True. I have to keep 3G and WiFi off all day and i still barely get a day out of the battery.

wah? how?! maybe you're a heavy user? if i talk about 45 minutes a day on my phone, and still leave it on, i can get over 2 straight days off the battery.

I'm not saying they're "doing it wrong", I'm saying that expecting it to run at peak efficiency when there's that many apps in there? It's still kind of lame, I won't deny it, but it would be unreasonable to expect perfection. For as awesome as the iPhone is, it's still NOT a computer replacement, and shouldn't be demanded to operate at the same level as one.
Once again, as well, just because you CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean that it's intended to be used in that fashion. Just because Apple has 150 slots for apps doesn't mean necessarily that filling the majority of them is "intended use".

Peak efficiency? It's not like applications on a PC or a phone are doing anything other than taking up space after you install them.

If you have more than 70 apps installed and sync after 2.0.2, apparently none will ever not never launch at all and OH THX you won't have any songs or movies or tv shows anymore.

Peak efficiency. What bullshit.

People are sooooo defensive about this damn phone. I have one and love it, but I know it isn't perfect. The criticism is relevant--if the phone has the space for the apps, then the mere act of having something installed shouldn't burden it; if that is the case, then they need to set a lock. There are a hell of a lot more apps on the store than 100 and there is more than enough space for installing 100+, some people will take advantage of that.

Apparently!

-------------------------------

By the way, I unchecked about half the apps in iTunes and... lo-and-behold... the iPhone works again!

Absolutely pathetic. This phone is for most intents my best friend throughout the day and I use it for nearly everything, but the daily lock-ups, restarts, and other bugs since 2.0's release have been unduly harsh.

I'm not a heavy talker at all.

I'm on the internet all day. I literally check my feed reader every half hour.

It's really true.

I don't even know how other companies can release their phones with their touch interface. It's so terrible. The Voyager is laughable and I was playing with the Samsung Glide the other day and it's touch controls are terrible.

How shitty must you feel when you sit on a cell phone team for a year creating this touch product, and realize you can't even get close to what Apple offers.

I cannot believe I agree with a guy with a halo avatar but yea you are right. I tried my co-worker's instint and well Apple just set the bar too high for some companies.

even Phonedog agrees.

Better to just be reasonable than being bi-polar and ready to burn Steve Jobs' house down at every open sign that something's wrong, even if it's software-related and entirely correctable, and then still say it's the best there's been in the next breath.

But whatever, I'm such a ghost here.

A phone is a mission critical device. I had 10 work calls go to voicemail because my iPhone was spazzing out. It can be simultaneously the best device in the world and unacceptable when it falls on its face.

I'm sure there's better ones out there, but thought that since we're on a gaming forum (technically), I might as well share what I made with the rest of you.

It's a ringtone of the Super Mario Bros. Underworld music, complete with the "Hurry Up" tone near the 30 second mark to let you know you're running out of time to answer the call, and the death noise at the very end.

Hate to bump this, but it doesn't work properly =( It plays and all, but my iPhone goes to voice mail well before it ever comes close to finishing. Does anyone know the realistic length of how long a ring will play before it hits voice mail?

It varies by carrier and by region, I think, which is why they are 40 seconds max and why I made the tone that long. I'm actually calling my carrier to ask them if they can extend the time my phone rings, because right now, my phone only rings for about 15 seconds max, and when I'm at work, that's not enough time for me to answer. :(

TipTap, a tip calculator is currently free on the App Store. All future updates will be free even if you get it during the promotion period they say. It's a pretty nice interface and the next version will support tax support (so I assume tip on tax or without tax). It's a handy thing to have around as calculating tip and splitting the bill is something that always seems to take ages when I go out for dinner.

Sorry to ask this, but seeing as we are talking about ringtones I might as well.

How do I make workable m4r files that can be used as ringtones on a PC? I have tried google, and the results are a mess of stuff that does not really help at all.

I have a few tones that friends made, but I cant find out how to do it myself :(

Thanks... I think I just found an easier rename extension workaround too. This looks better though.

edit... file extension thing did not work BTW
You can also use iTunes to convert it.
Go into your iTunes preferences, and make sure you are using the AAC encoder. You can double-check this by going to “Advanced”, then “Importing”. Now, browse to the song you want to use to create your ringtone. Right click on the file, and choose “Get Info”, then “Options”. Under the Options tab, select te start time and stop time, to create a 30 second clip. Once your 30 second clip is selected, right-click the song and choose “Convert Selection to AAC” and change the file extension to "m4r".

Kevin Rose thinks he knows Apple's plans for next month.

Digg.com's Kevin Rose has posted a new blog entry claiming to have knowledge of upcoming iPod updates with a significant number of details:

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.

Hey, thanks Firestorm, worked pretty well today at lunch. Was a bit tricky to find in the store though (and surprised how many tip calculators there were...)

That looks like poo poo.
The Nano atm is perfect, imo.
Nano was perfect before you mean. The current chubby design is ugly. Meh, was never really a fan of iPods anyway.

I went to the Apple Store today since they finally got those screen protectors in stock. Holy crap. It's like walking into a branding machine. It's surreal. It's like being blasted on all sides by an Apple lifestyle. Kind of creepy. Lots of employees. Apple's budget is through the roof.

Ugh, more iPods... they couldn't have just made an iPhone nano and do away with the iPod nano line altogether? Seriously, it's the most superfluous nonsense I have ever seen, especially now that Apple could theoretically just introduce a nice convergence device at cheaper production cost and sweep the cell phone market again to boot by offering it with carriers as a pay-as-you-go or something.
Ah well... guess you can't fault Apple for wanting to hang onto its cash-cow dinosaur.

I just applied the Anti-Glare protector. Messed up my first and used my second which turned out perfect. It's pretty awesome. I don't see the issue with the image colours or whatever. They still look awesome. Hardly took a hit at all. If I hadn't heard about it, I probably wouldn't have even noticed. I was finally able to take that plastic thing that came on it off (didn't want to take it off until I could apply this one). Now I won't feel like an idiot talking into a phone with the plastic wrap on top of the mouthpiece and earpiece.

Was there much stock left? I've been looking for it this week, didn't think to check the store tonight. :/

Yeah they seemed to have a lot. They just got it in today. I phoned yesterday and there was nothing but the girl on the phone said to phone again today. I did so I went down.

Anyone have the Exposure app? (Free version)

Since the beginning of this week (When I updated to 2.0.2) I get an error message that this app can't be loaded when syncing.

QUESTION

If I deactivate my iPhone service does it become an iPod Touch or is it totally useless?

It has 1.1.3 and is jailbroken.

Thanks guys!

Nah, Apple lately has been doing this September iPod update thing for the last few years. Expect iPhone revisions next year.

Hey guys, my friend just bought the new 2nd generation ipod, and he's upset about something.

His Monster FM transmitter, which he uses to play and charge his regular iPod, does not charge his iPhone.

What should he do?

Yeah I'm in the same boat. Anyone have any iphone car charger recommendations, ideally one that holds the phone up?

people are starting to notice the lameness of the intelligent keyboard

try typing gabi in the keyboard from start to finish without deleting any letters to correct WHILE starting with a capital G

try your hardest to hit that i ;)

No.
I'm relatively foreign to Apple products. Last serious engagement I had with one of their products was an Apple IIg some 18 years ago. :( I've purposely ignored this iPod craze. But the phone is tits, so I'll give 'em my money this time. PEACE.

And what purpose, pray-tell, does the non-existent word "gabi" serve? Y'know, just asking. I mean, at least they're not using it to prevent me from swearing... after a few months, the phone relented and realized that, NO, I WASN'T trying to type the word "duck". Of course, I feel for the next person who wants to have a text message conversation about water fowl.

hmm interesting.. it's possible to hit the 'i' but yeah you're more likely to get an o or u than an i unless you're really precise. Still, I think that this is better than the alternative - typing on a touch screen with your finger really is an impressive thing, and the fact that it's somewhat useable is a great achievement.

so what if you're trying to type the word gabion? if i worked in marine construction i'd probably lose my mind

But once you've done it though, the phone will remember you use that word and it will be easy to type from then on.

When my friends and I talk we do a lot of stupid spelling of words just to be funny. I found it really awesome when I on purpose spelled a word wrong, it corrected it, then I backspaced and typed it again and it didn't correct it. The next time I went and typed it I hit a wrong key, and it auto corrected it to the correct wrongly spelled word. It just knew I use that word now. I think it's awesome.

but you don't understand, the word will be added to the dictionary, but it'll STILL force the typo no matter what

this is forcing a typo when you clearly aren't making one, instead of correcting after the fact

do you understand?

How weird! Why won't it select the "I"?
Even if you hold down your finger to move over the I, it still jumps over it.

That's gotta be a bug right?

I love the keyboard otherwise, I'm pretty fast with it.

To the above poster: no, don't think it's a bug, the phone's lexicon just knows there's only about 3 words in the whole English language, including colloquialisms, that start with "gabi", so it makes the finger correction on your behalf and will correct its correction during spell-check based on your usual input into its lexicon.

DopeyFish said:

You might forgive Apple for catering to the 99.8% of the population who don't work marine construction then by not catering to the ONE word in our whole language that starts with "gabi" or the words of the gabion derivative. Or unless you were British and wanted to use the plural for "gaby".

Yeah, we do, you're making a big deal out of something you would never encounter in practical use unless you were in the marine construction business, and I can guarantee you most of those guys wouldn't care, so long as the spell-check got it right after you typed it. There's just better things to care about.

yeah, it's like that on every phone. calm down.

i wish i could tweak the dictionary on my phone's t9, but it seems to be as user-unfriendly as possible.

Mine selects the "I" just tried it a few moments ago.

edit: i think when you press space the iphone tries and do a correction of the word they think you are trying to type.

What?? I do not understand this at all.

Is this supposed to be hard to do or something? I can hammer out 40-50 WPM e-mails on this thing, and "Gabi" is no harder than any other string. I typed it in without any odd thing happening at all.

Seriously, it's like this isn't a gaming forum. Am I the only one with advanced finger coordination and dexterity?

Edit: Ahhh, if you're a lame press-and-holder it doesn't let you pick it. Meh.

it seems like the more days I have this phone, the worse Safari is working. It loads less and less, especially when using 3G.

I still love the phone, but a fix would be obviously appreciated when it's available.

Go to prefs, clear its cache. Then close all of its windows, then open Safari.

Once Safari is open, hold down the home button for ten seconds and force-quit it, this seems to loosen it up a bit.
