With the OG iPhone, I kept it naked because the metal backing deflected grime well. But with 3GS now, that plastic backing is even more of a magnet for fingerprints than the screen is, so I'm contemplating some sort of skin. OTOH, it's certainly more slip resistant this way, but I only had 1 or 2 mishaps with the OG phone over two years, so I'm not really concerned overall.
I'm in the same boat; I never used any sort of case for my OG, but the plastic back of the 3GS just won't do. I looked into cases, but the thought of adding bulk to the phone seems unwieldily.

My wife and I ordered skins from Gelaskins and SkinIt for the backs of the phones. We had Gelaskins for our iPods and were very impressed with them; they're high quality and have an ever-so-slightly tacky texture which seems great for the iPhone. SkinIt allowed me to create a custom design, so I created a mostly black skin with a small logo. I'll post impressions as soon as we receive the products.

Can anyone gimme a lesson in Push 101? I have MobileMe, I have my iPhone tied to my email addresses, I have Push on in the phone... Where else do I have to enable it? I use Mail... is there anything I have to do from my domain/website's end, because as of right now it ain't working. :3

Anyone have an answer for this? I'm a little confused by push as well. Is MobileMe required for your emails to push? Im just using gmail now.

I am thinking of one of those film skins for the back too, i never had screen problems with my original iphone and it was even taken to the beach.

Ive always wanted to get a decal of the FFVII meteor logo on my phone/psp, im thinking about it (a nice light grey to go along with the white back.

I just updated from an OG to a 3GS...and I'm loving the hardware, but I'm going to have to buy all new accessories. Neither my old car charger or alarm clock/radio charges my 3GS. Ugh.

edit // Turns out its an issue where apple removed firewire (pin) charging capabilities from the 3G onward. I guess its time to move onward.

Hey guys, a little help. My friend and his wife just got 3gs' yesterday. Can they synch both phones to the sane iTunes account? To the same computer? What's the best way for them to synch both without super headaches?

They run windows if it makes a difference. I am assuming they can simply synch different playlists and contact lists right? What about apps?

Lastly can an iPhone synch music from a shared library or music on an iTunes server?

Thanks for the input, I only synch one phone and all my music is on that computer so I don't have experience with all this

Anything that's in your local iTunes account can be synced in multiple iDevices. Each device will have their own options how how you want to sync them. Music/movies/apps/playlists will be no problem to separate out...contacts would be a bigger issue, but I can't speak to that.

Finally got my Apple 3GS 16GB Black! :D

Upgrading from my original Iphone to the 3GS s a huge leap ;O

The S in 3GS stands for Speed? I think it should stand for Super! Performance wise bootup is faster, apps load/run faster, internet loading is faster, 3G signal is faster wow everything is faster! The much increased specs of 200 more mghz and double ram is the main reason I upgrade to the 3GS!

External hardware wise the metallic volume bar, silent off/on, and the power buttons look way better than the black plastic of the original Iphone. The all black rear of the 3GS is indeed very sexy compared the original but damn it smudges like crazy :( The original Iphone rear exterior was all metallic which didn't smudge while the 3GS is all shiny plastic. Black shine looks hawt but yeah smudges are very noticeable.

I was thinking about not using a case at all but due to the very apparent smudge collecting rear, I ordered the Iskin Solo Nightcrawler online. The Iskin solo Nightcrawler is a nice blue transparent color that shows off the Apple Logo nicely with a tint of bluish color. The substance of the Iskin solo feels gelly like from the reviews Ive seen/read so far and looks very durable. Sadly since I ordered only today (I used expedited shipping to get it asap) they won't ship it until Monday/Tuesday and won't arrive until Wednesday/Thursday :(

So like I said smudge magnet, I didn't want 3GS to be naked so I settled for the ghetto fix and I am currently using a ziplock bag as a temporary case until my Iskin Solo Nightcrawler arrives at my door next week :lol

There is currently no push for Gmail, but all you need for MS Exchange or Yahoo! Mail is to activate it in the iPhone settings.

For GMail you have to set how often you want the phone to fetch the mail. I think it goes from 1 hour down to 15 minutes.

WHat about for POP based email that runs through Mail.app, when you have MobileMe? :3

Your question doesn't make any sense. Are you saying you have a POP e-mail account being forwarded to MobileMe? If so, then make sure MobileMe has PUSH enabled and any e-mail sent to your POP account will get forwarded to your MobileMe inbox and MobileMe will send you push updates.

What's the best way to send photos to flickr/picasaweb now with 3.0/3GS? I've done some googling, and all the tutorials are over a year old and seem to involve just emailing the photo. I could have sworn during the WWDC keynote I saw an option to send a photo immediately to flickr just like you could send a video immediately to youtube.

The best way to use Flickr on the iPhone is Mobile Fotos. It's awesome. One of the best written apps I've used.

But thus far it hasn't. Mail.app is set up to check for emails every minute, but the iPhone won't get them until I go check manually.

So I just purchased an episode of a TV show on my iPhone via wifi. It's not letting me transfer the video to my computer. In other words, is the only way to have a purchased video on both devices to make sure you buy the video on the computer, where you can then transfer it to your phone? Stupid if true.
It should sync it into iTunes when you plug it in to your computer.

For others: why so weird about smudges? I find it strange that so many are so turned off by the smudgey backing that they'd rather make their phone bulkier and cheaper looking than to just have some fingerprints on your phone.

I take it when you say "Mail.app" you are talking about the Mail application on the iPhone. Anyway, in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars make sure "Fetch New Data" is set to Push by turning Push on. The setting beneath that about "Fetch" only applies to accounts not using Push. At the bottom of the screen there is "Advanced". Click that and make sure your MobileMe account is set to use Push also.

As long as these settings are set and you have a cell or wifi connection, anything new that arrives in your MobileMe inbox will be pushed instantly to your phone. If you have an old POP account on another service that you want to piggyback on MobileMe, you need to set that e-mail account (wherever that is.. on another server or something) to always forward its e-mails to MobileMe.

Rogers still refusing to serve upgrade customers! :lol

Seriously? I was hoping to hear back from one of them today saying they would be up and running. Guessing thats why I have not recieved a call yet. Anyone here know if this is a limited issue or have an upgrade customers gotten a 3gs yet?

I've always eschewed using a case - the iPhone is so lovely to look at and so slim, why would you want to cover it up and add bulk? Most cases are an eyesore and anyway in a whole year of carrying a naked 3G in my pocket often bashing around with keys and coins it's held up just fine with hardly any scratches or buffs at all.

Having said that, I looked at the perfect gleaming shininess of my new 3GS and decided like a new mother that I must do everything to protect my perfect little baby. At the Apple Store I asked a sales girl to recommend one and she showed me the one she used - an InCase slider, which is great. It's a hard shell but with rubberized rails on the inside for shock absorption. It's really thin so it adds minimal bulk to the iPhone and it comes in black so it doesn't change the aesthetic much at all. The bottom section slides off easily for when you need to plug the phone into the standing dock.

8GB? Negotiate down to 200'

Has anybody tried the Mophie Juice Air with the 3GS? That was the case I was looking at but the reports are that it has an impact on reception. I wonder if it has an impact on the compass as well...

whats the easiest way to inform everyone in my contacts of my new phone number?

I can't seem to send to multiple people on the iphone. I suppose I could put my new sim into my old phone which CAN send to multiple contacts, but surely the iphone can...er.....right?

or can I send one of those business card things on really easily? how do I do that?

Yes, you can, just press where space for the first name is and you get the option to add more. But unless you have an unlimited txt plan just use facebook or email

Yeah, Rogers system still isn't updated and Plus stores are apparently informed not to call it in (which the dealer stores can do to upgrade you, if they wait long enough.)

4 of us "in line" were all turned away after Rogers CSRs said we were good to go. Last year, it was a stock thing. Now they have the phones and can't sell them. :lol

oh yeh but I can only seem to add one contact at a time, like select>add>select>add. can't I just select loads and add them at once? like a bunch of tickboxes or something.

Yesterday I talked to about 14 reps and nobody was willing to do the $199/$299 pricing (wanted $449/$549). Today, I called 3 times and all three times they immediately offered $199/299. Seems like a policy change.

I got my iPhone 3G last year on launch day, and have a $22.50 student voice plan + $30 iPhone value pack (sub-total: $52.50 before SAF/911/tax)

Don't bother trying to buy it in store. I went in, they have plenty of stock but their systems are down. Nothing but disgruntled customers. They only managed to sell 2 units yesterday and they didn't expect much better today

Today's shipping time says there's a back-order or 2-3 days, so Friday is their delivery estimate

I got rejected on it but two people just got it through there.

Anymore reviews on the iPhone 3GS battery life? Are there any situations that even when it is plugged in the battery still drains (like playing some games on iPhone 3G - or using PDANet ;p)

so I bought me and my wife 3Gs's yesterday. and to my dismay, one of them has a VERY yellow tint to the screen. I went to the ATT store to exchange it, and to my surprise, they absolutely refused any and all exchanges, declaring I would have to go to the apple store for an exchange. called the apple store, who verified they would replace it and had a replacement waiting. drove for 40 minutes to get there. walk in the store, they grab my replacement, then promptly tell me I can't exchange it since it was bought at ATT, and that THEY would have to exchange it.

Needless to say, I am rather pissed at this point.

Kept a cool head about it, and asked BOTH stores if I could simply 'upgrade' to the 32gb model, essentially paying an extra $100 for an exchange. ATT said 1) they have no more phones, and 2) I would be charged a %15 restocking fee DESPITE the fact that yes, they agreed it was a defect. Apple store, meanwhile, "regrettably" informed me that they would not exchange it since it wasn't bought through apple, and if I wanted to buy a replacement it would be at the un-subsidized price of $599.99 for a 16, $699.99 for a 32.

Now, I'm pretty chill. I used to work retail, I understand when corporate makes a bullshit policy, etc. Suffice it to say, I left the ATT store without making a scene, because the family of four behind me who had defective iphones was raising absolute hell, demanding to have their money refunded, contracts cancelled, etc.

either way, I'm not sure what recourse to take at this point.

Has anyone else noticed this 'yellowish' tint? I mean, it looks downright filthy, to be honest. and this is compared to ANOTHER 3GS, not a 3G.

I have the 3G but I was playing with my friends 3GS last night and it is truly amazing. Fast as fuck, video quality is amazing, it is just awesome to see such high quality playback on a beautiful screen a second after you recorded it ON YOUR PHONE.

OH. and the gps system is amazingly fun, it is basically Metal Gear Solid with the viewing direction on the bubble lol

One question though, what happened to MMS? I thought that was giong to be in the 3.0 update but when i saw it wasn't i figured it was a 3GS thing but we couldn't find it anywhere on the phone last night...

I just got the SkinIt skin. So far, I'm impressed; application was easy, and I was able to remove the skin and reapply it without any problems. The corners took a bit of attention, but everything smoothed out nicely. The skin feels completely smooth and doesn't show fingerprints despite its glossy finish. The black color on the skin is slightly different than the black of the back of the phone, but not enough to stand out.

The skin is cut so that it wraps around the top, bottom, and sides of the phone, with appropriate holes for the buttons and camera. One thing to note is that the corners of the phone are exposed. It's a logical limitation, but it's one to keep in mind if you're concerned with keeping every square millimeter of your phone in pristine condition. For me, though, it's a perfect level of protection.

I'll let you guys know how it holds up, and I'll post impressions of the Gelaskin once it arrives.

That can be explained with "lol AT&T". Same goes for tethering.

IS the itunes store still down I am trying to restore my ipod but it keeps saying
Itunes cannot connect to the itunes store. The network connection timed out.

Question:

I purchased a 32GB model off AT&T's website yesterday, and I'll be porting my Sprint number over; however, I will be breaking my contract. Will I need to pay the $200.00 fee up front, or will Sprint just bill me that? Basically, I don't want them to block the port.

I did it a few years ago and Sprint billed me. No idea if that's changed, but I don't know why it would.

Come on, http://www.apple.com isn't a confusing website to navigate. I understand not everyone keeps up with gadget news and Apple conferences, but just go to the website of the company once in a while for answers.

Finally updated my OG to 3.0
Seems like a neat update so far.

EDIT: owned again, guess it will be a few weeks until upgrades work. :lol

Wait... what the hell?
So I restored with my custom ispw and then restored the backup of my iPhone iTunes... and now Cydia is missing.. The only app that is there is ICY.
