I like how this close to a product launch we still have no idea what the initial shipment will be outside of the rumors from BusinessWeek. And no idea how many units stores will be getting (I guess that's Apple secrecy for ya.) AT&T expects the launch to be big, and rightly so, but is this too much prep and hoopla for a device that's $500/600?

I hope this goes smoother than most recent console launches. It'd be nice to be able to get a product on launch day without having to line up for 12+ hours.

i think it looks great visually but in my opinion its still overhyped as hell, its a cell phone with a built in ipod and a few other things. big deal. i can't wait to see how inflated the australian price will be.

Someone over at Howard Forums broke it down like this. If they only ship 500,000 iPhones to stores, each store will get 250 iPhones. Seems like quite a lot of phones if you ask me. Obviously some stores will have more than others, but this is so different from a console launch. I expect there to be some lines, but I don't think it's going to be too crazy, and I also think everyone who wants one on launch day will get one.

I doubt anyone who wants one will have problems getting one on Friday. I intend to go to the 5th Ave. Apple Store no earlier than 5pm. I'm sure they're going to have a ridiculous number of units on hand.

Bleh, I don't know how anything can be claimed as a "video player" and not support DivX these days. Seriously, it's the MP3 of video.

So PSP, PS3, 360 and iPods... those aren't "video players"? :P

I believe they should all be qualified as "somewhat annoying video players that require me to convert my media".

Thanks for the programs and this would be the most reasonable day now to give us for the plan since it at least gives us a week to think about the plans.

Damn, I hope they give us the plans today. I'm tired of waiting to decide if I'm going to hop onboard or not. We're only five days from launch now, and it's still not clear what it's going to run us per month.

No ****. Site's back up, no iPhone plan info. False alarm. I guess it's not like the Apple Store where you know when the site goes down that new crap is coming.

Boy Genius is reporting that their sources are telling them that the "iPlan" for data is going to cost between $35-$45 and will include unlimited (EDGE) data and 2000 to unlimited text messages.

Still a rumor of course, and not all that specific, but I'd take Unlimited Data and 2000 text messages for $35. Anything more than that and I'll have to think about it honestly.

I really think an iPhone "Nano" would be awesome. iPod Nano size, touch-screen, stripped features but retains 2GB for music and widescreen video.

I want.

The screen would be too small for any practical use honestly. Although I can see a smaller iPhone coming. Say the size of the current video iPod.

sidekick and blackberry owners are paying $20-30 for unlimited data and text. att should be able to match that. then again, why should they? they can probably charge $40 for the "iPlan" plus a voice plan and the masses will pay for it.

I would love for the data plan to fall in line with the sidekick. Blackberry owners, at least on AT&T aren't getting their plans that cheap though. A $30 data plan with some text messages included would get me to jump in for sure.

I had a Helio Ocean in my hands over the weekend, and it's my second choice if I don't get the iPhone. It's plan is $65 a month including 500 voice minutes and unlimited data, texting, MMS, and so on. That's a damn good deal, and I'd like to see the iPhone at least competitive with that.

I would think (hope) that AT&T would need to make the plans for this competitive. If the iPhone makes a big splash you can bet other carriers will be doing some verrrrry nice packages in order to get attention away from the iPhone. They're scared spitless and you can bet they're gonna do anything they can to keep customers. If AT&T doesn't come out swinging in that regard the iPhone fervor will cool off pretty quick. You can be cocky when it comes to the higher price of the phone itself, but not so much on plans. I would think.

The Ocean does look pretty awesome. If for some reason I don't go with the iPhone (unlikely, but still possible) it'd be a contender for sure.

I'm already spoiled paying $20 for Media MAX which is unlimited internet and 500 or so text messages. Fine for me since I barely text.

If I have to pay more than that I might have to think about it as $20 is already the limit I want to pay for data. Hell, I think paying $40 for 450 minutes is a rip off.

Now that I think about it, why the hell are wireless plans so expensive? Does it really take that much money to maintain the cell towers and to pay all their employees?

That would be a fine plan for me as well, as I don't text a lot either, although I think I would use it more with a phone like the iPhone. I've been hoping that the "iPlan" would run in the $20-$30 price range for some time, but it doesn't sound like that's going to be the case. I won't worry too much until the plan is official, but it would be great if it was super competitive.

I was wrong about the Ocean not requiring a contract. It does if you want the reduced price of the phone.

Yeah. $295 with contract, which doesn't bother me. $450 I believe without contract, so not a huge difference in price.

So if you buy your iPhone at an Apple store, do you have to then take it to the AT&T store to set up your account, or do they do that through the Apple store?

Rumor has it that you can activate it online. I'm guessing that someone at the Apple Store will activate it for you though.

Umm, a 50% increase in price is not a 'huge difference'?

I've seen phones that cost far more than that when you don't get them subsidized. $150 doesn't seem like all that much comparatively speaking.

Roll on Friday, I want to know what the situation is for the phone outside the US.

How it's activated, will it be SIM-locked / network-locked (likely), can it be got round, will it self-destruct if you try to use it on a network with conventional voicemail ...

Looking forward to the guineapig reports :)

Just curious.... do you encode all your 'media' to divx yourself?

A great majority of the TV episode torrents out there are in DivX format. In the rare instances that I'm encoding stuff, yeah, I'm generally using their codec.

If it weren't sim locked I would be first in line to buy it, I have at least 3 different sims from 3 different regions.

Chances are low of that happening however.

And edge and 2mp camera would be a step backward from what I have right now.

I'm sure this is part of the reason why the iPhone, iPod, PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, etc. do not support divx.

I guess this is what I am getting at...

... it's not that hard to convert your videos (especially tv files from torrents) to another format without that much loss in video quality. If the video quality is what you are after then you really shouldn't be downloading divx files anyway.... DVD and all that jazz.

You're comparing apples and oranges, one is a need, the other a want.
