Anyone who claims Verizon is in any way less of a ripoff than AT&T is crazy. They are both damn expensive.

If you want to claim Verizon has better coverage in your East coast city of choice go ahead and say so but let's not act like you save any money using those shifty Verizon crippled phones.

This is really all that matters to me. I'd rather use an amazing phone on a decent network than a shitty phone on an amazing network.

Verizon & ATT have pretty much carbon copy rate plans w/ the same pricing for their features (Messaging, Data, etc etc). Think the only difference is their My Circle calling plan for their family plans above 1400 minutes. ATT will roll out something similar towards the end of the year.

That's basically why I made the jump over a year ago.

Had my iPhone stolen a week ago. Getting antsy in the pantsy for a new phone. Is the 3GS jailbroken yet, or should I just spring for a 3G? PEACE.

WTF I hear this high pitched sound comming from my iPhone's speaker when I hold it near my ear. Is this normal? I'm using an iPhone 3g with O.S. 3.0 GM.

This was reported to be happening to some iPhones when the 3GS launched. It's not unheard of. I don't know that there's been a fix.

I've fixed it I think. The sound was comming from the screen :p As soon as the screen went black the sound went away also the sound could be heard from anywhere, not just the bottom part. Adjusting the brightnes settings seems to have fixed it. That or the frequency is just to high for me to hear :D

Just after roughly choosing a comparable smartphone plan on Verizon to my iPhone plan with AT&T, I am in no way seeing a savings. In fact, I would be paying more. Additionally, I would be paying more for the Diamond compared to an iPhone 16GB 3GS.

Verizon with the HTC Touch Diamond
450 Minutes - $40
Unlimited Data- $45
1500 Texts - $15
Visual Voicemail - $3(Really Verizon?)
Total - $103

Unlimited data (Nontethered) is $29.99 on Verizon. Thanks to my work discount it's $25.

My bill with 700 min, two Blackberries (Mine and my wife) and two data plans is $117 a month total after taxes etc. There is free visual voicemail options for the Blackberry as well without being nickel and dimed by Verizon, but I am not sure about the HTC.

Yeah, like I said, it was just a rough look at the options on the site. I saw an option for Web and Email and then Unlimited Data when you select a smartphone. I don't know what the difference is, though. But if the Web and Email thing is all you need to compare with the iPhone data plan, then I guess it isn't as bad. And I'm sure with a possible iPhone release, Verizon would include Visual Voicemail.

Same here. Switched from a Curve on Verizon to the 3GS on AT&T.

The AT&T network in Cleveland isn't terrible, but can be spotty at times. I'd much rather have the iPhone with spotty service then the BlackBerry with great reception.

Is there a way not to have unlimited data so I can reduce the cost. Or is it necessary?
No, with ATT you must have the iPhone data plan, which comes in only one flavor: unlimited. I think iPhones change most people's smartphone habits, though... you'll be using the data network more than you expect, unless you live in WiFi Heaven.

Or live in edge central where you get fucking 3-5kbps speed.

Yeah, that is a problem(?) lol. Everywhere I am, I'm usually on WiFi. Either on campus or at home. Outside of those locations, I am rarely using data over 3G. Of if I am, it is just web-surfing, which doesn't use that much data at all.

You need to get MobileMe and track that shit down like Dog the bounty hunter and post your experience.

Web and data is $29 and unlimited (4 gigs limitation actually, but no one is downloading 4 gigs of data a month on a Blackberry or iPhone right? :D ) and the higher priced tier which is what? $45-50? Same plan but meant for tethering with a laptop and truly unlimited. When you order these phones you need to be sure to let the rep know unless you want a surprise on your bill.

The $29 plan is equivalent to what iPhone users pay for their network data which ends up being cheaper on Verizon over AT&T, right?

Verizon nickel and diming is nothing new, it is why they remove the built in GPS on my Berry so I would have to pay for their own navigation service. Doesn't bother me though since I don't use it anyway but whatever...I've been with them since 1998 and they have always had solid service and great customer support. My wife's spotty AT&T finally pissed her off enough to get on with me as a share plan. heh.

Luckily I couldn't give a shit about the iPhone although I do enjoy my Touch. You can pry my Crackberry out of my cold dead hands. ;)

Looks like it's the envy touch and ipod touch for me then :(. I get discount thru my company with verizon.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. AT&T does not offer any tethering with its unlimited data plan. Who knows how much extra that will be. And, AT&T also offers a GPS service for $10 per month for the iPhone. I don't know how much Verizon is, though. Besides that, I'll wait for that market to mature a bit before deciding on if I want to go for a GPS service. Turn by Turn Directions are pretty tempting...

And the plans (data, 450 min, and 1500 texts) are pretty much the same between AT&T and Verizon with Verizon being $3 more expensive due to Visual Voicemail not being included.

So I was at the Cheap Trick/Poison/Def Leppard concert last night (which was a blast btw. 16,000 fans in attendance) and I took some video with the iPhone during Poison's set. I have to say for a phone with a tiny speaker, it does a decent job at capturing video from a concert where the noise level is through the roof.

the portrait mode videos just dont look right... is there a particular reason for taking it that way?

not true. brother uses blackberry SIM with whatever unlimited data plan that had with the iPhone 3G. now if youre talking about the 3GS, im not sure, but i doubt its different. you can also use any ATT sim card, data plan or not in the iphone.

Very interesting. I'm going to run some similar tests because I'm having similar battery issues.

I can't remember if I mentioned here, but I followed up on my drastic battery reduction issues. It was due to push notifications. With those activated, a process was running even when the phone was asleep, using up the battery, so that I ran out of power in about 10 hours, regardless of whether I was using the phone or not.
Switching off push and rebooting killed this process, and I once again return to my regular usage.

The key is, when asleep, usage should be close to zero, when not connected. If you're getting the same thing, kill push notifications and push email, and reboot and see if this solves your battery issues.

The weird thing is I find this to be inconsistant. I've noticed a couple times my battery would drop dramatically over night but then others it was fine. I'm sure push is a key factor here but there has to be something else involved otherwise I would think it would always be such a drain rather than just some of the time.

How many push apps are you running? Is it possible the more push apps you're running, the bigger the drain with push?

Indeed. But I'm surprised people are only coming to this conclusion now. Push has always destroyed your battery, and for good reason. By enabling it you are telling your phone that you want to receive your email the INSTANT it was sent to you. This means it is constantly on the network.

I always leave my phone plugged into the wall over night. If I don't have my charger on me, I disable push. I know 100% that my phone will be dead when I get up in the morning if it's had push enabled and it has been left off the charger over night.

Yeah, but people weren't expecting such a huge hit with notifications. You know, not like a reduction by 80% down to 20% of what you're normally used to. It's ugly, especially since I don't even have a connection to data. The whole point of push notifications was so that you don't run background processes that reduce battery life - if this is push, then background processes would've been horrible.

Single App. BeeJive. I've heard that it affects only some people, so who knows whether it's app related, server related or what. Also note, I don't have any data plan, so the only time I can connect to push is when I'm on wifi anyway, yet it still drains when I have it on.

I also notice as did many others that wifi is a bit shakier. I wonder if a lot of power is going in to wireless connections? It's possible there;s a buggy implementation. For example, even after turning off push, anecdotally, it seems a process continues to run in background, and I need to reboot to kill it.

Just picked up my the iPhone 3GS 16Gb, its my first smart phone and i'm really loving it.

Thanks to the other GAF threads i already have a slew of very impressive games from the app store (that thing is addictive).

A question for veteran iPhone users, do you use a case and if so any recommended cases?

There's something about the phone that compels me to cover it up!

I typically do not like cases as it bulks up the phone and messes up its very sexy aesthetic but if you have to get one I recommend the InCase Slider. It's a hardshell case that adds very little bulk to the phone and the bottom slides off easily for docking. I got mine in black so it doesn't change the look and feel of the phone much at all.

Honestly though you don't NEED a case unless you're obsessed with keeping your phone looking out-of-the-box new (and what does that matter if you can't see that anyway since it's in a fucking case!) - I kept my 3G naked in my pocket for a whole year with coins, keys etc and it's still in great condition.

Christ, I just got my screen swapped out at the Apple store because of dead pixels, and now I get another screen with a bright white Pixel in the middle. This is really obnoxious.

I rented a movie through my iPhone the other night, and it keeps giving me an error every time I try to download it. "Error: Tap to Retry" or whatever. It won't even let me download it from my computer now. Am I out a rental fee now? Because this shit is seemingly never going to download to my phone.

I just recieved my switcheasy rebel serpent and I'm liking it so far. I got a case because I KNOW that I will drop my phone numerous times in the next two years. Damn alcohol! Just having my 3gs for 2 weeks and I noticed some very small scratches on the back. And that is with no drops. My friend also had no case on his Iphone and dropped it on the screen and it cacked the screen so bad it was useless. BTW I'm typing from my iPhone 3gs now and I absolutly love it!

if it's over 10 megs, then you have to download it off wi-fi.

I'd say it's definitely a bug. There's no way push technology, the way it's supposed to work, should ever be a "destroyer of batteries" on that scale.

If you get a heavy volume of email and notifications then sure, obviously you'll notice a decrease in battery life vs. not having notifications at all for a number of reasons (screen lighting up for each notification, sound playing, phone rumbling, the small amount of battery the listener might use, etc), but there's no way it should be that big an impact.

If you use a SIM from an account that doesn't have a data plan in the iPhone it is likely that the data plan will be put on for you in a short amount of time.

I have the slider and it's great; the only reason I don't have it go nude is that I have a tendency to drop phones. I don't use a screen cover because the screen is glass and won't scratch unless you try your damndest too.

Thanks for the advice. I might give that case a try. I'm not super concerned about minor scratches, and i don't normally drop phones, but i guess its the ipod training i feel it should be in a case!

I'm less concerned with showing the world that I have an iPhone and more concerned with the fact that between messenger bags, backpacks, my pocket, my desk at work, my desk at home, bars, parties, and about 10 trips through an airport per year, all the banging and shuffling will damage it.

I use a white Switcheasy Capsule Rebel. Yeah, it adds bulk, but I'm also pretty sure my iPhone's a whole lot safer now.

A jailbreak method for the 3GS has been released! Note: it's Windows XP only. And if you haven't read these posts from the dev-team already, do so, and back up your iBEC and iBSS if you're interested in jailbreaking. (ps the software unlock works as well on the 3GS)

The earlier posts on this page bitching about service costs made me remember that I get an 8% discount from AT&T through my university. Not a lot, but every little bit helps. My bill is only going to be about $15 more/mo than I was paying for a data-less plan at Verizon (with VZ Navigator)

My podcasts/audiobooks are not resuming at the place I left off after I hook up my ipod touch to charge. Anyone else having this problem? I have OS 3.0. Thanks.

I absolutely LOVE my Capsule Rebel, it feels awesome in your hand and it protects the phone extremely well. Well worth $25, even without all the extra stuff in the box!

I am really thinking about getting a 3g s but I would have to sign my life over to ATT. Is ATT really as bad as people say it is? I get 3g coverage according to their site which was the most import thing for me. It seems like the cheapest plan I can get going is 90 bucks, which is little talk time (rarely use my phone to talk) and unlimited messaging, and of course data. How do the rollover minutes work, because I would probably be building up a shit ton if it works the way I think it does. I'm kind of getting frustrated using my 2g phone on t-mobile, I want those new features.
