Dunno if anyone else has posted this, but I just found this Springboard theme, which looks pretty neat:

Springboard (two versions):

Will try it out when I get home.
Thanks, I like it.

I've been using "Gradiance V.2" for a while now.
The icons for it are basically the same as the original ones but they do have some small changes in the color and patterns.
There's a "Gradiance 1" that's also nice, I think I like those icons better, but the background isn't as calming as this one.

If I get around to it, I'll use Customize to swap them.

The iPhone is only cheaper thanks to subsidization. You do realize that you can get an 8 GB iPhone now for $199. Of course there is also a two year cell contract that comes along with that. If they are getting rid of the 8 GB model, I can guarantee you that they'll drop the price on the 16.
You guys get it for $199 on 2 year? wtf :( We get it for $249 ($199 if the voice plan is $35 or higher) on a 3 year >=( Of course, that still makes it the cheapest smartphone for existing customers already on a contract, especially with the recent promotion that ended recently.

I held off on the iPhone for a long time because I was adamant about having enough space for all my music. Currently, I have around 20GB and I couldn't see buying a 4 or 8GB model. I caved and bought the 16GB and it's more than enough space. I manually manage my music and I realized how much of it I don't listen to. It all depends on how you use the device but I don't use the iPod function everyday. If you're at all interested in the iPhone it might be worthwhile to really think about how would use the device. For me, 16GB is enough space. Different strokes for different folks but my stubbornness kept me from enjoying a cool phone for a long time.

Same here. I have around the same amount of music and stuck by my 20GB iPod classic until it breathed its last breath.

I only put 9.5GB on my 16GB Touch. The rest I save for video (been watching entire seasons of the Wire on it). It's perfectly fine to just manually manage a playlist and put whatever your listening too atm and leave off the rest.

If you guys are concerned with space, I highly recommend you mess around with iTunes' Smart Playlists. You can do some really funky things. For example, if can have it create one with:

All the songs on two specific albums, a particular artist regardless of album and the remainder a random selection of songs each time you sync that you've not listened to for over month while keeping the entire play under 8GB... it will build that playlist automatically.

Word of advice. Don't drop your phone.

But seriously, what did you expect? They could have actually charged you a lot more.

Yeah, it sucks, but I'm not sure what else you expect them to do.

How is the battery life of OG iPhones when using 3rd party apps?

I get 5-6 hours easily when using just email, internet and making calls.

But that number goes down very quickly when I use 3rd party apps. Is this typical and is it a fault of the iPhone or the apps?

Just saw on HoFo that Beejive has been submitted to Apple:

http://blog.beejive.com/?p=92
Beejive native iPhone app v1.0 complete, submitted to Apple

We are very happy to announce that version 1.0 of BeejiveIM for the iPhone & iPod Touch is complete and has been submitted to Apple for approval. We’re guessing it should be available in the iTunes App store within the next 2 weeks.

Below is the product description & features. We’d like to thank the small group of beta testers for helping us make this the most reliable IM app available for the iPhone!

I wonder if this is the supposed Application Push support. And if so, does it require a subscription to MobileMe?

It does require some sort of proxy (Apple) that does the actual pushing, as far as I know. I think it may make use of the same or similar technologies as MobileMe, but probably won't require paid subscriptions to any sort of service... unless they plan to charge developers to use the service?

i actually expected them to do an estimate for just fixing the front screen

i've never heard of a company that just gives out new product every time something wrong happens with it... until now i guess.

You guys are over thinking this. This is just the app developers developing a workaround to use for notifications until Apple gets their push notification software up and running. As of now, it must just send you an email that gets pushed to your phone as a notification (thus, why they require you to have MobileMe or Exchange/ActiveSync push email). A cool idea to use while we wait for Apple's push notification service to get up and running.

Any news regarding when Safari will support Flash?

Apple's official position has always been that it won't support flash.

Exactly what I'm fearing Juice. I'll buy one now, and then next year you'll see a real revision and and not just an incremental update. Perhaps an upgraded battery as well. Although I'm severely tempted, I'm going to try to force myself to stay on the sidelines with this one.

So when do you expect a major update to occur? Late next year or January-February as Tobor suggests?

anyone got a link to jailbreak for the firmware 2.1?
I would like to unlock my phone for the first time, I need cydia and swirly MMS

its my first time trying to jailbrek an Iphone so please try and find a guide that is EASY to follow :)

I had one of the bright yellow screens with the super reflective black levels and took it back for another. Guess what? Same issue. I'm over my phone at this point.

What the hell is wrong with my 3G? Suddenly its eating the battery in half a day. I even removed push e-mail a few days ago and set it to 15 min intervals, but it seems to get shorter and shorter. I'm on 2.1 and O2.

January-February for capacity bumps. Recent rumors aside.

September of next year for a major update.

EDIT: I meant July, not September.

Honestly? You thought they'd just fix the screen? Do you think Nintendo does that with the DS? Sony with the PSP? Other cell phone companies?? These really aren't modular devices.

Probably a storage update in January/February, much like last year, and a real update to a third generation product in June/July of next year.

This seems to be the place of the iPhone GAF so maybe someone here know when the Nike + iPhone app. will come out ?
I've tried a free App Store thing but it works with 3G network and when I run in the forest there is no network :-/

It's not. It's only going to be on the new iPod touch model. Bummer total.

Are you using a lot of 3rd party apps?

They kill the battery life on my phone.

There is an easy guide to follow online. Right now I forgot the link. I'll have to check on my pc when I return home.

I thought all the 3G phones had the slightly more yellow tinted screens.

Are there some that are even worse?

i know for a fact other cell phone companies just fix screens when they're cracked...

sony, nokia, samsung, motorola, lg...

i think those are 5 of the biggest cell phone companies in the US, no?

many companies fix just one part of their products... they often have a 3rd party repair center where you can send the phone for repair, and they supply the cell phone parts for these places.

i'm just saying it's surprising that apple doesn't just fix the screen... i'm sure they're capable of doing it.

you don't need to patronize me, especially when you haven't done any research into it.

Apologies. The only cell phone repairs for things like this I've seen is through third parties, and those options exist for the iPhone as well. I've never seen the manufacturers bother with fixing items like broken screens.

If you felt I was patronizing you, perhaps it's a result of you coming in here and complaining about Apple fixing your screen when it was something that you broke. They offered you an option to get it repaired, which you could decide to take or not take, but it seemed like you were expecting them to do more for you for some reason. Had you done some research, I'm sure you would have found a third party that would have fixed it for you.

Regardless, didn't mean to ruffle feathers, just irks me when someone breaks something then gets mad at the manufacturer for not bending over backwards to fix the issue they created.

Finally got a new iPhone! woooo!

Is anyone else loving X-plane as much as me? I have wanted a flight sim for the DS or the PSP for so long. I love it!

It is a bummer that AT&T doesn't offer some sort of premium replacement coverage service for the iPhone, considering its continued market penetration. I understand why the standard replacement coverage fee ($9.99/month, I think) could possibly bite them in the ass because so many kids break the damn thing, but I'd probably pay double for that, knowing I'd be covered if something happened to the phone.

It was a plot to keep it from you so you would focus your attention and finish the Neogaf webapp.

Now that that's done, you can whittle away all your free time on Poker dice.

Yes, all my blacks are washed out and blend in together, providing a shimmering effect that was common on the first batch of the iPod Touch when it first launched. My blacks are bright, so I get no true dark color.

After the T-Mobile press conference this morning, I guess we now know why G-mail isn't Pushed to the iPhone. :lol It's a feature on Android.
What exactly does this push feature do? Let's programs run in the background, right? So like if I had AIM and someone IMed me but I was on a call, when I hung up I'd be notified I have a new IM? How does Gmail not already do that? I set my iPhone's mail account to my Gmail account and it alerts me when I get new emails...? How is Gmail push different?

First, don't confuse e-mail push notification with the other server side push technology that Apple is bringing to the apps at some point. Right now, when you sign out of an IM app, for instance, you don't get any notification. That is suppose to change in the future.

Push e-mail, on the other hand, is already integrated and working on Yahoo for instance, and Exchange. That instantly notifies you when ever anything new hits your in box, not on a predetermined schedule, say every 15 minutes or so.

Ooooh, ok. Doesn't seem like THAT big of a deal, but still, thanks for clearing up my confusion.

I guess this app Vicinity is being promoted in the new iPhone ad. Anyone use it? It looks pretty cool, $2.99.
Reviews look poor, say it's pretty outdated with the info it provides.

How can it still recommend CBGB?

Well, it just gets better and better with the app store rejection saga.

Apple's new policy: rejections letters are now under NDA

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/23/apple-extends-non-disclosure-to-app-store-rejection-letters/

Apple has gotten a significant amount of critical press surrounding its rejection policies in the App Store. A few high profile rejections have been widely reported and inspired at least one amusing comic.

Aparently, Apple has now started labeling their rejection letters with Non-Disclosure (NDA) warnings:

THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS MESSAGE IS UNDER NON-DISCLOSURE
Readers should note that Apple's developer correspondence may have already been covered by the original NDA, but Apple is now making it clear.

sigh...

That's not their official position. Their official position is that flash in its current form is too inefficient to run on the iPhone.
