I think what he means is that one is of actual practical use - you have it on you most times, for most of the functions it provides (communication, portable music etc). The other is primarily a conduit for playing games in your free time. One is a tool the other is a luxury.

Gizmodo just put up an interview with the first guys (well, really just one of them) in line for the iPhone in NYC. All I can say after watching that vid is... what a pair of LOSERS.

Anyway, if they ship enough of them (and by all indications, they are) there's no need to get in line this damn early.

Also, some of the things Sprint's doing to keep customers have been posted online --

----

* "Using the iPhone on the GSM/EDGE network may be like having a really powerful computer on dial up."
* "Whether you want music, email, web surfing or business files, our phones will download everything faster."
* "Concerned about coverage? I think you’ll see that we are comparable or better than all other carriers. Let me show you the map on our Power Network Coverage Tool to verify your coverage area."
* "We have many handsets that are MP3 players."
* "You want to have music with your phone? Let me show you the new Upstage or the Fusic II."
* "Any music phone from Sprint lets you download songs instantly – out of thin air."
* "Are you sure 4G or 8G is enough storage for you? To give you a comparison, most iPods/MP3 players hold 40 to 60Gigs or more."
* "The Upstage takes external mini-disks for unlimited storage."
* "Sure we have less expensive phones than the iPhone. The MotoQ, for example, is only $79 and is an MP3 player, PDA, camera, mobile internet device, and of course, a phone."
* "Most current Smartphones have secure email necessary for business functionality. "
* "The iPhone uses Yahoo and Mac email which is not secure. "
* "[iPhone] has a non-replaceable battery. "
* "[iPhone] offers no external storage. "
* "The iPhone is an Apple product and has some nice features. It also has a nice price. Do you really need all those features in one device?"

What, no "don't leave, we'll give you a better plan! Stay! Stay!" yet?

From Macworld's site and Your Mac Life host Shawn King:

"AT&T will announce, on Thursday or Friday, that unlimited data plans for the iPhone will be $19.95/month."

Huh I thought it was already set at $35?

One site was claiming they'd be between $34.99-44.99 and that got picked up as a juicy rumor. This is another rumor. There is no official plan information at this point, so nothing is "set." Though the Your Mac Life guy seems very sure of this.

Assuming that anything associated with Apple is going to be reasonably priced (much-less bargain priced) is setting yourself up for a huge disappointment. :lol

Reminds me of when Kevin Rose got everyone's hopes up by saying iPhone would be $250. Then a few weeks later they pull a Kaz.

All I hear is AT&T commericals lately so perhaps their trying to get the name out again?

Cingular is the new AT&T: "All round the worlddddddd"

This is true. Until I see the pricing on AT&T or Apple's sites I'm not gonna believe one way or the other. Having been part of the "media" before I know that you can have a trusted source that's talkin' bull****, too. But it's sure gonna be interesting to see what they land at.

So... quick poll? Who is actually planning on getting an iPhone on Friday? I'm going to take a crack at it provided we're not looking at a Wii campout type situation, although I suspect that may well be the case.

On another gaming board I frequent, filled with gadgetheads, there's a remarkably low level of interest - I think I'm one of only two people on the entire board planning to get one at launch. So how about over here?

If there were some sort of contest to win an iPhone, I would try very, very hard to win it. But I'm not actually gonna throw down $600 on that thing.

No a glowing endorsement, but if there were a contest to win a PS3 or something I wouldn't even bother. So I guess that says something.

*raises hand* Me. Though I dunno where I'm gonna get it. I'm gonna be out of town on Friday so it's either...cab it to an Apple Store near where I'll be, or order online and have it waiting for me when I get home. I'm hoping there will not be a Wii campout type of situation because I AM GODDAMN SICK OF THAT ****. Here's to hoping Apple will be the first in a while to launch a high-demand tech product that actually satisfies most of it on day one without forcing people to camp for hours.

Im pretty sure that I am going to get it on Friday unless the data plan is too expensive. My contract with T-Mobile ran out last month and one of the reasons I am probably going to get it is that I get a 19% discount of my monthly bill on any cingular/att line. I think I also get some sort of discount on the phone itself but I am not positive. Just one of the benefits of working at ESPN Zone, which happens to be owned by Disney :D

No discounts will apply to the iphone or plans associated with the iphone.

I figured there would be no discounts on the phone itself but I still think I get a discount on the regular cingular plan but probably not on the iphone data plan. I am going to call cingular to find out for sure.

I'm getting one. Sold my PSP and my old iPod to fund it. Unfortunately I think we may have another PS3 situation this time--but worse. PS3 nobody really wanted but all the eBay resellers thought there would be a huge demand, and so all a majority of the supply was bought and re-sold to the consumers that actually wanted one (whether it happened in that first week or two or several months later, who knows).

This time, you have the same knuckleheads who want to turn a quick profit, AND lots of people who actually want one. Unless Apple ships several million of these devices (think of not just the Apple stores but all the AT&T/Cingular kiosks and stores too that they have to supply), I doubt I'll be able to waltz in Friday after work and get one.

How do you re-sell an iPhone *and* the two-year contract? Is it possible to transfer the account holder after sale? It's an awful to get stuck with if you can't re-sell it.

Personally I hope Apple's resupply is excellent and those flipper f*cks get stuck with their unwanted units/contracts.

I'm planning on getting one depending on the price of the data plan. $35 is on the high end of what I'd pay for the plan. If it really is $20 I'm all over it. But right now, I'm certainly leaning towards getting the iPhone. I'm long over due for a new phone anyway.

To be fair, most of those are valid points.

Well, allegedly only AT&T corporate-owned stores are getting iPhones on Friday. No kiosks or resellers. No idea how they'll handle that *after* the 29th, but there ya go. And I hope hope hope Apple has you tie the phone to your iTunes account at the point of purchase. If they don't then I'd expect MANY ebay opportunists (unfortunately). In that event I just hope they can refill the supply chain quick enough to crush that ebay market fast.

Honestly, I'm not sure that there is going to be that much of an eBay market. You are not going to be able to buy the phone without committing to a 2 year contract, and it's going to cost $175 to get out of that contract, so the eBayer is going to have to make at least $775 just to break even. And if reports are correct, there is going to be plenty of stock, so I think anyone thinking about buying one for eBay may be in for surprise.

It all depends on how the transactions go. If they're activating you in-store, then you're right -- ebay opportunists hopefully will be minimal just 'cuz it wouldn't be worth it to bother. You'd have to buy, cancel (and take a $175 hit), and resell at near $1,000 to make it worth it. And if stores are well-stocked...then what's the point. But if they're just selling the phone at $499/599 for complete activation at home via iTunes...then look out.

True, but if there is plenty of stock, it won't matter either.

I *want* there to be plenty of stock and it *seems* like there will be plenty of stock, but then that's what the Wii situation looked like before launch, too.

So, who knows? How difficult has it been to get, say, the latest-generation iPod at launch in the past? I remember the Apple Store here in SF being mobbed on the morning that the 5Gs came out. And the iPhone strikes me as hotter and more hyped than any iPod (hell, Apple) product has ever been.

My most recent experience: tried to find a 15" MacBook Pro last week, not a single store in the Bay Area had any in stock. Had to order online instead.

In the bay area...I'd say you're boned. Demand is gonna be very high everywhere, but you're in the tech/gadget center of the universe. Even if there were no eBayers, you may be better off just sitting back and ordering off Apple's website once they put it up there (a very important and NICE difference between how Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo launch a console). Then the only waiting you have to do is from the comfort of your own home. I mean unless the reports are that the SF store is going to have a ton of them. But I dunno that we'll know how many units anyone's getting, another difference in how Apple launches a product versus Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo. :D

Yes I'm sure it's going to be grim. I won't be going anywhere near the big downtown store; that's sure to be a nightmare. I think the chances may be slightly better at the other SF store (Stonestown Galleria) which is smaller but more out-of-the-way, or at an AT&T store.

I'm gaming out how long I'm willing to camp. Since it's a 6pm launch on Friday overnight is *NOT* an option. I'll check out the locations on Friday morning and see what's what, I guess.

shouldnt u all be waiting til all the problems are ironed out and a more improved, larger sized iphone arrives? seems silly to get stuck with the 1st generation iphone when a much better version is sure to come.

Well, OK. But then why buy any piece of new technology ever? (Including launch consoles.)

According to some stuff that I read at work (TMobile), you won't be able to get sim unlock codes for the phones for two years. Assuming I'm remembering correctly.

i heard 100-200 phones per store, sound about right? im not sure if i should go camping out out here in laguna.

Over the past two weeks I've gone from

1) Not buying it but interested in reading about it
2) Kind of interested and looking at it but still not going to buy it
3) Man I'm tempted but I like my current phone + cheap data plan
4) I guess I could sell off my phone, buy the iPhone and sell the iPhone if I don't like it to get another phone in the future...
5) Shit, I'm buying an iPhone. Life's too short.

I'm going to wait for reviews first on this bad boy but if they're all generally positive, this little device is mine.

SuperPac said:

If I had waited a few months to buy a brand new MacBook Pro, mine probably wouldn't have had to gone in for repairs 5 times.

so in the past I was told I'd need to put down something like 600 dollars if I wanted to sign up for a plan. Will I need to do that with this? I sure hope not since I'll be putting out over 500 for the phone alone.

With how many posts you have in this damn thread, you better be getting one. :-/

Yup its always a catch 22 with new apple. Do you want to look like a cool Apple user for the first 6 months before update/upgrade, or a bandwagon late adopter. Its all about impressing nerds.

I think it'll be hard for them to do a significant upgrade since America is stuck in 2.5G cellular service. So when the iPhone launches in Korea and Japan next year will those markets accept a 2.5G phone when 4G phones and networks will be up. Unlikely. But it will be interesting to see a 4G or 3.5G upgrade.

as far as i know HSDPA(3.5G) is big in the U.S, so i don't understand why the iPhone is lacking HSDPA, which offers speeds up to 2Mbps, 3Mbps and 7Mbp

Yes I know, but guess which network is the biggest.

AT&T, Apple launch three service plans for iPhone

June 26 (Reuters) - Apple Inc. (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile , Research) and AT&T Inc. (T.N: Quote, Profile , Research) said they will launch three service plans for iPhone, which is scheduled to be launched on June 29, starting at $59.99 per month.

The plans include unlimited data, visual voicemail, 200 SMS text messages, roll-over minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, the companies said in a joint statement. (Reporting by Anup Roy in Bangalore)
