Why? I have 16BG and it's never full and with apps like OrbLive it'll never need to be. If they lead off with storage increases, instead of relegating it to a quiet apple.com change, I'll be very disappointed

I'd like to put around 20 GB of music on my phone and still have plenty of room for videos and apps. 32GB is an absolute necessity for me on the new phone.

I find it weird that you have never found yourself wanting a copy and paste function.

Like what if someone sends you an address and you want to put it into Google to get directions from where you are? Instead of having to write it down or remember it you could just copy/paste as we have been doing on computers for the last 20 years.
I forgot this.

For long addresses, I've had to write them down on paper, then type it into Google.

:(

32GB Phone would indeed be great, I'd actually put music on it if that were the case.

Why are we thinking small? 32GB? I hate these little increments. Heck, let's do 120GB's and be done with it already. Or do we have to wait until 2014 for that?

I have an 8GB and hate having to move stuff in and out. I doubt a 32GB would meet my needs. Maybe at first, but not with my growing library of media.

Affordable solid state storage is what is limiting the capacity. The price of an iPhone with the amount of SS storage that you're asking for would be astronomical.

People having over 100 gigs of music is crazy to me.

How much money have you spent on music and how long did it take you to get all that?

It's not realistic or even possible to expect more than 32GB in the next iPhone, and 64GB in the next Touch.

If it were even doable, the cost would be astronomical. The flash memory will rise as costs decrease, no sooner.

EDIT: KFJ and I both said astronomical. Awesome.

I have 34 gigs of music.
A premium 64 gig model would be the best thing ever, but I'll be happy with a 32 gig model.
I'm still rockin' the day one 8 gig model, so I definitely feel the space limitation.

16gig might seem like it's enough, but when you keep the device for ~2 years it definitely is not.

i am dj myself and i have something about 20-30 GB of music. It took about 8 years to get that much music. But i get 10-20 new songs every day but usually i only save maybe 2 songs per. I am in some dj pools where you get everything month before they are released and all for free. If I would save every single song i get it would be about 1 gig new musik per month, probably even more because they are all at least 320kbps.

Considering that Apple only makes ONE model of iPod over 32GB, I'd say you are in the minority. Most people don't find it necessary to carry their entire music and video library with them at all times. Even when I had an iPod big enough to fit my entire library I don't think I actually needed any more than 25% of that on the go.

If you're using iTunes and still find it difficult to manage what songs are on it and not maybe you should google iTunes tips.

Pretty cool stuff, but I imagine 99.9% of people that have over 100gigs of music aren't DJs getting hand-outs. :D

I'm just picturing people with a houseful of CDs that they spent days upon days ripping or something.

Guys are we forgetting that double tapping zooms in on a webpage section? Rose is just talking out of his ass.

It's not even that. People just plain do not have that much music. I know on forums like this it's normal to have giant libraries, but all of my friends have like 1-5 GB of music. It's insane to me every time I look through their iPods or whatever music player they have and I have to ask "so you've seriously only listened to about 15 albums for the last decade?" Even people that go to local concerts every week are rocking iPods with only like 50 albums. To have over 30 GB of music is not that typical.

You'll see a 64GB bump in the Touch, but not the phone. The Touch fits two flash chips, but the iPhone only has room for one, which is why the max Touch is always double the max iPhone.

I'm still on a 2G 8GB as well. I can't wait to have more space. I have almost 1GB in apps alone at this point.

But I don't want a touch. :[
There has only been one time in my life that I've had an iPod bigger than my music library and it was amazing.

You never, ever had to think about it.

Then you have a two year wait. Learn to love smart playlists, that's how I've learned to manage with just 5GB of music on my 8GB iPhone.

Actually that's probably even more true than what I said. Yeah, "normal" people don't have over 32GB of musak.

Smart playlists don't do it for me.
Look, I'm not bitching.. I'm just saying the more the better.

I get along fine with my 8 gigs now, I'll get along fine with the 16/32 they give us this summer.

RE: "normal people dont have much music"
I agree, probably 85% would never fill up 8 or even 16 gigs.
But there ARE those people and its hard not to feel bitter they don't cater to us.
They used to. You used to be able to buy an ipod that was half an inch thicker and costs 500$
I just wish it was the same nowadays.

App Store description said:
OrbLive is a breakthrough application that provides a new way to enjoy your media on the iPhone or touch.

The traditional iPod approach is to download and store (sync) a limited part of your media collection to your iPod so that you can carry it around in your pocket for playback while you are mobile.

*more marketing speak*
- Unlimited music, video and photo playback. You are not limited by the storage on the device. You have the virtually unlimited storage of your home network and internet based services. A "Terabyte" iPhone/touch is reality today.

$10 as opposed to whatever Apple decides to rip us off for a bigger flash drive...

Orblive doesn't support Mac.
I own simplify media.. but it pretty much sucks.
especially over edge

No thanks, I want local storage, and the iPod interface. Not to mention I don't always have the best signal at work. I need a bigger iPod in my phone, not internet streaming.

I can't believe there is someone bitching about a new model having more memory. WTF?

I wonder if Apple will ever integrate streaming into the iPod interface.

Every design is a compromise.

the iPod classic caters to the music collector. It has 120 GB of storage.

The iPhone has more limited space restrictions and more strict battery considerations. placing a hard drive in there would make it too large, too heavy and with too little battery life to be a good product. or, to be specific, to be a good product in the eyes of Apple execs.

64GB flash chips don't exist yet.

I'm not bitter about the iPhone not having a 32 or 64 GB model yet because i understand the compromises necessary to make the device work the way it does.

In a couple years, there will no longer be the same memory chip issues and it becomes a moot point.

FWIW, I have 40 GB of music, around 6 GB of video and several gigs of apps. Once the 64 GB model comes out, I'm replacing my current 16 GB model.

I understand the compromise, but they could put two flash chips in the iPhone and make it thicker and more expensive.
No one but me would buy it.. but they could do it.

You have the 16GB now? I could get by with that, but I'm stuck in the 8GB ghetto. :lol 32 will get me to buy again.

At least you understand you're being irrational. :lol That's more than I can say for some other discussions in this thread. We are the mercy of the majority, my friend.

Why is wishful thinking irrational?

Ok, I guess by definition wishful thinking is irrational.
But it's not a bad thing.

I know were not gonna get anything larger than 32gigs this year, if that.
But christ would it be sweet.

Realistically, I could see them offering just a 16gig model with no expensive model.

Does anyone else here use DOCK for navigation?
I just started using it yesterday and am completely in love with it.
It's sooooo much easier and quick. It's superduper simple too.
It works perfectly with poof. I have all my favorite apps on page one, and then the ones I use much less frequently hidden.. and just access them with dock. It can even speedial people!

If you haven't heard of it. You just slide your finger up from the bottom of the screen and a row of categories appears. Then you select which category you want and slide your finger a bit higher, then the application shortcuts appear.

Oh, I don't mind more space; my library can't fit on what's available either. However I was responding to someone saying that all he cares about is more space. Bigger capacity flash drives will come around as a mater of course but I'd be really disappointed if Apple spend their time focusing on how to fit in a 32 GB drive ahead of say a camera with flash or a better battery. Double the battery life and half the storage size and I'd still buy it in a flash.

I used to but the new update wasn't working for me. Where did you get those icons from?

Why do people assume space issue comes about from music only when the iPhone is a multimedia device?

I own several iTunes movies I got with some Blu Rays, plus a ton of other movies I ripped from dvd. Plus video podcasts >>>>> audio podcasts. Plus pics, plus apps. 32GB seems pretty small after a while.

And yeah, I think we can get 64GB or greater for the iPhone's original $599 price.

I would be extremely dissapointed if the new iPhones are really 4 and 8gb. I'm already having to limit my music collection on my 16gb, like mentioned above this phone is not only for music. You have freaking videos, pics and apps that pile up and many other things. 32gb would be really fucking awesome.

I've been thinking about this. You're right, double tapping currently initiates a zoom, but that could always be removed in favor of cut and paste. Pinch zooming is arguably more familiar to users and makes the double tap zoom redundant.

I'm not saying this is a lock, just thinking out loud.

I assume you meant to say 8 and 16. They haven't sold a 4GB model in over a year. The new model phone will either stay at 8/16, or bump to 16/32, depending on the costs of flash memory.

VanMardigan, they aren't going to increase the price. Whatever can be added while keeping the costs and pricing the same will be added, nothing more.

My question is do you actually need all that on your phone at all times though? Like was said earlier, smart playlists are great for rotating shit on and off it.

Smart playlists work for videos? And what do I know if I'm going to need it or not? If I'm in line at the bank and feel like watching Dark Knight, why not? I'm obviously managing at some level, since I have an 8gb, but I'd rather NOT manage. I have to shuffle music videos in and out, videos in and out, make sure to watch video podcasts so I can get those out of the way. It sucks.

:(

I'd love for a higher end model as a choice.

Mobile reports that UK carrier O2 is planning to cut prices on the iPhone in May ahead of an expected summer revamp of the device.

The 3G iPhone will be free on its £35 and £45 per month tariffs from May. The 16GB version is currently only free on the £75 per month contract, while the 8GB handset is free only on the £75 and £45 per month deals.

Customers currently spend between £59 and £159 for an iPhone on the £35 and £45 monthly tariffs.
Mobile believes that the summer revamp will come in June, or more likely July, of this year, which fits with Phil Schiller's previous comments on Apple product cycles. Apple's recent announcement of a March 17th media event also is suggestive of last year's pattern of a March media event followed by a June announcement and a July launch.

Well, yeah, so we hope for the realistic best case scenario, which is a 32GB model in June.

what about double tap and hold? if the delay is set at over, say, 2 seconds then both operations can co-exist.

i think we all hashed this out a while back in this thread. the only way to get around the zoom function or the loupe/insert point function is to either have a standalone button on the menu bar for starting copy/paste "mode" or do a double tap and hold (or triple tap and hold, but that's getting nuts)

I'm just not sure I see the point. There is already an alternate zoom method in place, a quite famous one. Why overcomplicate the UI when you can repurpose the double tap?

Orblive sounded awesome until I got to the part where it requires a jailbroken iPhone. I don't want to do that. I shouldn't have to do that. :(

I may have to do that.

I really prefer the precision and speed of the double tap over the pinch
I feel like I'm having a conversation in the Seinfeld universe now: "gotta love the pinch"
. I always get the text column the right size with no fuss.

I feel that removing it in order to put in copy/paste is going to force people to relearn a move they've been using for almost two years and cause confusion, mass panic and riots in the streets.

not to say that Apple won't do it. I just think they'd be better off by not doing it.

The double tap to zoom in on the text perfectly is genius. I use that WAY more often than I would copy/paste. Literally every non-iPhone version site requires the double tap so that you have just the text percetly centered.

I definitely understand the love for the double tap zoom. I use it myself. I'm just not sure there's any other way to add C/P that isn't incredibly frustrating. We'll have to wait and see tomorrow.

And LC, you gotta love the pinch. Who doesn't love the pinch?

Same here. I'm hoping for something similarly simple to zoom out

I've never created a smart playlist for videos, but I would think they would work for them as they do for music.

It sounds like you just want to be able to carry your entire video and music libraries on your phone and I think you are in the minority on that one. Apple is a business and we all know a businesses likes to maximize profits. Not to mention that the technology to do that on a phone isn't there yet at an affordable price.

Double tap is what makes mobile safari nearly as usable as a full browser. They can't take it out. But LCfiner is right, we hashed it out previously. Double tap and hold is how a MacBook trackpad does it (with tap to click enabled), and it would work fine on the iPhone. In a text field tap to hold brings up the loupe, so people are at least familiar with it. A double tap hold will distinguish it from standard double tap in regular text, as well as single tap hold in typing text fields.

[seinfeld] and what's the deal with tapping? who taps? is he a tapper? who wants to tap? why not pinch? pinching is good. everyone loves a good pinch [/seinfeld]

I didn't even know it in the first place to forget it! It seems a little haphazard to me. Pinch-zoom works better, imo.
