Not content to wait until tomorrow, I found a special after-hours hotline for AT&T to call. The lady had me power my phone off (DUH! Why didn't I try that?) and it's back in tip-top shape, AND I have the little E to the right of the AT&T logo. Oooooh snap son we are in business!

Thank you VERY much for your help, too, SuperPac!

So I'm having my first real iPhone dilemma. My FM transmitter doesn't work with the iPhone(Griffin iTrip auto). Am I just hosed here? Which FM transmitters work?

This is a known, and fairly well documented issue. No FM transmitters work with the iPhone. The radio in the cell phone interferes with the FM transmitter so it's not going to work peroply anyway.

Apple are playing with fucking fire here, their business model depends on selling yesterday's technology to a bunch of 20-something wannabe poseurs at tomorrow's prices.
I suspect that once the HELOC money runs out the little darlings will have a lot tougher time convincing mommy and daddy to buy them overly expensive Apple shit. They will simply buy more reasonably priced products that do the job just as well if not better. And the poseurs? They will all be unemployed!!!

Um... WTF?

BTW, I did get my ringtones working again after updating to 7.4.1, but I have to wonder how long Apple wants to play this game of keeping us from being able to make our own ringtones. iToner is working again, even after the 7.4.1 update, but hopefully Apple won't make moves to prevent it from working in the future. It's a pain in the ass to have to deal with re-syncing ringtones every time. Of course, that's what Apple is trying to achieve.

Don't worry, I'm sure his next post will point out all the products that have the same or better features/interface as the iPhone and various iPod lines. I'm sure he'll also list all those MP3 players with lower prices per gigabyte than the 160 GB iPod classic.

This is also my first ipod, but I thought transering files was supposed to be pretty painless. However when trying to "convert for ipod" on Itunes the shit is taking FOREVER for a 5minute clip

Looking at the Griffin site, they say they have a solution coming. I'm sure that means a new product I'll have to buy, but whatever.

Ok WTF is going on here. I did the whole syncing deal, but it still won't give me the option to transfer my music. I successfuly transfered a couple of Patrice O'neal shorts but music is a no go.

I'm pretty much on the same page. The Internet is completely failing to realize at MacRumors, TUAW, Engadget, etc. that Apple's contracts with the record label include stipulations that if an encryption or intentional product limitation is broken, Apple must fix it within X days or the studio can bow out of the contract without penalty. Apple isn't "out to get you", but in order to even get labels to come to the table, they've had to make certain guaranteed SLA's about FairPlay, and now again about ringtones.

That said, I've got my ringtones working again in 7.4.1, but I had to reimport them all to do it; so now I have 12 ringtones listed, but 6 are dupes. If anyone finds a way to clear out extraneous ringtones from that Ringtone syncer, I'd be extremely grateful. Again, if anyone finds a way to delete ringtones from the ringtone tab, PM me.

Unfortunately, it's not kept in the iTunes Library.xml file, so it must only be stored in the binary iTunes db.

I'm betting that once "Ringtones" is listed in the left hand sidebar of iTunes, you'll probably see your dupes in there and be able to remove them.

Have you tried quitting iTunes, going into your Music folder, finding the Ringtones folder, and manually deleting them? Relaunch iTunes and see what happens?

Well today was my real stress test for the phone...

I was in the city, walking around, taking the subway, in and out of stores, ect.... and I must say it worked great. I used the ipod almost all day and never had an issue. Well ok I had one issue, the earbuds that you get with the phone SUCK!!!! Apple needs to make an in ear headset. But I do like the fact that if you are using the buds, and you want to pause the music you can click the mic once, or if you want to skip to the next song you can click it 2x.

All in All this thing is great. It found wifi networks all over the city... so I was always connected to something.

I must say this is the best phone I have ever had. A+

Why do you guys use to make the ringtones for iToner? AcidPro via Parallels seems a little excessive. :P

I've been using Audacity, which is free, but Superpac is using Garage Band. I'm going to give Garage Band a shot the next time I go to make one. I've only done two so far, and they're working great.

I have. I can verify that the ringtones are only registered in the iTunes Library (binary) database and are not listed in the iTunes Library.xml file. The files themselves have only changed; but it doesn't matter, upon sync you'll get a "file not found" warning. What that means is that no amount of trivial hackery is going to clear out the erroneous ringtones.

I picked up an iphone the day after the price drop. $599 was a little too expensive especially considering no 3G. I had a 4GB Nano that I really liked but traded with my brother for an old 2nd Gen 10GB ipod so that I could use in the car. I bought it mostly to replace my crappy old phone and my old ipod, everything else is bonus (safari, Google maps, mail, Youtube) etc.

Sofar I jailbreaked it and installed my custom theme and custom ring tones, tried a few apps but nothing I wanted to keep (NES emulator sucks). Safari and Google maps was incredibly useful on the go, Youtube app is a little weak as it doesn't have many videos on the site itself.

I also got some protective covering since my boss (who paid $599 first day) showed me his iphone saying it DOES scratch.

The shittiest thing is that Apple (purposely) went with the recessed headphone jack so pretty much any other headphones will not work.

Nope, the shittiest thing is that hideous theme and wallpaper. Combined with that ugly plastic thing, I had to do a triple-take to make sure it was an iPhone and not that Nokia knock-off

For GarageBand, make sure you name the GarageBand save file is the name you want the ringtone to be. I figured it would take the name of the finished file, but it doesn't, the ringers use the name of the GB file for some reason. As a result, I'm also having a problem with duplicate ringtones in my Ringtones tab...

I wanted to say the same thing, but held my tongue. :lol Why do you guys insist on hiacking your iPhones, then putting the worst looking backgrounds and icons on them. Just awful.

The rubber cover was probably the best thing available at the apple store seeing as how there aren't any straps for it, and seeing as though general consensus is that the non-glass portions will get scratched. The metallic silver finish isn't that great but it would be slimmer if I got one of those full body screen guards, but I'm sure the rubber cover is a better shock absorber.

The icon/dash theme is from another set which is simply transparent.. sorry I don't have Halo nekkid chick (nsfw), or some football theme I happen to like Mushihime's art.

I went ahead and just installed Summerboard so I'd have a scrolling application panel and instead of a gawdy background, just chose the iPod Touch bg, since it's remarkably nicer/Leopard-like:

So ive had my phone for almost a week now and everyone i show it to always says something about the weather, "wow its only 73 out?" wtf apple, why cant you update that so it displays the weather?

I just export to an MP3 and drag/drop with iToner...no probs so far.

Fair enough.

But the ones I've seen posted so far, save for Juice's, have all had stylized icons that looked a little too over stylized for my tastes, and then they're thrown on top of overly busy backgrounds making the styles clash even more.

Most i've seen are gaudy, i'll agree.
I still use the original icons over this wallpaper:

is that one of those Incase rubber cases? I got one too. Granted it does uglify the iPhone quite a bit, but the fucking regular finish is slippery as fuck and im too scared about dropping the thing when i pull it out of my pocket (had a couple close calls already). Unfortunately the case has a tendency to start to stretch.

So, I'm in the market for a PDA/smartphone.

How well does the iphone work as a pda? I mean, yeah, great media device, good phone, but as an organizer/scheduler? I haven't heard much about that. Am I better off buying something from HTC?

Works perfectly fine for me. Easy to add things, Calendar is nice, I'm not sure any phone has an advantage over another in this category unless you're looking for integration into Exchange for your scheduling.

Quick question before I buy an iPhone...

If I unlock it so I can use T-Mobile on it, will I still be able to use all the iPhone features? Just wondering...

Nope. Visual Voicemail and YouTube don't work, although there are hacks to get YouTube working.

AT&T >>> T-Mobile regardless

I would rather just accept the odd scratch then put one of those ugly rubber cases on my phone. It defeats the purpose of having such a sleek clean phone to wrap a case around it.

Yeah the rubber case is pretty ugly it will have to do until i get one of these:

I was messing around with Summerboard, seems pretty nice.. it's kinda unfortunate that the application doesn't make use of the full wallpaper without the black portion at the bottom.
I wanted a simple/transparent icon set/theme so that I could easily change wallpapers.
This is how it should look when transparent;

Question about battery life.

Charged it full and purposely tried to kill the battery.

Talked for about 20 minutes, surfed(Edge) for around 3 hours, listened to music for about 2 hours, and it was idle for another 2-3 hours..Plugged it up shortly after getting the 20% warning.

Normal? Below average? Exceptional? Piss Poor? what...
