After reading that forum I am thinking the same way you do. I thought the At&t GPS app with subscription was highway robbery but it could be worst, I could have Verizon for cell phone service.
 
In just a few short posts I went from wishing the iPhone was on Verizon to thanking God that it's not :lol Although I'm sure Apple would never let them get away with this kind of bullshit.

I feel sorry for owners of Verizon "smartphones" now.

As a former Verizon customer - dumped them in 2005 - I can confirm that while their network is damn near perfect in some parts of the country, their tendency to actually disable phone functionality and/or charge you for the smallest things is legendary. (It actually doesn't matter what phone you get from them, they're all running the same damn OS* and have virtually the same exact features.)

AT&T is the best balance of network technology and phones that actually work among the carriers in the US, don't bemoan them so easily.


(*Blackberry and WinMo devices excluded.)

This is the important part. Apple forced AT&T to submit, they'll do the same to Verizon.

Otherwise, Verizon ain't gettin' no iPhone.

But this isn't even anything new. Cellular providers were charging monthly fees of $2.99 and up for ringtones, games and other small apps on phones (both smart and not) for years. I forget what E3 it was but Sprint had a booth/setup where they had journos come and check out their wares. And it was $4.99 or something a month (or maybe it was every 3, but it was recurring) for Pac-Man on a flip phone. Of course they're also preying on the fact that you'd add it to your bill and forget to cancel it so they can keep charging you month after month.

Note that the actual ratio of images taken with the camera is 4:3 (not 3:2, which is the ratio of the screen), whether you take them in landscape or portrait.

What actually happens (at least on my 3G), is that images taken in landscape, when rotated to a landscape iPhone, has the black borders at the edge due to the difference in ratio. Portrait pictures have no borders, because it is already 'fit to screen'. Try pinch-shrinking a portrait orientation image - you'll notice it gets the borders too, when it actually is fit to screen. The oddity is really why the default for portrait is fill screen.
 
So this just happen to me. I had a bunch of music on my phone from before my harddrive went out. After reformatting my computer, I downloaded a few songs. I wanted to synch a ringtone without synching the new music library, so I just checked 'Synch Ringtones'. After the synching was done, sure enough, the new music library synched over the old one, even though 'Synch Music' was unchecked.

I'm pretty pissed for losing my old music library. For future reference, is there a way to synch a few things from iTunes without it synching over everything?

Apple doesn't care about the plans, though. They don't cry foul when AT&T ups data to $30 and makes texting $20. So, Verizon will probably rape people in plan charges, and they won't care because people don't want Verizon to save money, they want Verizon because of their service. It's not like they're the cheapest, and many people just want someone to step up so they can leave AT&T.

Does anyone take their iPhones jogging/running? Wondering if the arm band is worth it.

Man I'm wanting a 3GS so damn bad right now. Even though I love paying 60/mo for unlimited everything, I want 3G speed so bad. Plus I'm getting super annoyed with how slow and unresponsive the phone is, especially comparing it to the 3GS.

Part of me seriously wants to take the plunge...

EDIT: with lockscreen info, how do I add weather support to the lock screen? All I have now is phone, sms, email, and cal.

How does this look on a black iphone? And do they have a similar color scheme but where it's clear black? I obviously love the look of the phone but a case probably is in my best interest.
 
Hey guys..

Can't figure this one out. I updated my iPhone 2g the day 3.0 came out.. and few days ago I noticed that my girl's 3G still hadn't got the upgrade. We tried to upgrade it on her comp and it would keep getting stuck in the backing up part..

Tried it on my comp and same results.. multiple times, on both computers.

I had zero problems putting 3.0 on my older iPhone, any suggestions ?

Is something up with her phone that causes the backup part to fail?

Yup, they're still stuck in the stone-age era of 'apps' for your phone.
I remember 'buying' Ms. Pac-Man years ago.
$4.99 and I got to use it for 3 months until it expired!
 
Not surprised at the Verizon hi-jinxs. American cellular companies are descendants or former monopolies. They have no idea on how to treat customers and look to nickel and dime to death.

The premium they put on text messaging has go to be one of the biggest scams in history. Thank god for workarounds like AIM.

Its only an issue with phones that use Verizon's Brew OS. You can put whatever apps you want, from wherever you want, on Verizon phones using Blackberry, WinMo, etc.

The weather plugin isn't part of the default package. You can either add it yourself or get it with one of the LockInfo Matte UI, Gruppled LockInfo or Animated Lock Info themes.

Easiest way is to use the Matte UI theme by adding the http://simonv.chronophoto.fr/cydia/ repo

Very true. In this case though, it's just very funny how Verizon is pushing the Env Touch as being "app friendly" in these new commercials though.
 
I have a 3GS jailbroken and some jailbroken applications make my iphone go into safe mode. Winterboard, and some sbsettings extensions as well. Anyone else have this problem?

If you don't like it check out the Speck Candy Shell. I have it in black/yellow and my brother has it in white/red. Plastic in the back, rubber inside and for the border, really nice, solid and tight.

I love Monoprice's stuff, it's only $15, and I could easily slip it in my pocket. Seems like it would be perfect for those times I'd actually need that much power - on a long car trip, plane ride, etc. I don't really need one that stays attached to the iPhone at all times like the Juice Pack.

I got this in the mail last Saturday and wanted to wait until I could really use it before posting anything.

I really like it, well worth the $15 I paid ($16 shipped - monoprice is ridiculously awesome :lol)

It's small enough to fit in my pocket separately from the iPhone if I must, but it's definitely better-suited to sit in a bag or a backpack or something - whatever I'm carrying around with me in a situation where I'd actually need it. On a plane, or a long car ride, it would work perfectly.


The Test
I charged up the backup battery, and drained the battery on my iPhone. I then plugged the backup into the iPhone, and went to sleep for the night.

When I checked it out in the morning, the iPhone was completely charged to 100%, though the backup was fully drained. I have a feeling that if I unplugged the backup as soon as the iPhone finished charging, there would have been a decent amount of charge left in the backup that would have been able to boost my phone even more at a future point in time. Since it stayed plugged in, though, it kept draining throughout the night.

Also, I could keep my iPhone's protective case on while using the backup battery, which was nice.



So, it's not as convenient as a backup that acts as a case, fitting around the phone, but I also don't always need a backup with me, and a battery that form-fits like that would be more annoying than helpful. For $15, you really can't go wrong with this :D

But ATT's rate has always been $30 for smart phones. The ONLY reason it was 20 for the original iPhone was that it was missing some functionality people cosider useful in smartphones and that the Internet was edge speed. Quit trying to make this an issue of AT&T raising the prices because it's not. In fact I feel bad for sone of the blackberry users who of they want data are in fact paying $30 for edge service.

You caught me and my secret agenda!

Listen, when it comes down to it, data and texting is a lot more expensive on the iPhone than on a G1 or Pre. That's all. I don't care if all of AT&T's phones are $30 for data and $20 for texting, that's too much. Apple doesn't think it's too much, so they don't have "complete control" in all areas. They dont say "Hey, we want to sell this to as many people as possible, especially with a $99 iPhone, and $20 texting is disgusting." That's the point I'm making, that Apple isn't 100% in control, so saying that Apple would keep Verizon in check isn't entirely warranted.

All I meant was that Apple would shut down any branding/OS gimping/App store ruining that Verizon would normally be all about. The rates would be what ever they are, sure.

And as has been said, it's not iPhone price gouging, you pay the same rates for a Blackberry or whatever other smart phone on AT&T. Comparing the rates of two successful companies against Sprint and T-Mobile is not fair, they have to give the store away to stay in business.

I never once believed Verizon stood a chance of messing with the App Store, so we're on different pages. What I am saying is that Verizon finds crazy ways to charge consumers for everything, like Visual Voicemail being 2.99/month. Do I think Verizon will try, or Apple will allow, Visual Voicemail on the iPhone to be 2.99/month? No way. Do I think Apple will have any care or say in Verizon's plans, or that Verizon will necessarily look to AT&T's plan and price the iPhone's plan competitively? That's another no.

The only thing I'm saying is that Apple isn't policing service plans, and that's where I suspect Verizon is going to mess things up. That's it.

Yeah, no one would disagree with you there. Verizon will have to keep the rates consistent with AT&T to encourage switching, so I'm not worried about it.

But at the same time a lot of people want the service and aren't looking to switch to save a few bucks, and Verizon already has tons of customers who may not want to pay an ETF but do want an iPhone. They have options, I don't feel like they're pressured into matching or beating AT&T's pricing, I don't think they care.

We can speculate all day long but we won't know until(if?) it happens. I'm just playing devil's advocate and really don't care either way, I'll be sticking with AT&T. I just opened a new contract and don't have many complaints.

You're comparing phones on sub-par carriers to the top-two carriers? Sorry, but Sprint and T-mobile's service leaves a lot to be desired - also enjoy the 3g on t-mobile! I'm curious why you singled out at&t since the only other logical carrier the iPhone hits anytime soon is Verizon which has the *exact same* prices.
 
Alright iPhone GAF, go easy on me here, as I'm old, and understand mobile phone tech about as well as our parents understand computer tech.

I may have an opportunity to get a first gen iPhone from a friend. I understand now that even if I unlock it, I can't put it on Verizon due to lack of GSM/Sim Cards, yes?

That being the case, what CAN'T a first gen iPhone do that the newer ones can? Is it just a case of lower specs, so I might not hit the system reqs for certain apps/games?

You cannot put an unlocked iPhone on Verizon. You can do T-Mobile, but not Verizon.

As for specs, there aren't any "3gs only" apps yet (not counting the ones like the compass that comes preloaded). The app store serves all. The original is slower (Edge, not 3G), has less storage (4 or 8 gigs), weaker camera, slower cpu, stuff like that. Nothing really major. Compared to a 3GS, it lacks the compass, voice control or video editing.

No Verizon, ever.

Lower processor, ram, and data speed. No MMS ever, no video recording, and no voice control. It should run most games decently, you may get stuttering framerate on some of the really intensive games.

That said, it's going to be miles better than any phone you've ever owned. Enjoy.

I compared them because they are all the "hero phones" that blogs compare and match up against, and all of the carriers exist and compete against one another. But honestly, I don't even care enough to discuss this further, really. If you don't think $20 for texting is crazy, than that's fine. If you disagree with me and think Apple cares about the plan prices, or is pleased to see iPhone plans come out to around $115 after taxes, even with the strategic launch of a $99 iPhone, then that's fine. I don't. That's all.

I don't think anyone disagrees with you. The price is outrageous. I just don't believe it's a fair comparison since Sprint is one foot in the grave. If someone is only worried about cost, than, yes, Sprint has better deals right now, they're desperate.
