How do you get internet on those?

Is it part of the regular phone plan?

Is it seperate?

Does the touch screen feel like the DS one? or is more solid?

So apart from the activation issues, are any of you seeing any flaws that don't look like they could be fixed with a software upgrade? I'm talking about things like first run iPod Nano's being scratch magnets (iPhone obviously isn't), Macbook Pro heat issues, Macbook discoloration, etc. I really want one but I'm wary of first-off-the-factory-line Apple products.
I would say the only thing that I would be worried about them upgrading is the storage space and make it 3G. But damn, everything for me is running perfectly and anything that it's missing (custom ringtones, sideboard keyboard used more, ect) has good probability to be updated soon.

Not sure if anyone saw this video but yeah. Screen don't scratch easily at all.

OH MY ****ING GOD THAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I HAVE EVER SEEN

I have Broken Sword (both of them) on my PSP already, and despite this fact, the day ScummVM runs the iPhone is the day I'll buy one. That's right, I'll switch to America's shittiest carrier because of ScummVM.

The activation for this thing was so awesome. I had the new data plan added to my account, my Razr deactivated, and everything ready to go in 3 minutes. It automatically imported the all the connection params for my POP mail accounts and when I turned on my phone had my unread messages.

Everything about it has been sweet so far, listened to some music this morning, surfed the web, did work email, all on Edge. The screen is super bright and sharp for web stuff. My other iPods are a shuffle and a mini so the coverflow thing is so cool for me.

MS wants you to move up to UMPCs for "real internet" and not their Windows Mobile phones. This is because no WM phone OEM are willing to stick gigs of Nandflash into their devices to allow for such browser. OS footprint for iPhone vs. WM phone is like a Semi truck vs a Yugo.

I think the "real internet" part of the iPhone will be the most outclassed part in shortest time since "real internet" without flash website support is more like "real internet" from the year 2000 instead of 2007.

If I wanted tiny "real internet" device right now and was willing to spend the money, I'd choose something like the OQO model 2, which isn't much bigger than the iPhone (4.5"x2.4"x.46" vs 5.6"x3.3"x1.0"). You get 800x480 LCD, real X86 processor, actual full Windows instead of OSX lite, built in EVDO rev A, and real browsers that supports flash and everything else "real internet" demands in 2007. It's $2000, but you get a full PC that can do everything except high end 3D gaming. And that's based on 2006 tech.

By next year, you will have the same kind of experience but for UMPCs that are closer to $1000 with the coming of the Menlow platform and the Silverthorne processor from Intel. Now ask yourself: $600 for a PDA+ or $1000 for a real PC not much bigger? I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat, and have a real cheap phone with it instead of having a iPod, phone, gimped internet tablet in one device that shares the same battery that you can't swap.

You get internet via WiFi when you're within range of an access point, or via AT&T's reportedly slow EDGE network for everywhere else. All iPhone plans are built around the idea of using the EDGE network frequently, so the lowest plan is $60/month with unlimited data (aka EDGE internet) and 200 text messages. If you use AT&T/Cingular already, you can add the iPhone plan for an extra $20 a month.

The touch screen feels FAR more solid than the DS one.

Yeah, I saw that video. It's insane. Those guys really punished the poor thing.

I don't care so much about 3G. I will be near wi-fi most of the time, and I have never even used mobile internet before so it's not like I will know what I am missing by only using EDGE (which seems to be at least decent now). I have an iPod for all my music if I really need to take it all with me. 8GB is fine for having at all times. I actually already cut my 18.75GB music library down to a 6.5GB "must have" playlist for my forthcoming iPhone. I figured I should leave some space on there for other stuff like the occasional TV show, plus the OS takes like 700MB.

my only real concern is the silly way that itunes wants to synch with devices. I am sure some 3rd party will come along and make an easy way to drag/drop stuff on and off the phone though.

Got to put the phone through it's paces a bit today. And i'm extremely impressed. THe only major hitch i find is that the phone won't connect to my dlink wireless router no matter what settings i try. Sucks balls! But otherwise it's awesome. These are some pics of the unit and some pics taken with the iphone. In bright light the camera is amazing but as you can see in dim light the results aren't that great.

I'm very happy with my purchase so far. I listened to four hours worth of music on my ride today, I watched three 24 minute anime episodes and i've been surfing the web as well as taking photos. The battery just now got down to 20%. This is amazing, and when you factor in that it was right out of the box without being fully charged it's even more so.

Success!! I got an 8GB model at an Apple Store this afternoon. Anyone living in Austin, and looking for an iPhone, the Barton Creek Store has 4 and 8GB models available. The Domain had a few 4GB models Looks like hitting up the Apple Stores is the way to go. I already cancelled my online order. Now off to activate it! :D

Edit: Oh yeah, and for those that say there is no MMS, you do know that you can send messages via e-mail to a phone with picture attachments right?

Are we looking at the next generation of DS touch screen if Apple is successful enough to bring the price down of the iphone touchscreen?

I can't say for sure since I'm not a tech expert. But from what I'm able to observe (and someone please feel free to correct me) the DS touchscreen is geared for gameplay scenarios (aka relatively unpredictable input) and with a stylus, while the iPhone's input is more "systematic" and done with your hands. I'm not sure if any of this actually matters, so again, someone please chime in if they have something better to say.

As far as screen quality is concerned, I'm sure Nintendo would like to offer a screen like this when compatible with their economic model.

They are two totally different types of touch screens. The iPhone one only works with finger tips, not a stylus. So, I'm not sure you would ever see it in a DS.

(posted from an iPhone, btw.)

Aww **** I need one of these now. I'm moving though and really cant afford to be spending so much money so frivously.. but god damn do I need one. This will be very difficult.

From the start I thought you enjoyed shitting on the Handtop/UMPC concept (guess I was wrong). Overall I pretty agree with your above statements. Even more so (from my perspective), Ultra Mobile PCs will be the true evolution of handheld technology.
Regardless of all that, its far from ever reaching the mass hype/popularity of the iPhone.

this is kinda random, but what do you guys think are the chances of Apple's next iPod being the iPhone, but with more storage space and no phone parts? like, just a wide screen video playing touch screen iPod.

In my opinion, UMPCs are a joke because of the operating system. I think you need an OS specifically designed for a smaller device. Just throwing Windows on these things is just stupid.

That's where Apple has the step here. They will be able to continue to evolve the iPhone OS overtime and make it a great OS to use on smaller devices.

Really, for 90% of people out there, they don't need something like a UMPC. Most people don't want to be carrying around a full featured OS like Windows in their pocket. I think something more in the direction of the iPhone's OS X lite is ample enough for the time you are away from your computer.

About 95 percent.

No phone parts and no internet parts. I would say the 6G iPod will be almost exactly like the iPod section of the iPhone. Picture the 5G iPod, but the screen will be the whole front of the iPod, and then all the touch stuff.

Jobs specifically mentioned new iPods in the pipeline when he addressed the company the day before the iPhone's release. I would bet money on these being released in October/November. They've gone two holiday seasons with the current iPod model, change is coming.

Very likely.

i still cant understand why apple would partner with AT&T... Why not Sprint or Verizon... AT&T is crap...

Would it be wrong to assume that they'll eventually get covered on other services? I'm probably just going to wait for a Verizon option when it comes.

I think they wanted it to be GSM so they could sell one model it around the world and T-Mobile wasn't a big enough company. It's really no more complicated than that.

I really don't understand the hype for iphone. It does nothing new at all as far as I know. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
*puts up massive flame shield*

It's all about the design and OS.

I thought that when it was announced 6mos ago, Jobs said that it was going to be AT&T 4 Life!!! or for a very long time...

Hm. Well, once my latest plan is done with Verizon, I might switch over. The iPhone will be even more improved by then, and I'll probably have some money under my belt.

But as for now, bring on the new model iPods.

oh noes!

I have locked it up good... I was talking a call and browsing the web (at the same time!) then this huge image locked up the browser. Now my phone is unresponsive.... is there a hard reset somewhere? :(

edit: ok you hold home+lock button for 8sec. /whew :lol

i havent seen the internet like that on a phone before. or for that matter, an ipod + phone combo...have you?

its not worth all the hype, but its obviously an amazing device that has some things we've never seen before.

just got back from the Apple store. place was packed with people waiting to check it out.

it's pretty damn beautiful, and i gotta say, loved the tabbed browsing. i'll have no choice but to get one once the 2nd version comes out.

only until 2009, isn't it?

I'm stuck in a verizon plan as well, but iphone looks pretty damned tempting.

Apple went to Verizon first, Verizon turned them down, so they went to AT&T.

I have a verizon contract until this october, so I might get the iphone then, but I keep hearing that AT&T has a crappy service especially in NYC where I am...

How is it not a scratch magnet when the screen is completely exposed when you carry it around?
