Ok. I updated to 2.2.1 the other day. Tonight I've been browsing GAF using the Neogaf app for over 2 hours and I haven't had one crash. I've been going in and out of various threads, even heavy picture laden ones like the Hot Women thread and the January desktop thread. I actually think Apple finally got Safari stable on this thing. This phone just keeps better and better. :D
Neat. I'm still debating on if I want to jailbreak my new one or not. Why don't you personally?

Thanks. Will shut it off every night.

In all honesty I don't see the point of this. It's much easier for me to just leave it on, charge it overnight (or whenever) when needed. I leave my phone on 24/7 and the battery is just fine.

The amount of battery drained from standby is insignificant vs the amount of power you'll use from everyday use. Why not save yourself the 30 seconds of startup every day?

It's a Safari thing. I think it won't animate gifs that are really big.

Does anybody know of a connector that will allow you to plug a normal microphone into an iPhone for use with voice recording apps? I want to be able to use a good Mic, not just the headset one.

I bought my iPhone. I'm waiting for my case to arrive.

Case I bought: http://www.switcheasy.com/products/RebelSerpent/RebelSerpent.php

I'm still waiting for switcheasy to ship the case. Hopefully they ship fast.

Current Apps:

  • Mobile News
  • Shazam
  • Pandora
  • Google
  • What's On
  • Google Earth
  • Phone Flix
  • Now Playing
  • Wikipanion
  • Restaurants
  • Weatherbug

  • Urbanspoon
  • i.TV
  • Seadragon

  • Sportacular
  • Stanza
  • eBay
  • Wi-Fi Finder
  • Last.fm

What other good applications are there to download? I don't have any games yet what would you recommend for my first download?

As far as jailbreaking goes I'm using firmware 2.2.1 so I'm screwed on that front I guess. Though I'm not sure how risky it is.

Should I buy the extended warranty for $60? Also how long does the iPhone battery typically last?

It's now possible to jailbreak the 2.2.1
Good to hear!
Now I just gotta spend the 90ish minutes of doing that and then getting everything back to the way I have it now.

is iPhlix the same as iFlix? What's the story behind that?
iPhlix is the same as iFlix. Netflix wanted the guy to change the name of his app hence the name change.

Get PocketFlix, it just came out and it is from the same guy who made the app Now Playing. I purchased both, but iPhlix and it is not as good as PocketFlix. iPhlix takes so damn long to connect to one's account and it downloads the movie covers every single time in every single section of the app. I think PocketFlix must cache the movie cover images because every section of the app loads a hell of alot faster. If so then then it is saving download time and battery.

Weatherbug stinks, get the WeatherChannel app. And like I mentioned above, purchase PocketFlix.

Still waiting for the 2G Touch Jailbreak. :(
You don't have to wait any longer. The 2G iPod Touch jailbreak was released yesterday. However, it's a tethered version meaning you lose the jailbreak once you turn off your iPod. It's also slightly complicated since you can't use quickpwn for it yet like you could to jailbreak the others.

Does anyone here use one of the full body skins? I've looked at cases and they're all hideous. I looked some places and people recommend InvisibleShield or BestSkinsEver. Anyone?

I have this and love it. The lens actually works but only on upclose shots

Yeah, I use it in conjunction with Evernote for class. Taking pictures of diagrams and the like in my textbook, and even some text. Then I have notes that I can read on the bus without lugging around textbooks. Evernote is probably my favorite software I've started using in the past year.

Just got Evernote, seems really nice. That was a one thing I never understood about the Notes app by apple. It doesn't sync through Mobile Me which makes no sense whatsoever.

So guys, my mom tried sending a text message today and the process couldn't be completed. The progress bar fills up to a point then stops. No errors pop up. She's also unable to receive text messages either.

I figured it might of needed an update but to no avail. I tried back up/restore/update with no results either.

Her carrier is Rogers. Has there been any specific problems related to text messaging in recent times?

I use bodyguardz and love it. the protection is great and looks really good. only problem is that the back piece, for me, has been really difficult to get perfect. but the lifetime replacement plan makes it all worth it. i will never use a case as long as i have bodyguardz

I had this once happen with AT&T. What I ended up doing was a hard reset (not a restore - center button and top button pressed and held for 15 seconds) and then when it started back up everything was fine.

I finally jailbroke 2.2.1 and used aptbackup for my apps. Aptbackup actually worked this time around for me, so that definitely saved alot of time.

Jailbreaking 2.2.1 was way too stressful for me. Got stuck in a reboot loop. Took about an hour of random button presses and USB connecting before it started up. The firmware really does seem to make a difference to Safari though, so it's worth it.

Is there any way to get my own SMS alerts on this thing?

My buddy has a G1 and has a couple sweet apps that I'd like to try on the iphone if they're available.

The first was an application that changed your ringer to silent or vibrate if you got within a distance of a marked location. For example, it can silence your phone if you get within a short radius of your work's GPS location.

The second was a barcode picture scanner to track the food you eat and gives you nutritional stats. There was also a similar app that I saw on a commercial that allowed you to take a picture of a barcode and compare prices at online retailers.

Do either of these exist for us?

Install winterboard, and put your sms sound in library>theme>folder(name of sms sound)>UISounds. The sms file needs to be named sms-received with the extension .caf.

Anyone use a switch easy pure screen protector? How is it over time?

They say they don't leave a stick residue. I have one on my iphone and one my hand. It has a stickyness to it, but it indeed doesn't leave a sticky residue on my hand.

But... I don't like the idea of this staying on my phone for a long time in any kind of heat.

People usually recommend Power Support Crystal Film right? I like the idea of static cling.

Should I remove the switcheasy pure?

EDIT: I took it off. And while it wasn't sticky, there was some clear spots that took rubbing to get off. So, prolonged time + heat... fuck that. Not gambling.

Oh yeah, while this thread is being revised, might as well add some actual news.

Apple has released OS update 2.2.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch.

it has two notes:

-fixes camera roll bug with saved images
-improves safari stability.

Download away, folks. (except you jailbroken people)
I had no idea 2.2.1 was released... wow I'm late.

What was the camera roll bug?

Can anyone tell me why I can't run apps after dling a new app?

I get this aswell, I have switched laptops while I get a new power cable for my main one. I have downloaded apps through the phone but every now and again I think it log's me out with no clear way to log back in (buying a app does do it).

Every now and again my apps just wont work because of it. So annoying

So I found some cases that were not ugly! That skin stuff seemed like a huge pain in the ass. Right now I'm looking at any of the SwitchEasy cases. They're all pretty nice. Anyone have one? How is it? How easy is the install?

So I'm really considering an iPhone purchase. Any advice on whether the extra 8gigs in the 16gig model is worth the extra money? I don't plan on using the phone for music.

I have the 16 Gig, but right now, it's really not necessary. Apps don't take up that much space and if you're not using it to listen to music I'm assuming you're not going to ripping movies to it.

apparently if you saved an image from safari, it showed up in the roll as a thumbnail and not the full size image.

i never played around with it so i'm not sure the extent of the problem.

Only thing missing so far is the friends features, PocketFlix has been a good experience so far.

I have no experience with cell phone plans other than the prepaid service I've been on for years, so I guess this qualfies as a noob question:

I was recently made aware that employees of the company I work for get a 20% discount on AT&T plans. So I am thinking about switching my unlocked iPhone over to proper AT&T coverage.

I've messed around with AT&T's online site, and it looks like their normal voice/data plans will qualify with the discount. Using their site though, it won't let me sign up without buying a phone and activating a 2 year contract. I don't want a new phone and I don't want a new contract.

If I went to an AT&T store, would I be able to sign on without a contract or phone? Or are they only interested in locking people into a contract? It seems stupid to turn away people for such reasons, but cell companies in general seem pretty retarded.

Ok, I tried taking my iPod touch (2G) to school today to use wifi, and I've connected to the school's network, but whenever I navigate away from the wifi menu, no internet works. Then I go back to Settings and wifi says "Off." I turn it on again and the same thing happens. Sometimes once I connect, the networks will just disappear even though it says wifi is "On."

I used my home network without problems over winter break. What's the deal? Is it the school network? Is my iPod going wacko? Is it the 2.2.1 update?

:(

*rants*

Dumb iphone. Earlier I had already typed a whole paragraph to post, but I had to use the backspace once to correct a spelling. The backspace locked itself and proceeded to delete everything a letter at a time. I tried mashing the keypad but it was no good. BLAH! >:\

*ends rant*

I need some help here. I've bought some songs off of the iTunes store on my phone, but I have no idea how to get them onto my computer. Help?

Just sync with iTunes? Maybe I am missing something here. After the iPhone syncs with iTunes your iPhone should backup and then transfer purchases from phone to computer.

Ugh, I'm not eligible for an upgrade until 5/30 and I'll be able to get my iPhone in four weeks or so...

I have money either way, but saving 200 bucks is always nice.

Should I wait until June? But by then, I may as well wait until the conference until they announce the new one, and then wait until it launches a few weeks later, but have to wait more, since I'm not a "DAY 1" type of guy, I like all the kinks to be worked out, so potentially waiting to september-ish to get a phone, rather than buying one in March.

Should I or shouldn't I?

I would wait. Or at least thats what I am doing. It seems like the iPhone is not just going to get a storage upgrade.

Hmm... That's quite incorrect actually.

That's why I asked, I'm sure we'll see some new functionality, but I'm tired of being like the only person on this earth not able to use a good browser on my phone, and all other cool smart-phone things. I know it's probably going to be a nice upgrade, multiple cores, more memory, camera w/flash (ZOMG!), but I think I could live without that provided that limited multi-tasking is added to the 3G. Copy/paste will probably be a software update, so that doesn't worry me either. I just want to see what rumors start happening in a few weeks to see if it's really worth it to wait. But I really want an iPhone.

Probably old by GAF standards(searched the thread but didn't get anything back) but www.myxer.com is an amazing site to easily get pretty much any ringtone ever for free. Download>Open in Itunes>Sync. You can even edit the ringtones pre download to adjust the volume or to use specific parts.
