iPhone - Official Thread

One last thing: According to the article you linked me to regarding push, the problems are faced by people who used ultrasn0w, which the iClarify says I don't need to use since my phone is officially unlocked (I should use only redsn0w to jailbreak). Does that make any difference?

If I buy operator locked Iphone is there a way to "unlock" it so it can be used with other operators. Living in Sweden right now but will move permanently to Denmark in about 2-3 weeks. Iphone is a lot cheaper here in Sweden (about 15-20%) but all of them are operator locked. Can I "safely" unlock it and use it with Denmark operators?

  • Thank you! I've been reading some of the tutorials for some time.

  • As I wasn't the person who personally bought the phone, I'm having slight doubts about what sort of vendor my friend dealt with. I heard reports of stores selling some store-unlocked phones as factory unlocked.

  • Good to know.

  • I thought the whole idea of factory unlocked phones is that they're not tied to a certain provider. Obviously, I'm gonna use my phone with a different one company than the ones in New Zealand. Would that put me in the same boat of all the others? If so, I've no idea why I bothered with getting a factory unlocked. :\

Anyhow, thanks for the feedback. I'll PM mrkgoo about that last point.

I've been following, but I really didn't know if there was anything useful I could add. I indeed have an unlocked NZ iPhone, but I have never jailbroken it, so I I'm not sure about any of your questions.

I'm in the Us at the moment, using a T-mobile sim, and I simply update with every update with no issues regarding phone compatibility.

The only thin I can say is that I think there IS a way to check the iPhone, but I believe it's by the model number or something. I'll have to do some research and get back to you.

edit: You know, I swear this used to have a model number listing too, but as I viewed this, this page appears to have been updated recently, and I don't see the model numbers anymore. Maybe I was mistaken.

THANK YOU!

Tbh, I'm beginning to think twice about jailbreaking. I probably won't for the first few weeks, just to gauge my actual need for the jailbreak. I'm glad that everything works fine in your case, especially since I'm gonna (obviously) be using a different provider.

I recently updated with the iPhone 3.0.1 update.

The 3.0 update was SO terrible for speed for the 3G; all apps ran slow, or failed to launch, and to get the keyboard to pop up or RESPOND in Google maps or Texting was a nightmare. I feel like the 3.0.1 improved this, but they made no mention of this fix in their update notes. Any ideas on why my iPhone (and many others who've updated) are 'faster' with the update?

Also, I may be LTTP, but is there any word on the "late summer" release of MMS with AT&T?

Very easy, I just did it since I'll be in Seattle for a few days and my brother had a T-Mobile SIM card he got while he was in New York. Apparently Canada's the only country that charges long distance for calling the same country =[

Steps:
1. Update to 3.0.1 Firmware
2. Download the 3.0 Firmware (not sure if you can still do this through iTunes)
3. Run redsn0w to jailbreak using the 3.0 Firmware whe it asks for ISPW
4. Go to Cydia, Packages, Add http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com
5. Search ultrasn0w in Cydia and install it

You now have a jailbroken, unlocked iPhone.

As mentioned previously, you won't have push issues; these are caused by the hacktivation procedure performed by redsn0W only when your iphone is not activated. Since yours will be, redsn0W will not replace your genuine certs, thus no push issues.

Any further concerns, please PM me.

well, i think today's the day i finally cave and get a 3GS

granted they're utterly sold out in Vancouver, but signing up for one and getting on the waiting list is practically the same thing, right!

I shall name my SECOND newborn "Operations", as well.

I really appreciate all the help you've offered thus far man, and this was in no way an attempt to discredit your previous answers; I just got confused after further reading into the matter.

Did you already have an iPhone or are you taking the plunge?

...either way, you won't be disappointed :D

One comment there mentioned having problems but another said there were none. I'd go with what mrkgoo and operations have say anyway.

OK, this might be a weird question, but here it goes...

Has anybody figured out how to get around Yahoo email's problem with sending contact info?

I didn't even know this problem existed, but a buddy of mine just bought a 3GS and was sending me his contact info via the "send contact" feature, and the vcard was all in plain text instead of sent as an attachment in the proper format. I looked on:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2081258

...and found out that this was a known problem with Yahoo's email servers. This is exactly the problem my friend is having, and sure enough, my friend is using a Yahoo email account.

Has anyone here run into this problem and found a solution, or should i just tell my friend to get a GMail account?

Oh, note I I did use push when it was first announced, but it was a huge drain on battery, so I stopped using it. So they could even have blocked it now, and I wouldn't know.

All in your head. You just installed a new firmware, which cleaned up your phone. 3.0.1 was merely 3.0 with the SMS vulnerability fix.

My phone probably s slightly slower on 3.0.1.

That said, I SWEAR that I was getting constant ALODs on 3.0.0 - haven't seen one since on 3.0.1. Possibly a loose byte on the 3.0.0 download? Could also be an offending app that was removed or updated. You never now.

So how do you get 3G on an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile's network? I read it had something to do with shaving the antennae or something.

Unless some amazing discovery was found, it's not possible. They run on different frequencies, they can't work together.

This. Can you please find where you read that you need to shave the antenna? :lol

T-Mobile now has 3G support for the Sidekick LX, so it might actually work with the iPhone. Considering EDGE does..

Night and day. EDGE was pretty much a universal standard. 3G has many different network types. Voice and EDGE networks for AT&T and T-Mobile are the same, but 3G is different. Yes T-Mobile has 3G, but that doesn't mean it's the same 3G as AT&T, despite the other 2 signal types being the same.

Yes it's a sloppy mess, and luckily 4G seems to be alleviating it completely.

this will be my first iphone. i've only had 2 cell phones in my entire life.

This is totally off-topic, but I just noticed how they screwed you over when they removed the rep system.

I have version 2.2.1 and have been waiting to update because I'm not sure if I want to jailbreak it or not.

Is it possible that this older version is having problems connecting to 3G?

I mentioned earlier that I have problems connecting to it. I'm going to send it in eventually because the bottom left of the screen is dead, but I was just wondering while I wait for a good time to send it in.

Thanks a lot mate! One more question, will I be able to update normally afterward or do I have to wait for new hacks?

Thank you for your time!

You cannot update to newer versions of the iphone firmware without losing your jailbreak.. the geneeral process is to wait to make sure the new version can be jailbroken, then update, then re-jailbreak, then reinstall your jailbreak apps.

Like what I did, I waited about 2 weeks after the launch of 3.0 to update because some Cydia apps need to be transferred to be able to work for 3.0. It's definitely worth waiting it out though.

Saurik is working on a way to easily upgrade without losing your jailbreak... supposed to be out in the next week.

would be awesome if it kept my categories.

u should still wait before upgrading anything, especially if you are running unlocked.

So I dropped my iPhone 3G tonight on a ceramic floor. It hit face first and the screen has sadly fucking cracked. Has anyone had this happen and if so is it worth making an appointment at the genius bar trying to get a free replacement because I really don't wanna shell out 250 bucks, help is appreciated!

It's $199 at the Apple store, but a friend of mine looked around and found a local place that replaces iPhone screens for $100.

So I'm getting my friends old cracked (as in jailbroken, as well as the screen is cracked) iphone 3G. Do I REALLY need itunes for this? I mean, it seems like an obvious "duh, yes" sort of question, but I've heard rumors that winamp somehow works. Reason why I ask is because iTunes really hates my computer (Vista 64, with Zune software installed), and refuses to even install.

Also, am I going to have to manually put all my contacts back in if I used T-Mobile? Seems like a pain, but, well, APPS!

You're reading it as wrong as anyone could possibly read it.

Just bring it in and decide if the price they quote you is what you're willing to pay. It's not like they have a hand on your wallet.

Haha, I figured it was to good to be true =[

But yeah, will definitely be heading over there tomorrow hopefully they'll be feeling generous for some reason!

Sorry for the double post guys, but just curious. I was reading in June Apple changed its upgrade plan for the 3Gs to $199 could I theoretically go to the store tomorrow and just upgrade my 3G to the 3Gs?

Also does anyone know typically when you become eligible for an upgrade? sorry for all the questions GAF, I really do love you<3

Just got a couple of iPhone 3GS's for me and the wife. Very happy with this phone so far, even as a 2 year iPod Touch user...it's a massive upgrade.

So what's the consensus on the 3GS? Protection or none? I've been 24 hours with no case or screen cover, and it's really sleek. Seeing people mentioning cracked screens scares me tho, and I'm wondering if people have opinions. (I know it might be covered here, but this is a big thread).

Also does a screen cover on the 3GS mess with the fingerprint free screen?

Call AT&T or login online to see when you're eligible. Their dates aren't always the same, I've seen people eligible after a year and others at the standard 19 month mark.

Well of course, putting a screen protector over the screen will render the oleophobic property of the screen useless.

I say get a case and leave the screen be.

Any idea how I can watch the live BBC one and two streams on my iPhone? I'm at work today and want to watch the formula one on my lunch break :lol

I don't find it really to be a big deal, maybe because I don't have many many apps. When updating and jailbreaking, I just lay in bed for awhile before going to bed and find all my old apps. It puts me to sleep. :lol

I can't seem to get PrivaCY because it says to install more sources. Doesn't make since because shouldn't that source (Saurik's) already be installed with my Cydia?

Anyone know the source off hand that I could manually add? I seem to be having problems locating it.

In order to jailbreak and ultrasn0w do I need to have a data plan or subscription to some operator? Like do I have to use internet to download stuff and such?

No. You will need a Wi-Fi/3G connection to use Cydia though.

Obviously you will need to download the jailbreak tools onto your computer, as well as be able to point the jailbreak software to the IPSW file you want to run/are running on your phone. (IPSW is the extension of the software update file iTunes downloads when updating your phone/pod).

Hey guys,

Is there any radio app that has clear channel radio stations? I tried out Wunder Radio for 6 bucks but realized Clear Channel pulled their stations from that app. I 'wunder' why they didn't have a disclaimer about it somewhere in small text.
