the iPhone is okay. I can see how if you've never used a smartphone before that you'd think it's an impressive piece of technology but for people who are used to smartphones it's okay and even good for what it does (combining an ipod with a phone). I'm still getting the hang of things but I already miss my old phone. This keyboard is killing me and I have slender fingers :( argh! And what's up with wifi not having priority over edge? 3g iPhone would've been awesome. One more reason to hate verizon for not jumping on it.

As a media device, it's unmatched by any other smartphone, but then again, most of them are more business oriented to begin with.

The keyboard is a hit or miss thing I guess, as I have no problems with it at all. Took a little bit to get use to, but now I'm fine with it. Works great, and I'm quite fast typing on it. And I have large hands.

WiFi does not have priority over EDGE. At least not on my phone. Not sure why you're having issues with that, but mine automatically joins WiFi networks when it can, and prompts me to join when I'm on EDGE and it finds new networks. This an issue with your phone, but not the iPhone in general.

Why does lack of 3G make you hate Verizon more? The fact that it doesn't have 3G has nothing to do with the carrier. It was a conscious choice, as AT&T has a fine 3G network. The trade-off was made to save battery life, and for me, it's fine. EDGE works far faster than I was ever lead to believe and is rarely an issue for me. A 3G phone would be sucking the battery life out the iPhone.

I bought one of the Power Support films at the Apple store the other day, not the Crystal Film, but the Anti-Glare film, and I love it. It's done a few things.

1) It's actually made it easier to type with the on-screen keyboard, since there's a more textured feel to the screen now - maybe my fingers just aren't slipping as much now because of that - but it doesn't decreases the touch sensitivity of the screen at all.

2) It definitely cuts down on finger prints and oils that are visible on the screen, which keeps the phone just looking a lot cleaner throughout the day.

I also don't have problems with WiFi taking priority over 3G. So long as WiFi is on it always prompts me asking if I want to join a network it finds as I move around (which is kind of funny if I'm using it in a car - as a passenger, obviously not when I'm driving :lol ). You have to make sure the WiFi is actually on though. I actually turn it off when I'm sitting at work because there's no way I'm getting on any networks there, so it just drains the battery faster for no reason to have it on.

Heh, my home network is much better than all the hotspots around my city. I spoke too soon on the wifi connection issues I think.

I didn't know any gsm carriers had 3g widely available. Anyway, I hate verizon because the iPhone would have been a better product on their network. As I recall apple approached them with the iphone first. At&t's service is horrible, sry2say. And I don't get why battery life would be an issue when the iPhone has wifi, which also drains the battery and isn't as easily accessible when you are out of the house. The iphones best features require wifi and between wifi and 3g i'd rather have 3g. I couldn't even connect to the iTunes store on edge. And don't get me wrong, the phone is really nice and im slowly warming up to it as i use it more but I think it could still be better.

I'm typing up my posts itt on my iPhone if you hadn't noticed the punctuation errors already :)

It is pretty much true that the phone would be tons better on Verizon, but other than that I think it's about the perfect phone to date as far as just refining and making usable all the features of other phones in one package. It's just so much more user-friendly than anything else it's unreal. If they open up third-party apps, I won't really have jackshit to complain about. Maybe the fact that there's not a real keyboard, but that's it.

P.S. Everywhere I work and go to class has wifi so 3G is a non-issue for me and I know nothing about it, though.

This is by design, not an error. I'm also rather certain it was a trade-off between Apple and AT&T in order to get the unlimited data plan for the iPhone. AT&T didn't want to have people all on their network downloading a ton of songs via their phone, so the iTunes store was locked out of being used on EDGE.

Whether or not the iPhone would be better on Verizon is a matter of debate. I switched from Verizon to AT&T when I got the iPhone and honestly have not noticed a difference in coverage at all, and I've had fewer dropped calls on AT&T as well. Don't get mw rong, Verizon has a great network, but in my area, and several areas I've traveled to over the past few months, I've had zero issues with the AT&T network and have seen little difference between it and Verizon.

On the other hand, Verizon does have a tendency to force their own OS and Apps on to their phones, and they're very good at disabling features as well. The reason the iPhone isn't on Verizon could have been as much an Apple thing as it was a choice by Verizon.

Verizon forces their god-awful Verizon OS on any non-smartphone they lay their hands on for their network. It's one reason I'm having so much fun with the iPhone after a few years on Verizon, something that has a new look and feel.

I travel between Central Virginia and the Hampton Roads area, and 3G is pretty much non-existent here at this point, so it makes no difference to me right now. The only difference I've noticed between moving from Verizon and ATT is that signal inside buildings is a little flakier on ATT than it was on Verizon, but that would have more to do with the spectrum ATT has to use more than anything else.

Just noticed an issue--many times when I call someone, they pick up and I can only hear myself. The other person can hear me fine, but the only way to hear them is to hang up and call again.

Anyone have this happen? I think I'll call support.

EDIT: BTW--I went to 1.1.1 hoping this would fix the issue and it hasn't.

Hey iPhone guys, just got an email from my dad about this site:

http://www.puremobile.com/Apple/Apple-iPhone-Black-GSM-Phone/

claiming to sell unlocked 8GBs. He wants me to buy it for him and send it to Singapore. Are they scammers? Will he have trouble putting an Asian telco's SIM card in and using it?

Sorry for noobness!

The phone HAS been unlocked, so they may well be selling them, just don't plan on updating the phone with future software, as Apple is doing everything possible to kill of the hacked/unlocked phones.

Buyer beware imho.

If I follow the instructions on the iPhone dev group's wiki, will I be okay just doing it myself? It seems ~ as hard/easy as DGing a PSP.

Has anyone figured out a work around for the ringtones yet? I'm dying to put the radio version of "Still Alive" on there and everything I have been running into says it's not working with 1.1.1 yet. So I thought I'd check with you guys and gals...

iToner is suppose to be working again, but not sure if they've posted the update yet. Probably this week.

This would be awesome but I still can't bring myself to pay $15 for a piece of software that's going to be broken for a month every time Apple updates the iPhone.

I totally agree. For now, I've given up on free ringtones. I'll wait to see if things settle down in the future. I became annoyed with having to reload my ringtones all the time, which is of course what Apple was hoping for, I'm sure.

Apple so pisses me off. On what is essentially an Ipod I'm not allowed to pick a song (or edit it) I put on the device to use as a fucking ringtone unless I bought it from them. On a device that runs a version of Mac OS I'm not allowed to bring in any jpeg to set as my background. So many weird little decision like this. So stupid.

To be fair, if most major US carriers were able to prevent you from doing this, they would. As such, the last couple phones I had made no mention in their instruction manual of how to do it even though you could find out easily enough on the Internet. Instead, they push you to use the ringtones they sell.

Actually I have a Halo 3 background on my phone right now -- it's "any ol' JPEG," though I did put it in an iPhoto album that syncs to the phone.

Yeah, but they didn't f'ing actively try to stop you from doing the workarounds.

I agree that it pissed me off to. A device designed to be used for music and they make this decision and actively go out of their way to close loop holes. Hell, I have songs that I've ripped from my own CD's that are listed in the iTunes Music Store as being able to be made into a ringtone, and I still can't do it with one I legitimately own. Instead, I have to buy the song AGAIN, and then pay 99 cents to have it made into a ringtone for me. Pretty lame.

That said, there are plenty of other phones out there that don't allow you to use your own MP3's as ringtones. However, there aren't many other smartphones that don't allow you to do it.

Yeah, it's the fact that the ability is clearly there and the people who will make custom ringtones are in a minority, yet they go after them like villains, anyway, for a feature that is very much standard in smartphones. They want to have 100% control (and, in this case, it's a money issue, so I have far less sympathy for Apple's reasoning) and are hurting the potential of the iPhone in the process. :\

I know very little about the cell phone market so you are probably right however it strikes me as the sort of short-term thinking that for example would mean you could only play music you purchased off Itunes on your ipod which makes no sense.

Explain the process for this now so I can do it. Where do I drag the jpeg on itunes?

If you're on a Mac, jus tell it to sync photos from you iPhoto Library. I actually made a "roll" in iPhoto called "iPhone" and just put all the images I want synced, including the one I use for my background, in there.

On Windows, I believe it looks in your "My Photos" folder. I'm guessing you can create a folder that does the same thing I noted above.

However, the image I set as my custom "background" (the Original Star Wars Poster) only shows up at the Unlock screen. It's not like it appears on the desktop behind all the icons or anything. That can only be done with some of the hacks out there.

Speaking of ringtones, why in God's name does the phone only ring for like 24 seconds? Is there a way to fix that? I hate it when I can't find the thing and 30 seconds later it's already gone to voicemail. And if there isn't a way to fix that, why is that?

Pretty much every phone I've owned has been like that. Personally, it annoys the fuck out of me when someone's phone goes on and on and on. My home phone goes to voicemail after 4 rings, so it's about the same.

Right, but if I'm at home by myself, it annoys the shit out of me knowing that it's a 25-second countdown to find my phone.

I guess that's the other thing. I know where mine is at at all times. I've never had this issue. To each his own I suppose.

Ok so my phone is 3 yrs old and it sucks. I've basically decided that I want an iPhone despite its many shortcomings. My question is, if I buy the phone and activate it thru itunes, do I have to pay any setup fees or anything like that? I guess my real question is what are the hidden costs associated with the recurring charges?

Nothing that you wouldn't find on any other phone with a similar data plan and on other carriers. In short, no. Just the typical fees, plus the taxes, etc.

Will itunes tell you what the fees cost? I guess since its a different way of activating a phone I want to make sure I don't sign up for one thing via. itunes and get a bill from AT&T that says something completely different.

Finally got a jailbroken 1.1.1 running on my iPhone, and I love it. The new additions of 1.1.1 are pretty cool, and I like the paging style of the new SummerBoard better than the scrolling of the 1.0.2 SummerBoard :)

Ahhh they need to release a fail-safe, stupid-man download version. :)

iTunes lets you select from the $59.99, $79.99, and $99.99 versions. I don't remember it actually telling you what your bill will be when it arrives, but of course you have any taxes added (which will vary depending on where you are at), and the "access charges" and so on that come along with any cell phone bill. I have the $59.99 plan, and my bill is in the neighborhood of $71 a month.

There isn't anything different with the iPhone that you wouldn't have on any other phone with a data plan. It's just a straight forward, basic billing. There isn't an "iPhone Tax" or anything that causes it to be higher.

I do believe on your first bill you'll get a $35 activation fee or something of that nature. Can't remember for sure, and that's pretty standard if you're creating a new account with someone as well.

What exactly are you worried about?

Ah, that sounds about right then. I dunno, like I said I've never activated a phone via the internet before so I wasn't sure if there was some hidden catch. I'm used to the activation fees and little access charges here and there so thats cool. Plus I'm not the biggest fan of AT&T but being able to activate my phone from the comfort of my own home seems like a pretty cool idea. Thanks for the info

It actually is pretty cool and very painless. I ported a number over from Verizon and the whole thing took maybe 10 minutes tops, plus an hour or so of waiting for my Verizon number to be ported over.

During the time while you wait for you old number, you can make calls, you just can't receive them on your iPhone yet. You'll get a text saying that the number is ported and you're all done.

Ok so I am running into my first problem. Safari keeps booting me off and takes me back to the iPhone home screen. Also when I am on safari using jive talk I can't advance songs without it booting me. This is all happening when I am on edge. Any ideas?

When it's booting you that means the app is crashing. Generally it's something on the website that causes the crashes. For instance, GAF works great most of the time, but try to load up a thread with a lot of images in it, and you can easily crash the browser.

As for the accessing the iPod controls, are you using the home button to overlay the controls in all apps? And it's still causing it to crash? How about just using the included headphones and clicking the little built in clicker to advance songs?

Holy crap this thing is so cool, hahaha.

Gotta get a prepaid SIM card from T-mobile or something for "testing" now.

I wonder if I can sucker my Dad into letting me keep it till they unlock 1.1.1 :lol

Yeah, like SummerBoard has to be manually installed for 1.1.1, can't use Installer.app for it. It's not very hard though, the README file is fairly straightforward.

Hmm...odd. Have you tried a re-boot? And if that doesn't do it a restore? I suppose there could be a short in your headphones, but it's kind of unlikely. Maybe try a different pair of headphones on the off chance though.

looks like the itoner crew is having a tough time w/ the 1.1.1 update. :lol glad i didn't buy into their software. i'm surprised at how happy i am w/ the stock iphone. would love the hacks, but it looks like apple is going to make it tough for everyone including 3rd party developers.

http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/itoner/

We're obviously not happy that iToner was broken with the iPhone OS 1.1.1 update. Here's the situation. The iPhone is a bit like your Mac, in that there are system areas of the iPhone, and there are user areas of the iPhone. One might think of the user area of the iPhone as similar to your Home on your Mac; all of your photos, music, etc. are stored in this user area of the phone.

iToner was written with compatibility in mind, and places ringtones in the user area of the phone; it does not put *any* code on the phone at all. This is why when Apple updated from iPhone OS 1.0.0 -> 1.0.1 your iToner ringtones continued to work. This is again why when Apple updated from iPhone OS 1.0.1 -> 1.0.2 your iToner ringtones continued to work. Other methods of putting ringtones on your iPhone put them in the system area of the the phone, and thus were wiped out when Apple released an iPhone OS update. So with this knowledge in mind, it is why we made the statement that iToner would continue to work with iPhone OS updates.

Then along came iTunes 7.4.x, which activated the ringtone feature of the iTunes Music Store. Apple was a bit overzealous in their iTunes code, and just flat-lined any ringtones that were on your iPhone that were not placed there by iTunes.

We quickly remedied the situation with iToner 1.0.1, and all was well. That is, until the iPhone OS 1.1.1 came out. Now it looks like they are actively not just shutting down hacks, applications, etc. on the iPhone, but they are also going out of their way to ensure that no ringtones other than the ones purchased from the iTunes Music Store work on the iPhone.

I'm not going to comment of my personal position on Apple's stance here except to say that I think it's slightly misguided to disallow people to use whatever they want for a ringtone. That said, it's our job to make iToner continue to function as a product... and we think we're going to be able to do just that. Very shortly we will be beta testing iToner 1.0.3 which we believe will bring iPhone OS 1.1.1 compatibility to iToner.

It's been a rough ride... but we're trying to do right by our customers and get this product working again, despite the curves thrown at us by Apple. Thank you for your patience, and your loyalty!
