Check the frequencies, Kenneth. U.S. UMTS/HSDPA operates on different frequencies than Europe.
Yeah, thats what I figured. 3g in Europe/Asia uses a different frequency than the US.

So what would be the life of the battery on the N95 in this case then? If it were do the same thing you stated, it would have a battery life of like 20 mins. In which case, I'm still better off with the iPhone.

And I'd be willing to bet that the iPhone, paired with a bluetooth mic and surfing over WiFi will still be able to get at least an hour of battery life.

Based on Apples stated battery life? Did we not learn anything from their laughably overblown stated battery life for the earlier iPods?

And N95 battery life problems are blown out of proportion by people who don't own them. So far today I've watched a 60min ep of The Prisoner, surfed the net for about 15 minutes, talked for about 30 minutes, listened to about 30-45mins worth of MP3s, shown off GPS positioning, and had a BT earpiece paired the entire day and the battery meter hasn't moved.

I don't expect the iPhone to have any unmanagable battery issues either, I just make sure I carry a spare charged battery around with me in case I have a day of intense phone usage and I'd expect iPhone owners who anticipate using their phone a lot to take the same precaution, nothing worse than getting caught out with a flat phone.

can't wait to see how good you are at acting suprised.

The one barrier remaining for me buying one left has been the unknown cost of unlimited data/messaging service. I am still waiting for that iPhone specific plan to pop up, but if it's at AT&T's current unlimited data+messaging pricing, it's a definite no.

No flash and no Java are both really disappointing though, IMO. Looks more and more likely I will wait it out for Rev. 2 (or 3).

My 2nd Gen iPod Nano gets pretty damn close to the battery life Apple says it will. And that's using it regularly with the Nike+ kit as well, so "laughably overblown" is probably not a statement that I'd agree to.

And I wasn't making a crack about the N95 battery life at all. My statement was based on the fact that the N95 has WiFi just like the iPhone (the other phones on the comparison chart do not) and that the N95 already has less battery life than the iPhone to being with. I wasn't even aware that were perceived issues with the N95 to get blown out of proportion.

And I remain with Nerbo. Waiting for the damn plans to be shown so I know how much it'll cost to feed this thing. It's the make or break issue for me at this point on whether I go with the iPhone or some other smartphone.

Well holy crap. iPhone's mystery app is YouTube. Hilarious.

Apple Press Release said:
YouTube Live on Apple TV Today; Coming to iPhone on June 29
Best YouTube Experience on a Mobile Device

CUPERTINO, California—June 20, 2007—Apple® today announced that iPhone™ users will be able to enjoy YouTube’s originally-created content on their iPhones when they begin shipping on June 29. A new Apple-designed application on iPhone will wirelessly stream YouTube’s content to iPhone over Wi-Fi or EDGE networks and play it on iPhone’s stunning 3.5 inch display.

In addition, Apple announced that YouTube is now live on Apple TV™. Users can download the free software update using Apple TV’s built-in software update feature, and then easily navigate through YouTube’s familiar video browsing categories or search for specific videos. YouTube members can also log-in to their YouTube accounts on Apple TV to view and save their favorite videos.

“iPhone delivers the best YouTube mobile experience by far,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Now users can enjoy YouTube wherever they are—on their iPhone, on their Mac or on a widescreen TV in their living room with Apple TV.”

To achieve higher video quality and longer battery life on mobile devices, YouTube has begun encoding their videos in the advanced H.264 format, and iPhone will be the first mobile device to use the H.264-encoded videos. Over 10,000 videos will be available on June 29, and YouTube will be adding more each week until their full catalog of videos is available in the H.264 format this fall.

The combination of H.264-encoded videos plus iPhone’s built-in Wi-Fi networking, stunning 3.5 inch display, and custom YouTube application with its multi-touch user interface results in the best YouTube experience on any mobile device.

BTW, Apple's iPhone site has been updated with new demo videos that include the YouTube feature. I also noticed that now when the demo shows typing on the keyboard it shows using two fingers to type (I'm guessing, thumbs?). Excellent.

I'm still surprised they haven't really said jack about the camera or demonstrated it. I *almost* think there's something up with that, too, like automatic uploading to a Flickr account or .Mac. That would be very nice. But we haven't seen much of what the buttons for camera, notes or settings offer up.

And I'm wondering what the ringtone options will be. Cell phone carriers in general want to sell you theirs for limited use, but I wouldn't be surprised if you can sidestep this and use your music library or maybe buy tones off iTunes.

I wouldn't be shocked if their were tones on iTunes, however, they'd have a hard time selling $1 tones along side full clips of the songs. Plus, there are plenty of other phones out there that let you use .mp3 files for tones as long as t hey aren't too large. I'm hoping that's howt hey go, but we'll have to see.

I'm guessing, like a lot of Apple products, there are some very nice things that will be left to be discovered when the product ships.

Most of these are cases, and are just awful. That arm band is crazy. The iPhone would be too large for me to run with (I have a Nano) and I wouldn't want it on my arm when I'm mountain biking. I'm sure I'd smash it! :lol

jeez. That's look all bulky and shit.

Also, what's up with the center aligned posts on that forum. I don't know if I'm reading signatures of posts.

Engadget is reporting that there is a place on the dock to charge the bluetooth headset as well, which would be pretty cool. They also seem to indicate that the dock is not included in the box with the phone, which is counter to what has been said in this thread. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

All those cases look like crap to me. Here you have an elegant new piece of technology...let's put it in the worst looking case imaginable. I'm guessing Apple will have a case of their own, which will be expensive and (probably) not worth it. I think I'm gonna go no case, just like I have for both iPods I've owned.

I agree that the cases all look awful. But I'll likely need something to carry it around in. I don't like having something that size in my pockets and I usually have my current phone hooked on my belt when I'm out and about. I'm going to need something, just not digging these choices so far.

I do have a Nike armband for when I run with my iPod, but other than that, it just goes into my pocket.

Data plan rumors from MacRumors.com:

Unconfirmed but potentially true tidbits coming down the line:

The data plan for the iPhone will be "required" but may be canceled online after the sale. Meanwhile, Apple Stores will only be selling the iPhone itself but have nothing to do with cellular service activation itself. Instead, this will go through an automated service through AT&T.

Also, info this Friday??

We've received reports that more promotional materials and possibly data plan information will come this Friday at local Apple Stores. Meanwhile, we have received conflicting reports from various local AT&T stores, so it seems clear that none of the local AT&T store staff have any official information on iPhone sales or data plans.

You obviously haven't seen an iPhone IRL, which is understandable if you weren't at MacWorld. The thing is freaking tiny. It can easily be substituted for an original iPod on the arm or in the pocket.

Edit: I'll be using an iSock with my iPhone. Eff those ugly cases.

Damn just browsed through the updated iPhone page on apple's site and watched the demos.. Im not easily impressed, but damn. All the posts of 'iPhone doesnt compare to this random device' etc etc are so laughable. WHen will people understand that its not the individual features that count, but how they work together and the interface that ties them.

It is actually kind of amazing; wait until you see the video quality (if you have an Apple TV you have a nice preview.) You will probably stop watching Youtube on your computer.

Half credit because you didn't pay for them, but they're still the ultimate test of intelligence among iPod owners.
No? It's a great case for people who don't want something made out of anything other than soft material. I would have bought them even if my dad didn't give them to me.

I learned long ago that women can be overwhelmed when it comes to technology. They'd pay twice as much for something because it's pink or cute, but works the exact same. You'll learn to accept it.
Please don't ban me, Dragona. :(

Here's a great new ad.

Please don't tell me you actually bought an iSock...

Ya know, even though my DS screen can get very smudgy, it's never once impeded me from playing a game on it or seeing what's going on. Maybe I'm not as anal about that stuff as others, but the only way around smudges is to not buy devices that require you touch it to use it.

I'm just wondering why people pay a premium for an iSock when they're cheaper than dirt at any flea market.

Or is it made out of special Apple-branded cotton that's patented in 100 countries and at least two planets?

If you actually see a set of iPod socks, you'll understand why people like them. They are soft and stretchy, you can fit a lot of gizmos in them and keep them safe. With that said, they're only really useful if you're a girl and keep something like your phone or iPod in your purse. For guys, putting something in a sock and then in a pocket... it's just kinda dumb in my opinion. Also, they are overpriced. If they were $10, maybe even $15 would be a better price. $30 (that's the price right?) for six socks is absurd. I mean... $5 each?

Look, a sock of any stripe isn't going to keep any piece of electronics "safe". Warm on a chilly day? Sure, but at the most it'll just prevent a little bit of scratching. And again, any sock will accomplish the same task.

Stop caring. I find them to be a great purchase and a competent case to carry my 80 gig. It doesn't work for you. Great. I love them.

What the ****.

Look: I would buy them anyway. I like them. End of story.

Thats why I specifically said "earlier iPods". Your 2nd gen Nano is like at least an 8th revision of the original.

And I expect anybody mad enough to buy "iSocks" has a pre-order on the iPhone already, regardless of the specs.

"But.. but.. it's not a regular sock, it's an iSock!" :lol

This is the Internet, you know how it works:
We argue back and forth until one of us conveniently has to go to bed.

because protecting the future in your hands requires a lot of money.

Ahh...I see. And I'm sure Apple hasn't learned anything in all those iPod revisions that they can pass on to the iPhone to help with battery life.

How will the Youtube videos work? "10,000 videos at launch"? Doesn't it have an internet browser?

Sorry, I haven't been following this thing.

Yes, it has an Internet browser, and a separate YouTube app for playing the videos.

typhonsentra said:
But why only a set number of videos working at launch? I don't get that.

They're converting all the exiting videos to h.264 and all knew ones that are uploaded as well. This will allow YouTube to work on AppleTV and iPhone.
