Meanwhile, unconfirmed Think Secret reports suggest that while three million iPhones are said to have been manufactured ahead of Friday's launch, Apple will only release about one million into the channel this week, staggering product availability availability beyond that to avoid any perceived major shortages.

1 million for somewhere around 2100 stores. Excellent.

The only things that are still bothering me are both AT&T related. One is the piss-poor EDGE network, we all know how bad that is.

The other is the apparently also very poor AT&T coverage. I keep hearing how bad their network is, even though they're always running those ads about how Cingular has the fewest dropped calls.

Can any existing AT&T/Cingular mobile users share their experience with the network? Currently I am a T-Mobile customer.
from my friends that use T-mobile I can definitely say that AT&T is way better in coverage and signal strength.

So apparently Steve Jobs just had a company wide meeting and everyone in Apple receives a free 8gb iPhone. Can someone confirm this? If so, WHY DIDN'T I GO WORK FOR APPLE >:(

<-- works at Intel instead.......
To quote a text message I just received from my sister: "**** yeah! We all getting iPhones."

****, I wonder if the full time retail people (Geniuses, managers) get one too. If so I almost regret quitting, although my dignity and sense of self worth rate slightly higher than iPhone. Slightly.

That's awesome... I'd be lying if I didn't say I was jealous, though. :)
I'm jealous, too! The earliest I'd get one would be the end of the year, and now my sister and brother-in-law will be using theirs all the time and giving me tech-envy.

I've had cingular for the past year, and haven't had any dropped calls, and I also get 3 to 4 bars of service in my basement.

The ArsTechnica article says that all full-time and part-time Apple employees who've been working for Apple one year or more are eligible for the free iPhone. This includes folks working at retail locations.

It's settled GAF, I'm getting an iPhone. Check out these facts here.

Regular AT&T FamilyTalk Plan starting at $60/month for two lines. Additional lines = $9.99/month.

iPhone FamilyTalk Plan starting at $109.99/month for two lines. Additional lines = $29.99/month

Q. Can I add iPhone to a FamilyTalk plan?
A. Yes. Just go to an AT&T retail store, and mention you'd like to add a line to an existing account.

Q. Do I need to switch to a different FamilyTalk rate plan if I want to add iPhone?
A. No. You might want to upgrade your minutes since you are adding an additional line.

So, by this logic, you can add an iPhone on to an existing FamilyTalk plan. My guess would be, based on the numbers above, that it will cost $29.99/month to add an iPhone.

Here's the crux. My parents on the verge of switching to a new cell carrier. They have no contract obligations with T-Mobile and haven't for years. They are sick of T-Mobile's shit coverage at their house. I am currently on their family plan with T-Mobile.

They will switch to AT&T and get a FamilyTalk plan for however many minutes. I will pay them the additional $30/month to add an iPhone on to their plan, thereby cutting the cost of my iPhone plan in half! Oh god I'm excited.

The only X-factor is the data and sms messages. I would assume that since an extra line is $9.99 for any other phone, and the iPhone Data Plan is $19.99 (unlimited data, 200 sms) for existing customers, that is how they arrived at the $29.99 price to add an iPhone to a FamilyTalk plan. This will require further clarification from AT&T though...

How far down the ranks does this extend? I mean, do the cafeteria guys get one? Regardless, awesome gesture from the higher-ups.

Everyone.

Of course, the cafeteria is contracted out to an outside vendor(although very, very good), as is the cleaning crew.

Consultants or contracted work don't get any. Well, a very few do, but they've got a pretty large group of folks who don't officially work for them.

The Apple store folks all qualify.

Lines are forming around the houston area apple stores. I saw it on the news. What the hell do these people think they are buying?

In Houston? They'll be lucky if they don't melt, get shot, drown in rain, or get plowed into by some oblivious driver in their F350.

Don't you live in Houston, CJ? :D

Go to an AT&T store in the suburbs!

Can't freakin wait! And I can't wait to watch the Diggnation since it should be all sorts of craziness! Going to wait tomorrow around 1 probably. Will take pics of wait and craziness. (Going to popular Apple store(First Apple store in South Florida, or should I go to the one that just opened a couple months ago...). Yeah, I know. Crazy.

Please tell me you have the camera for the 360, that'd be the perfect demonstration. Yeah, maybe I will buy it some time after I get back. To be honest with you, I want to buy a Mac Book or MBP in Oct. Plus I need to save some money for a Gixxer. :D

I do. I'd be happy to do a video chat to show you tomorrow night after I get mine.

Silence, lest I send our baseball team to your area to stink up the place.

Thanks, cowboy.

BTW, word on the street is that EDGE speeds have increased dramatically within the past few hours (lots of people are reporting a full 100% increase). This keeps getting better and better.

Doesnt matter. Everyone whose been bitching about the iphone will find something else to rag about. Like how you cant type 5000 words per minute.

I do, but unfortunately I'm not in Houston at the moment. :'( Do people just not know about the healthy supply? Or are these not ebayers that are lining up?

I wish that were true for me. I live in the northern new jersey area. I'm getting 8kbps, i hate edge to ****ing death!

if that's accurate, i don't see what everyone is complaining about.

Well, the killer is the latency. 900ms is actually the worst I've ever gotten. That might be because I'm out in the boonies right now though.

That must suck if you're in a store that hasn't been open for very long.

As I understand it, Apple stores have a lot of part time employees. Imagine if you're part timer who has been in a store open less than a year....while everyone else is geting iPhones.

That would suck ass.

Woh, pretty amazing increase. What the **** happened... Did Apple somehow make it over 4 times as fast? How the hell did this happen!?

I personally have been seeing speeds like this since November of last year (when I signed on with Cingular). A lot of the FUD surrounding EDGE is because of the following:

1) Bad coverage by AT&T
2) Free phones that have lower class EDGE components

It's pretty much hit and miss around the country but it's nice to read reports that people are seeing the same speeds I am though. Again, the latency is killer so even with decent EDGE speeds, it still takes awhile for things to load.

But wasn't the down speed always around 40 kbs before? I mean now it's in the 190-200 range. I never heard it ever be that high.

And if it is according to location on AT&T service, thats awesome since they actually have amazing coverage where I am in South Florida.

We're talking the same kbps right? Kilobits per second, not kilobytes? 40 kilobits per second is even worse than dial up.

ah I love speed tests!

this is on At&T at my house (signal is not the best):

and on my 'real' connection:

hmm I hope the wifi hotspot searching is good :P

Awesome news on speed bumps all over the place for EDGE. Every little bit helps. I'm looking forward to finally getting my hands on the iPhone later today.

Oh, and one of the reviews said that WiFi hotspot finding was very good. As it in, the phone will automatically join hotspots that you configure it for, and will auto-detect new ones in different areas as you travel about.

Everyone in line already?

I think my play is that...I'm gonna go to the AT&T store near my hotel, see what the situation is. The Apple store "nearby" is like 20 miles away, and an expensive cab ride. So I don't think I'm gonna do that unless I really have to. AT&T store... 4 miles away. Let's hope they have enough stock.

What city are you in?

Man it aint looking good for me. I can't get in line till 330. I call around to 4 att stores and all for of them confirmed to me less then 100 total units for sale today. And most likely less then half will be 8gb's. This sucks. This is the northern jersey area by the way.

edit: I never freaking understand why they can't just tell you what you have in stock so you can plan your trip accordingly. What the hell??? od they think that by making people belive they can get one they can trick them into buying something else once they run out?? damned retards.

I'm not going to the store until around 5 PM. I'll scope out the area and go from there. There are several AT&T stores within a fairly short drive, so I'll see what's happening at each of them, but I honestly don't think it's going to be that bad outside of the large Apple stores really.

It could easily be PSP launch all over again. Brisk sales, nice buzz, but plenty of product to go around.

I'll check the ATT/Cingular store near my work in Newport Beach to see how it is before I go in. Then I'll probably scope it out around lunch time to see if it looks like I still have a shot. Let's see how it turns out...

Edge didn't get any speed "bumps," just so you all know. The network's capacity is what it is, and is unchangeable.

If there's been a perceived speed increase, it CERTAINLY wasn't Apple's doing. Even speculating that it might have been is laughable.

I assume you work for AT&T, right? :)

You have NO CLUE the amount of influence that Apple has on AT&T right now. Going by public documentation, AT&T has poured a lot of money into every facet of its networks to prepare for the iPhone launch.

It looks like you have a lot of options, though I'm not sure where your hotel is. This is a pretty big market for AT&T so I'm sure you'll have good luck today. To get through the IVR and actually speak to someone, press 2 for wireless sales when you call the store.
