The dropping of the NDA is awesome, as it will directly lead to better apps as developers are able to share information, and software techniques with each other.

The rejected app Podcaster has shown up today on Cydia.
$4.99 and two week trial. Working very well for me so far.

Is there a method that is better than others? I tried using this program that was suppose to automate the whole thing but it would just put it in recovery mode, which would startup iTunes, and then it would just sit there doing nothing.
Just follow the guides at www.iclarified.com
You should be using Quickpwn.

I am completely and utterly frustrated with my phone at the moment. Everything seemed to work so well after the last update too. But now, in the last few weeks, I've experienced more crashes and more lag than I have ever had in the lifetime of the phone.

Not just the app crashes that used to happen before either. But crashing out while in the settings menu. While browsing web pages. While writing emails. I'm going out of my fucking mind here.

What the fuck happened to this phone?

damn, sorry to hear that. It may sound drastic but try a full restore.

I assume you've already tried a restore from backup so if that didn't work as a first attempt, you may need to do a restore as a new phone. you'll lose your iphone notes and 3rd party app data but all contacts, bookmarks, media will, of course, be ported over from the computer.

I have no clue what's causing this, but when I pull the phone away from my ear during a call, you know how the screen comes back on? Well with the 2.1 update applied, it flashed BRIGHT WHITE as it transitions to on or off via the ambient light sensor. It's really jarring, almost like the flash of a camera.

I haven't tried a restore yet. I didn't think it would make a difference considering people have done it before and it fixes it for a few days, then it's back to crashing all the time. I might give it a go anyway though, when I get back to work next week.

So am I the only one experiencing these problems? My phone even froze on me just before and I had to do a hard reset. All I was doing was loading a JPG in a browser while listening to music.

I couldn't ever live without this phone, but damn is it a frustrating device.

You guys really should checkout BeeJive, its kinda pricey (16$) but it is by far the best and most complete app out right now. The devs are even active on their own site answering feedback from users almost instantly.

Its pretty much a better adium for the iphone, works and receive messages when the app is closed and the phone is off. Damn awesome app, can't get enough of it.

I have it and love it. One feature I would add is the ability to swipe left/right to switch between active conversations, rather than pressing on the top bar.

So my iphone is broken.

I bought the game Star Trigon because of the recommendations in another thread. I played it a few times today and it was fine. I try to play it tonight and it sits on the loading screen at the start forever and the iphone is frozen and it won't even let me manually reset/power down. So I just leave it. Like 30 mins later the "connect to itunes" shows up on the screen. I try manually resetting/powering down but it always shows the connect to itunes screen.

When I turn on itunes and hook it up itunes tries to contact the iphone for a while and then it gives me an error saying "the iphone ______ cannot be used with itunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iphone. Check that the SIM card is inserted in your iphone and that it is in PIN-locked"

So is there anything I can do? Or do I need to go down to the AT&T store I bought it at tomorrow and am I going to have to re-input all my contacts and e-mails and everything again?

This has definitely turned me off from buying/using real apps. The only time I've ever had freezes on my iphone have been when trying to play games here and there. But none of them got stuck like this. :\ Never had freezes just using the normal iphone functions.

Have you tried removing and reinserting the sim card? If that does not work, try putting the phone in DFU mode.

1) How do I do remove and reinsert the sim card?

2) How do I put the phone in DFU mode?

The phone came with a little tool that looks like a paperclip, that goes in the little hole near the headphone jack.
Here is a YouTube video.

I did that and stuck it back in, itunes give me the same error. Phone is still in "connect to itunes" mode.

What's this DFU mode that is my last option before spending hours at the store tomorrow exchanging my phone?

DFU mode should allow you to do a restore with itunes.

Safari is buggy as hell. I had to use my iphone to browse the net for a week while my computer was down and that damn thing crashed far more than I ever remember it crashing back in the past.

Just wanted to get that off of my chest.

Again, what is DFU? You are talking moon language to me when you say "try DFU mode". I don't know what you are talking about. What buttons do I press? What do I type on my PC? If I can restore it that'd be great.

Type 'iphone dfu' in google. Tons of related articles/video.

I DFU'd my iphone

I restored my iphone and it finished the restore process with no problems

Then it reset the iphone and said "waiting for iphone"
Then it gave me the same error as before:
""the iPhone "iPhone" cannot be used with itunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iphone. Check that the SIM card is inserted in your iphone and that it is not PIN-locked"

So...I guess I'm going to the AT&T store tomorrow. Did the freaking videogame DEACTIVATE my phone or something? wtf I am never playing Star Trigon again.

Don't go to the AT&T store. They can't resolve defective issues with iPhones once they're found to be in working condition leaving their store. Take it to an Apple store, and they'll give you no grief in returning the phone. My friend had to return his recently, and it took a whole ten minutes. They didn't even look at his AT&T receipt.

You will have to schedule a Genius Bar appointment from Apple's website.

Really? hmmmm...so I just take my AT&T receipt and the iphone to the Apple store after I setup an appointment?

Yes, and they are extremely down to earth regarding iPhone issues and are more than willing to help. The guy who helped my friend told him there was absolutely no problem replacing his phone. They'll go in the back, pull out a new phone in a small white box, activate it, and slap a new serial number sticker over your existing box. They'll connect your existing phone into their laptop to make sure everything is legit, fill out some brief paperwork and send a little info to corporate via the web. You might need your I.D., but I can't remember for sure.

Cool, thanks for the help.
I have an appointment at 11:20am tomorrow. Hope everything goes well.

Last time when I updated to 2.1 it backed up my contacts, e-mail settings, etc... everything besides apps (which is fine). Should I be able to load them on an entirely different iphone if I get a new iphone?

Since you'll more than likely be getting a new phone, you won't want to connect it to your computer until your battery fully drains. You can download previously purchased apps directly to your phone in the meantime, obviously free of charge. Once you connect the phone to your computer, it will then transfer all the apps that are stored on your computer to your new phone.

Why would you want to wait for the battery to fully drain?

So you have maximum battery life. Every single person I've ever talked to about this phone told me to do that. I did it, and I have excellent battery life. You should always let your phone go through complete cycles when possible.

My understanding is that lithium batteries don't require it and can even be harmful:

the interwebs said:
1. Battery Memory - When I first got my new cellphone, my friend recommended to fully drain the battery before recharging it. His reasoning was connected to the idea of battery memory. Allowing the battery to fully discharge then recharging to max, supposedly gives you the complete battery capacity. Otherwise, if you simply charged from the half way point to max battery capacity, the battery would treat the half way point as the empty point, thus cutting your battery capacity in half.

Problem is battery memory doesn’t apply to Lithium batteries, this advice was meant for Nickel based batteries. Fully discharging your Lithium battery frequently can actually be quite harmful to your battery’s health, possibly rendering it completely unusable if energy levels go too low.

The good news is today’s lithium batteries have a safety circuit in place to insure the battery doesn’t reach the point of no return. The safety circuit isn’t fool proof of course, if you leave your battery completely drained for a few days, even the circuit’s protective measures won’t save it.

Lithium batteries are typically stored at half charge because max charge can damage them too. Or something. Who knows what to believe.

I didn't and I have excellent battery life.
It really all depends on what you do with the thing.

Wrong type of battery. unnecessary.

Well, I guess it doesn't matter then...whatever. What I've been doing has worked great for me. The AT&T people and the Apple people told me to do it. With the different battery types out there, I can't keep up with what to do with each type.

I got everything to work and unlocked it, but I just hooked it up to my computer again and iTunes wants to know whether I want to treat it like a new phone or restore from a backup. If I've unlocked it can I just restore all my old contacts and files and change SIM cards? Or will it ruin the unlocked feature so I'm stuck with ATT again?

Guys is there any way I can get out of my contract with sprint?
I currently have about 8 months left and I cant stand not having a Iphone anymore.

So, is it standard practice for AT&T to bill you in advance? My first iPhone bill ($195.66, i want to shoot myself) had my first month pro-rated from when I started the service + the entire second month + activation fee. Is it going to continue that way or will they "skip" a month and not bill me again until after my third billing cycle?

You won't be skipping any bills. If you started in the middle of the month, the charge you the prorated amount for the days that were left and tack it on to your first months bill. Pretty standard for most companies to operate that way.

Eh, standard practice for AT&T maybe. I've never had a cell phone service or even land lines bill me in advance of the usage. How the hell do they account for overages? Tack it on to the following months bill?

Yep. They just roll it into the next month, as your base contract remains the same. Verizon does the same thing, which is why when I canceled with them to get the iPhone, I got a pro-rated check back from the to cover the unused portion of the month.

Yeah they tack it on the following month. I had to text pictures from my Sprint phone to my computer before i canceled the service. The following month they sent me a bill for 75 cents.

It's actually better for Lithium batteries to be put on a charger on a regular basis instead of waiting till it drains completely. You basically never want to take Lithium batteries all the way down.

Just pay the fee, I did and never regretted it. :lol

Go ahead and restore it to get your contacts, messages, photos, settings, etc back.

It will stay unlocked.

i'd disagree - Safari is still as buggy as ever, crashing randomly on pages that don't crash any other time, just, yeah.

i think your memory is flawed, it hasnt gotten more buggy, but it hasnt gotten less buggy. it's just...buggy.
