally functional.
What annoys me is the whole "suits you more fully" bit as if the only feature I really want is some crazy idea instead of basic goddamned functionality.
And anyway I can't get out of the contract for a good year and a half.
With some of the inane and irrelevant shit going on in this thread, especially from you of all people, I don't see what your problem is but then again you fail to see mine so we're at an equal page.

Fair enough. You were responding to the Japanese thing. Just seems that you are so unhappy with it that I though you would have tried to move on. I understand the market is different there. I think we all do. Just thought we had beat that dead horse enough already.

Also, what inane and irrelevant stuff am I taking part in exactly? I hardly post in this thread any more.

I recall you and Juice talking about some programming shit or another. My point is that a lot of people care about that as much as people care about Japan's shit. This is a huge mega thread, so shit you don't care about is gonna pop up.

I like the iPhone, it could and SHOULD be better though. It's just annoying to me as they are clearly working on trying to fix certain things about the iPhone here, but the big one, the one that is clearly doable since there is a jailbreak hack for it, has been left ignored so far. It's just a huge inconvenience even though I obviously live my life just fine.

But now I can send my lady a smiley at least.

what? i am running 2.2 and used quickpwn to jailbreak and unlock.

for ALL iphone unlocking/jailbreaking needs go to

www.iclarified.com

edit:

you just restore using the official itunes firmware, then hack it using quickpwn and old bootloader files.

How do you block calls? I keep getting a stupid automated message on a daily basis and I can't figure out how to ignore/block the number on my iphone.

I don't think you can. I used to get all these marketing calls - annoying as hell. I used to dream up ways i could track them down and murder them. Seriously.

For some reason it has died down a bit somewhat.

What I did was created a new contact called "Don't Answer" and then just assign all telemarketer crap to that (in your Recent Calls list click the blue arrow thingy to the right of their phone number and then at the bottom it says "Add to Existing Contact"). Do that for every number you don't want... Now the important part is to have a silent ringtone (find via google) assigned to the "Don't Answer" contact. They'll still be able to call you but you wouldn't hear it ringing.

Not the greatest solution but it's better than nothing.

Wow that's genius. Can you link us the silent ring tone?

Also does anyone know if there is a way to answer a call (while the phone is locked) without having to swip your finger across the screen? I wish there was an option to answer a call by pressing the home button.

Your phone carrier put that shit on there, not Apple or anyone else related to the iPhone. As it is, this is why it sucks to hear you talk about it again, because your problem is with your Japanese carrier and the shitty program they put on there, and it's not anything anyone else has ever seen or can help you with. Everyone else on the planet already has the functionality you're wanting.

The bolded doesn't even make sense.
And despite whatever may be going on in your brain, I did not come here for your help. I was just making comments that it's not all the fancy features that Japanese phones have that the iPhone lacks (because the iPhone's many other features make up for them many times over) but goddamned lack of basic functionality.
That's all.
You can go back to making fun of people with stupid cases and ugly hacked themes now.

So my Wife and I are thinking of getting iPhones...if a new iteration is coming out, I might want that, since I'm a tech-whore. But is there any clue as to what the difference will be? I'm not sure I can justify it when I know that there's little that the iPhones does that it doesn't already have. If we're talking the difference between iPod generations 5 and 6, then I'm gonna spring this weekend, but I can't seem to find any concrete info on what Gen 3 would bring.

Apple doesn't tell you what's in future products because then you'd just wait for the future product.

Honestly, I think Nintendo is about the only company I've seen to ever successfully pull off pre-announcing something while an existing product was still on shelves. I have no idea how the DS has had such an incredible winter when they already announced the DSi.

Have you people checked out Zen Bound?

Holy shit. The fucking game is brilliant. These concepts is what the iPhone was made for. The reviews are off the charts too, deservedly so.

I'm sure Im late to the game, but Im not gonna trudge through this thread.

You should check out the App Store thread in Gaming:

Look out for Stoney Mason's unbelievable genre round up posts.

Is anyone else having incredibly annoying problems with the app store on the iphone lately? Every damn time I open up, I get a different list of available application updates - all updates I've previously downloaded.

I'll open up the app store once, it'll show no available updates. I'll open it up another time, it'll show 7 updates, all of which have been installed. Another time, maybe 5 updates - 3 that were already installed, 2 that weren't.

WTF is up with this?

Yeah this has been happening to me too the last few days. Thought it was just my phone but I guess it's a problem on Apple's end.

i've had this happen on both the iphone app store and itunes app store. I just ignore the updates for the night and try again the next day.

annoying but hopefully will be fixed soon.

I jailbroke before but have been running stock firmware again for a while now. Is Backgrounder stable now? That's the one function I really need above all.

Debating between iPhone and Bold right now... hows the keyboard on iPhone? Do you get used to the touch eventually?

Takes little to no time to master. I have no problem with the onscreen keyboard.

The keyboard and usage is mostly fine. Fine for sms and the occasional short email. Don't get me wrong, it is genius in its execution, but in the end, it's still a software keyboard. In the heat of the moment, it can lag. The key to using it is to ignore what is ACTUALLY happening and keep typing away - 95% of the time it catches up and corrects what you were typing anyway.

True, but the fact that iPhone does everything I want at this point is a good enough reason to upgrade from my Voyager, although it means moving off Verizon (which is meh anyways)

Sounds like you've made up your mind then :D

The only thing I am worried about concerning the new iPhone is that it will have MMS and the 2nd/1st gen won't get an update for it. I'd be very disappointed if Apple/AT&T made it happen this way though.

See, that could be added, but I don't really want/care about that particular feature.

(I feel like Guybrush talking to Stan to talk him down on the boat)

I can almost guarantee that Apple wants the iPhone to have a common OS base for all the devices they've sold (or almost all). If MMS is added to the new OS, old iPhones will get it too.

I think the only risk I see is for people who've had an iphone for 2 years and are thus no longer being reported as monthly subscription revenue at Apple (I'm not talking about AT&T monthly fees, but how Apple accounts for the original purchase price of the phone).

the update for them will likely not be free but 10-20 bucks as for ipod touch users.

Just thought I'd ask here as well:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having two accounts vs. changing countries on the account details, besides convenience? Am I allowed unlimited, whenever changes to the country?

How does syncing apps with multiple stores/accounts work exactly? Would I have to log in to the appropriate store before checking for updates for those apps, or does it just check all apps regardless of store (like podcasts)? If I had apps from several stores on the SAME account, would it repeatedly pop up "Sorry that app is not available in your country" every time I checked for updates?

I just decided to jailbreak. It was ridiculously simple and painless using QuickPwn.

All I can say is

HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS SOONER

Because you like your iPhone not to crash 3 4 times a day?

Video recording, emulators, I'm pretty sure there's a way to get copy/paste working, complete theme/icon reskins.. all kinds of stuff really.

For the 10 minutes of effort it took to jailbreak, yes this was totally worth it.

RevenantKioku said:

tons of customization not available other wise? the ability to change your background for one. and categories is a huge reason. not everyone wants to have 10 pages to swipe through.

Tobor said:
None that I've ever seen.
The only one that interests me is fixing the problem I have with the iPhone. If there was an actual decent looking customization skin, sure, but there has never been one.
From reading comments on the jailbreak pages, it sounds like a complete crapshoot if you have success or a broken phone and I don't need a broken phone.

If anything goes wrong you just put it into recovery mode to restore and it goes back to default settings. They've made this shit completely foolproof.
