I think e-bayers are probably taking a bath on the iPhone. Word is that most Apple Stores still have some in stock, even if they are 4GB models, and the wait isn't going to be that long to get one. Even if they are selling on ebay, the seller isn't making much on them, especially considering how long they had to stand in line to get one.

Speaking of which 4GB is not enough memory for this device. You would constantly be pushing against that limit, and video in particular would be impractical unless you were willing to cut your song selection down to a few hundred.

Yeah, I went to the ATT store planning to get a 4GB, but by 6 PM, I thought about that and decided on the 8GB.

Quick question.

My contract doesn't expire until April, it'll cost $200 to cancel... I saw someone ask if AT&T will cover your cancellation fee if you switch to them, has that been answered?

Has it been publicized how long AT&T will retain an exclusive? I assume not, but I do eventually want one, but am under contract for another year-and-a-half.

I heard on the radio that it is a 5 year deal.

ooo it looks like if you fail the credit check you can go pay as you go...

A prepaid iPhone sounds like a great idea in theory, if for no other reason than the fact that "prepaid" sounds like "no contract" if you listen really carefully. Indeed, AT&T's offering iPhones on its GoPhone prepaid service, but if -- and only if -- the buyer first fails a credit check. Who the heck has ever heard of bad credit being a prerequisite for an awesome option? Anyway, we're hearing reports that a Social Security number of 999-99-9999 will automatically fail the credit check and hook you up with the GoPhone option. We'd try it ourselves, but we're plumb out of unactivated iPhones -- so do let us know what happens if you try it, k?

Nah, I didn't think you made it up. I just wanted to see the comments to see if it actually works.

Do you have any evidence of this or are you just making things up?

Unlike video game consoles, phones are typically profitable to manufacture from day one and it turns out that the iPhone is no exception -- far from it, in fact. Teardown specialists at Portelligent claim that the 4GB iPhone runs Apple just $200 worth of components, while the 8GB adds an extra $20, not far off at all from iSuppli's slightly higher estimates from January. Granted those tallies don't include the actual cost of assembling the device -- but even so, those numbers are very far cries from the $500 and $600 asking prices at the register, leaving a healthy $299 and $379 respectively (of which an overwhelming majority are $379) for profit and miscellaneous costs. Interestingly, Portelligent's unceremonious destruction of an iPhone in the name of research revealed no further proof that Hon Hai / Foxconn is the ODM responsible for assembling the darned thing.

Uhhh... What? A single iTunes movie (The Incredibles, 1 hour 55 minutes long) takes up about 1.3 GB on my iPhone. The phone's OS and file system eat up about 700MB. There's half your memory gone. That leaves room for maybe 500 songs, with nothing at all left for photos, emails, calendar data, browser cookies and other miscellany. Or cut your music selection down further and give yourself a little breathing room for the rest of the phone's functionality. A second movie or even a TV episode would be out of the question.

fake? :( but I have bad credit can I still get service?

if you enter you social security number as all 9's and proceed with the activation you will be put on the pay as you go service, so now no 2year plan(?).

I couldn't live without it. Here's what I've got currently on my 8GB according to the About screen:

Songs: 1126
Videos: 23
Photos: 200
Available: 509MB

One of those videos is the feature film "War of the Worlds". Another is a 24 minute TV show. The rest are podcast videos and music videos. I also have two unabridged audiobooks and about 40 contacts.

are you confirming the report? or just asking?

I know I have bad credit so I'll have to pay the security deposit if I want this service
otherwise if this report is true I may be saved so I need to know

semi confirming it, :lol

it all came from a blog post yesterday where a guy spoke to experienced AT&T rep and they explained the that a work around was to enter all 9's as a social security number, this would then fail the credit check and give him a pre-paid service, which he did.

This was on Digg this morning and I was having a read, now I cant find it at all.

These plans suck...just get the contract...it's not like you're going to stop using the iPhone or feel a need to not have a cell phone within 2 years.

I have $600 in the bank right now. If I didn't need to put it towards something else more urgent, I would have got this biotch (seeing as I need a Cell and I don't own a full blown MP3 player. Just a shuffle).

A helpful tip I noticed for anyone having issues with using the keyboard. It doesn't actually type in the character until after you release the key, and as long as you are touching the screen, you can move your finger around to select the proper character you are looking for before you release it.

So, if you're trying to type "A" and you accidently hit "S", when you see the "S" magnified, simply slide your finger over to the "A" and then release it. It makes things a bit slower at first as you have to tap and hold the screen to see which letter pops up, but it makes for more accurate typing much more quickly and will probably increase your speed and accuracy in general over time.

As for me, so far I'm finding the keyboard easier to use than I thought I would.

I use a Blackberry all day, every day, and I had a bitch of a time typing with it at the store despite my smallish hands, but I only tried it for 20 minutes. It's too bad there's no landscape option on the initial release, but it's good to know that you can hold your finger down and move it to the correct letter.

Also, has there been any word on this working with corporate email servers? As far as I know, it's not even working with AT&T itself at this moment.

There is a landscape option, in Safari at least. If you're viewing the web in landscape view when you click a text box a larger version of the soft keyboard fit to the widescreen ratio will appear.

Landscape is in there, but it only works in the apps that have a landscape mode. i.e. the browser.

Gonna snag one tonight.

What is the good word on accessories for this sexy beast? Thinking of getting a clear clamshell for the device similar to the plastic contour shell I have for my video ipod.

Anything else to consider?

oh, one word about old ipod docks.

my friend has an ipod control built into his radio and my GF has a itrip (FM transceiver) neither of them worked with my iphone! I was able to get power to charge the phone from these but no music! I hope something comes out soon because I want to rock my car out!

You may need a headphone adapter if your favorite brand of ear buds or headphones don't have a long stem on them. I tried all of mine over the weekend and they all worked fine, but others are reporting issues.

Other than that, the only thing I picked up was the case I posted a few pages back. The phone is more durable than most people expected, so I think it's easy to throw it in your pocket without too much worry, but I wanted a decent case to wear around when the need arises. I've been very happy with using it for the first time today.

You can bet there will be tons of accessories for the iPhone. Most of the companies that make stuff for the iPod are already on board, and there will be more to come I'm sure. I'd venture to guess you may see more accessories for the iPhone than any other phone ever when it's all said and done.

The phone/calling screen isn't the same as the advertised screen in photos/commercials:

apple-iphone-call.jpg

They show a person's profile image in the small box in the top right, but on the actual iPhone, it uses the person's profile picture as the background.

I didn't see anything in the settings to switch between the two layouts or anything. Just something I noticed...

My iPhone looks just like the picture you posted when I'm on a call. The background is not the persons profile picture; it only shows that in a little box like in the screen shot you posted.

For someone from the future, you are too oblivious of the past. Unlike you guys, those who are right now driving the UMPC space has gone through many iPhone-esque devices already in the past and know to well the limitation of devices promise "teh internet" with a embedded CE device. The lesson learned over and over was that you can't have these limited capability CE device providing satisfying internet experience when the internet experience is defined on the full OS computers and is a constant moving target.

I personally went through Palm OS5 Clies with Wifi internet option 5 years ago (coincidently, the same resolution color screen as the iPhone @ 3.8" 320x480 transreflective LCD). There are tons of internet tablets that provide more full featured internet experience than the iPhone (Nokia n800 for instance, which has a 4.1" 800x480 color LCD allows for viewing flash websites).

The only new wrinkle the iPhone is adding to all this is that the web viewing for a phone is closer to the real web experience than what's already being offered for ages on the Windows Mobile smartphones. But they accomplish this by cramming a huge OS (OSX in the iPhone has a footprint that's around 700MBs! Compare that with your usual 32MB footprint for Windows Mobile phones) into a device with a processor that's not able to maximize it (iPhone uses ARM processor that can barely handle flash, just like the Nokia n800).

Eventually, many iPhone users will find the web experience on the iPhone to be too limiting and will be wanting to move up to a device that can give them the real web. And not too far off (months), you can have those devices for not much more money.

Oh and BTW, the great thing about UMPC platform is that you can have both the full computer experience (whether on the device or on the desktop via a docking station), or a tailored for on the go experience with launcher/wrappers for the OS like this.

It really is amazing how far ahead Sony were with their CLIE. Shame they left the scene, they really pushed PALM to the limit. First thing I though of with the iphone was my old TH55. More or less the same thing without a phone.

I don't think you get it. The iPhone is revolutionary more for the interface and convergence than the actual feature set, which isn't a whole lot different from what's out there. I never saw a CLIE (or a Palm) with an interface even remotely similar to the iPhone, but maybe I missed something...

How many of you have dead pixels on your iPhone? I've got one stuck pixel and another dead pixel, and I'm thinking about returning it...but I don't want another PSP situation where virtually every PSP had dead pixels.

They'll charge you 10% restocking fee if you return it.

sorry, should have clarified: exchange it. i won't be returning it. i don't think they charge a restocking fee for defective units.
