ARGH, iPhone troubles..... It seems my internet isn't working on the celluar network. On Wi-fi it works great but when I go online under my provider it loads, and then stops. I cleared the cache, history and cookies and still does not work. I have to restart the whole phone just to get it to work.

Does anyone have this problem?
tmoblie? Wouldn't work for me all day yesterday. Same message. They told me there was an outage and gave me 100 extra minutes.

There was also an upgrade to the tzones hack late last night which I installed. Works fine now. Using it to post this. :)

This happened to pretty much all of the Rogers/ Fido network last night across Canada. from midnight to 8 AM EST.

That's a pretty big outage.

Oh, a note about battery life. I've been dealig with horribly bad battery life for about a month so I did some tests.

It's been said before but my own tests now bear it out. turning off push mail for an exchange account can add around 20 to 30% battery life.

I recently changed my exchange mail from push to fetch (every 60 minutes) and my battery life at the end of my day is around 40% instead of 15-20% as it had been yesterday (and for most of the last month). I tried to mimic the same usage for the 2 days (about 60 min of youtube streaming, 5 hours music, 20 minutes within Mail, additional 45-60 minutes browsing over 3G.)

changing other items like wi-fi on/off over the past week didn't have a noticeable effect. but the push setting changed a lot. The weird thing is yesterday I received very few emails over exchange yet toggling the push feature off affected my battery life a ton.

I wonder if it's another OS bug. Push shouldn't drain battery if no (or little) mail is being sent to the device from the account...

I get a day and a half of use out of my iPhone 3G. Is that about in line with what everyone else is getting?

A day of heavy usage would be 40-60 minutes on the phone, an hour or two online, and sending and receiving a few dozen emails. I don't usually listen to much music or watch many movies on the phone. At the end of the day I will be left with at least 20% battery. That is acceptable to me.

With light usage (this means 20 minutes on the phone, 30 minutes of internet, and maybe 20 emails), I can almost get to the end of the second day, but the phone will start to die around 8pm.

This is part truth, but here's the most precise answer... Apple does free replacements if the device is still within its one-year warranty. As batteries are deemed "consumable parts" by Apple, they won't swap them out of warranty without it being caused by a known mistake on their part or a problem with the battery as it was manufactured (see: battery recall on batteries with lithium-ion cells made by Sony that were over-heating).

That falls in line with my understanding. Thanks for giving a more precise response.

Yeah. The cs rep said it was everything west of the mississippi river.

Did they give you any grief about it?

BTW, how do I disable the backing up of my phone whenever I sync. I just want to sync a few podcasts, but it backs up my phone before it syncs and that takes a really long time, which means each sync is more than 10 minutes long.

The more you back it up the shorter the back ups will be. Just let the sync do it's things.

any of you having problems with the phone lagging like hell, safari crashing, laggy sms/keyboard? i restored it and have no 3rd party apps, and its still happening.

i'd love you long time

That, an windows live messenger app that runs in the background (I think beejive will fix this need soon), and hotmail being compatible with the iPhone mail thing are my 3 most wanted features. Oh, and somehow being able to use ckholer's GAF web app interface for every forum like a skin or something.

No grief at all

For those on Rogers, new info:
- $30 for 6GB is extended until September 30th
- $100 overage limit for data charges, after that you aren't charged
- lots of voice plan promotions

new data plans if you don't want to sign for 3 years:
$15 for 2MB
$25 for 500MB
$30 for 1GB
$60 for 3GB
$80 for 8GB

So does anybody know what AT&T's long-term strategy for 3G penetration is? I was just thinking about how with the iPhone you're basically paying $10 a month for a service that, at least in my case, might be usable in hotels when I'm staying in LA once or twice a year.

So, I just got my Roegers bill today. I bought a 2G iPhone last month, no contract, no data plan. I had it for a couple days before realizing I had to install something to completely disable data with the 2.0 firmware.

I got charged $105 for 2.09 MB. 2 MB. I'm calling them tomorrow and telling them to reverse the charge, or they can fuck themselves.

2 MB. really?... REALLY?

If they made that 15 dollar plan good for 100 or 200 MB, then maybe they would have something viable for light net users... but 2 MB. ugh. why even offer that plan? I suppose it's just there to position the 500 MB plan as something decent.

Is there any way to watch justin.tv on an iphone?

No. Justin.tv uses Flash Video as does most of the Internet. Apple is being a real asshole about getting Flash in any form on the iPhone in order to protect Quicktime and Fair Play (I know this for absolute certain). So unless Justin.tv starts streaming quicktime, you won't be watching it.

And its all bullshit anyways. If you don't have a data plan, they should simply drop your data packets or not allow you to establish a data connection from the phone. Its not like they don't know that your phone is talking to an EDGE connection,

Yeah, I got hit with a $128 charge for 2.5 megs. I know it's my fault but it's fucking painful to pay that on principle alone.

Of course they aren't giving you grief, they're still getting your money and didn't lose a customer to AT&T because you wanted an iPhone, they're probably wishing you could show ALL their customers who want iPhones how you got yours.

MobileChat, once its bugs are fixed and the 2.1 hits, will fill that need for MSN adequately.

And until Apple decides otherwise it's won't even be possible on a jailbroken iPhone? Damn, no flash and no adblock; it'll be a very weird browsing experience...

Ouch. For blocking data, if you don't trust Rogers/Fido (the iPhone also uses a new APN which Rogers/Fido reps didn't know how to block at launch), access this through WiFi and use the Fake APN: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/

Yeah but it's been so buggy for so long that I think I'll just go with JiveTalk or whatever. I hear they have the best Messenger application on the Blackberries.

Thats bad. Luckily I do not live in Canada.

Anyone in Canada having issues with the Rogers 3G network at the moment? My iPhone seems to be staying at EDGE in an area where I usually get 4/5 bars of 3G. And yes, I have 3G on in the preferences.

That's lame. :\

It's one of those things that has always annoyed me and was hoping would get fixed on future updates.

Have there been any rumors about this getting out of AT&T exclusivity any time soon? The plans that they force you into are terrible. I really want the iPhone, but it's just such an expensive month to month option when compared to other smart phones with other carriers like Sprint or T-Mobile. I'm on Sprint now, and I could have a great phone for much cheaper month to month.

FRUSTRATING!

That's why I said just keep typing an ignore it. You don't need to take it's suggestions. Although I do agree that it should be an option to turn it off if you'd like.

Rumor has it that exclusivity goes through 2010. Not coming to any other carrier for awhile yet.

If I bring an unlocked iPhone to a T-Mobile store, can they activate it for me? How would I get one going on T-Mobile? I might be able to get a great deal on an unlocked one here locally.

Also, if I have issues with an unlocked phone, will Apple even help?

Those rates are great for now. I do not doubt that if and when the iphone is available to other carriers, those other carriers will definitely charge more for their plans especially internet packages.

Depends on the T-mobile rep, but it isn't hard to activate. You should already have a T-mobile sim card so once you unlock the iphone just put the sim card in the slot and done.

I doubt Apple will help people with their unlocked iphones.

Ok. So I finally figured out a workaround for Hotmail although it's not ideal. If you sign up with Windows Live Mobile, you can forward your Hotmail to any account including GMail. So you forward it to GMail, enable IMAP and follow the instructions to get it onto your iPhone for the mail app. Meh, it'll have to do for now until Microsoft stops being dicks. There was an article in September 2007 saying how they were gonna do POP for all Hotmail accounts including free accounts within 12 months. Well... moment of truth.

Isn't Sprint CDMA? For T-Mobile, if it's unlocked, all ya gotta do is put in a SIM card right?

No, warranty coverage on iPhones are only valid if it is currently used in conjunction with an AT&T service plan. So if it breaks or something's wrong... they'll tell you outright that they can't help you. It's a bit of a gamble, but that's the deal.

Sprint is CDMA (They are incredibly similar to Telus, for canadians who wonder), so yeah, sorry Sprint users, you're screwed until Apple can engineer a new phone for you. I don't think they are rushing to the table on that one.

What do you mean ignore it? If I press space it automatically replaces the word I typed. Pressing that little "X" every time I want to type a name or slang in a txt message is really annoying and sometimes I miss it because it's so small. It needlessly slows down the whole process. I don't understand why they wouldn't include that option from the get go.

Last time I used that site to view a picture message (months ago, admittedly), it used Flash, so it will not work on your iPhone.

It should eventually learn your slang, I think. Just keep pressing the little x.

How can you ignore it when it changes it automatically?
He has to hit the x on the word itself so it won't change. Assuming it works the same on every iPhone.

I so rarely every have to hit "X" that it's hard for me to understand I guess. I just pretty much keep typing and rarely do I every have any issues. I seriously haven't had to hit the little "X" in probably the last month or so of use.

In my case though, perhaps it's because I've had the phone for more than a year now, and it knows my words.

I decided to join the party. Sold my Nokia N95 that I got just three weeks ago, mainly because the sound quality on the mp3 player was terrible (I use my phone as a music player, my old SonyEricsson sounded alright), using the internet with the tiny screen and buttons is a hassle and the GPS was pretty useless anyway.

So I got myself a secondhand 2G iPhone to see what the fuss was about and I friggin love it. :D

I'm still on the fence on it. I use 3 languages regularly (Dutch, Papiamentu & English), and only 2 of those are implemented into the dictionary. I sometimes forget to switch the language but that only takes 2/3 words before I notice and switch it back. When I'm typing in Papiamentu though, it SUCKS. For me, either put in ALL languages, or make it easy to shut it off.

Not really feasible to implement every language. Hitting the most spoken languages in the World is generally enough. I don't even know what Papiamentu is, so I'm not surprised that it's not implemented.

But as I said earlier, I agree that they could have an option to turn it off.

I fully agree, until they are able to provide dictionaries for every language (or make it possible for us to make our own dictionaries available through the app store) they should make it easy to turn it off.

Papiamentu is the language spoken in the Caribean, the Dutch Antilles to be exact (Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire)

Once you get used to it, it is hard to imagine using any other phone.

Can't wait to see what the other companies come up with to outdo Apple in the coming years.

It's impossible... trust me, I tried. Someone asked me to text someone on his flip-phone while he had his hands full with making food, and... between trying to figure out the menu navigation and that T9 bullshit that flip-phones use, I nearly threw it across the room.
You seriously CAN'T go back after a while.
