Same here. I kept my edited ringtones too. I haven't seen 1.1.2 come through yet though.

So what would one need to encode in m4a? Most of my iTunes library is encoded in VBR mp3's, so is there a good, easy, free mac audio editor to use to do this (and then encode in m4a?)?

I don't believe you need to do anything. Just change the file extension. That's what I did the first time.

Mp3?

Do this:

1. Select your iTunes-setting-import-format to AAC. Confirm the setting that the library is set to copy files when imported.
2. Right click the song you want as a ringtone and select "Convert to AAC"
3. Copy the m4a file with an audio editor a la SoundStudio
4. Shrink it down to 30 seconds, save it.
5. Change the extension of the song to .m4r and double-click it.

It *should* appear in the ringtones list.

So basically use iTunes to convert it. I tunes won't overwrite the original mp3 file when I do that will it?

Not really any point in doing any of this until apple decides to push 1.1.2 over iTunes. Of course the cynical side of me tells me that hasn't happened yet because they realized they didn't disable custom ringtones in the firmware and they're "fixing" it.

The firmware is out everywhere but in the U.S. as far as I can tell.

Yeah. I'm waiting until the official nerfed version is released.

Actually, the only feature I wish had come along for the ride was a Japanese IME. I'm getting sick of my Japanese friends' e-mails' being read-only.

:lol wow that was fast... apple should just give up

They actually broke it last week several hours after the 1.1.2 release showed up. To be honest, Apple isn't really TRYING to keep it locked down as much as they could and all the #iphone folks certainly know that.

I'm willing to bet the official SDK is going to be for software distributed through iTunes and signed by Apple.

The hackers are still going to be hacking.

I wish I could comment on this beyond saying "no- unless something drastically changes", but I can't.

My path to the dark side is now complete.

First I bought an iPod, then an iPhone, now I have a Macbook. Gateway drug indeed.

Considering where my seats are, not likely. :lol

That's how Apple gets you. With quality products, a great interface, and lots of awesome stuff packed inside. The MacBooks rock. I love mine.

Firmware 1.1.2 is out in the U.S. I'm going to go install it and give the custom ringtones thing a go.

Update: Firmware installed and working properly. Ringtones are working great as well. :D

Wow. Ringtones couldn't be easier. Don't see why/how anyone would pay for iToner now. This definitely marks a departure from their previous policy.

OK, so my workflow for making ringtones needs some serious tweaking.

I downloaded Audacity - which I'd used on the PC side before and thought it would be fine here as well, but it must not like my vbr mp3s, because when I import a song from my iTunes library it slows it down by 100%, so I have to up the tempo by 100%.

Then I do my trimming and save it as a wav. I open the wav in iTunes and convert to AAC, then "find in finder", delete it from the library but keep the file, move the file to documents, delete the original .wav, change the extension of the .m4a to .m4r, and then double-click to add it back into the library as a ringtone. Bleh, I need something more automated. I guess I could learn Automator, haha. Just too many steps.

It looks like January 18th might be the official release date of the iPhone in Canada, with rogers of course...

Thank god custom ringtones are back. Something tells me it's not a glitch. Somebody had to deliberately re-enable them.

I was kind of thinking the same thing, considering the efforts that went into stopping them before.

Those of you who edit your own ringtones, can you give me some info?

What's a good dB level to normalize our custom ringtones to so that they're about even (maybe a tad louder) than the built-in ringtones? I hate having a built-in ringtone on one person and have the ringer adjusted for its level and then having one of the custom ringtones on and nearly blow the speaker out of the iPhone.

Wait....Wait

Is it Confirmed now that ringtones are back in Firmware 1.1.2, using the Itone or just editing an ACC file?

Yup. Confirmed as I said in my post above. I've got the ones I made originally back on the phone and working fine. They even show up in their own list as per the 1.1.2 update.

Hotness, Now I need to find that post on how to make custom ring tones and bump up the volume on the ringer and 1 of my 2 complaints will be solved.

Thanks

What exactly does the 1.1.2 firmware do aside from allowing for custom ringtones?

Adds multiple language support, a few minor bug fixes and some tweaks. Mostly small stuff. For instance, there is now a battery life icon in iTunes when docked now and custom ringtones are separated into their own list when you look at your ringtones.

Above the (ear) speaker, what are those (circle and oval)? A light of some sort?

Proximity and light sensors?

I know one is the light sensor--if you cover it and open up your phone, the screen is significantly dimmer.

:lol And here I've been rubbing on those everyday thinking they were air bubbles still stuck under my crystal film!

Restore fixed my buddy's phone right up. Amazing how iTunes stores all the info., so it's only a matter of waiting 20 minutes for everything to sync up again.

:lol You too?

I've been in the process of moving and had no PC setup at home for a few weeks, so I've been syncing w/ my work PC. Now that things are back in order and my home PC is back up and running...

Is there any way to copy my current list of songs so that I can easily restore the music (don't care about videos ATM) that's on there now? There has to be something easier than taking a screenshot and manually re-adding all the tracks manually.

Yeah. The restore option and iTunes having everything synced is pretty nice for a "Just In Case" scenario.

Question: is there any update on MS Exchange functionality being incorporated?

We have a user where I work who is bitching to high heaven because his free new iPhone won't work with our Exchange server. I know there are some work arounds but our sys admin is against them, plus I don't think they include his calendar.

Guys, Kung-Fu recommended for me to use the APP called "Auduacity" to edit my music files into ringtones. The problem is that I really don't know how to use it. I open up a track and when I hit play it sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks on speed. I don't think that it's playing the track insanely fast but that it's just loading up less than a seconds worth of it. I attempted to go thru the help file but it really wasn't a tutorial.

Any advice?

^

It's super easy. Hardest part is pointing to the lameenc.dll...which isn't hard at all.

Just drag over an mp3 to the app, select the part you want to chop off and hit delete. Then save as .wav or whatever. I Never had any issues with it playing the song all fast like that.

The Federal Government says 'No iPhone supprt...period'. So I just use Outlook Web Access.

Is this why selecting iTunes to sync w/ Outlook result in it not doing a damn thing?

I posted about Audacity a few posts earlier. In my case it was playing the files very slowly, but it was importing the whole file. I think it's because it has issues importing my VBR mp3 files.

In any case, if you're on a Mac the easiest thing is probably just to import your music file into Garageband and edit it that way. Quick and painless and one less app to have in your applications folder. Has been working fine for me since I got tired of having to readjust the speed of everything I imported into Audacity.
