Orange have terrible coverage though. I'd prefer Vodaphone, but I'd be partly willing for O2.

Orange are the only UK network with EDGE.

If the phone doesn't go 3G, then it better be Orange. I don't want to even think about using an iPhone on GPRS.

I love my ***kin iPhone! Its frustrating typing this shit.....but I love it!

It definitely gets easier, I already find my speed picking up quite nicely and I've posted on GAF, done full e-mails, and more with it.

I have to say, I'm totally in love with the iPhone as well. On the way home from work tonight, I noticed traffic was coming to a standstill, but I couldn't tell what was going on. I pulled out the iPhone and checked traffic on the Google Maps app and saw that the road ahead was only "Yellow" and not "Red". So, rather than taking a longer route home, I stayed on course, and it turned out there was a strip of heavy rain coming down in one small area. Traffic moved briskly, and when we got through the rain, it went back to "Green" just like the Google Maps said. Very cool.

What do you press for traffic in Google Maps? I don't see it.

edit: nvrmind, the little car icon. that's ****ing awesome.

Very cool dude. Very cool indeed.

I'm practicing now.

Does the iPhone version of Google Maps display traffic in all roads or just highways? I got it on my phone, but it only displays traffic for highways. Furthermore, does it give you alternate routes in heavy traffic (the version in my phone also lacks this)?

I haven't zoomed down to the smaller streets to check, but it's most clearly evident on the major highways. I'm guessing this has less to do with the app you use, and more to do with the data that Google is providing. As more data becomes available for busier streets other than than highways, I'll bet we'll see that fed to any apps we use, iPhone or not.

And no, it won't suggest alternate routes, you'll need to use know them yourself, although if you drive off on a different route, you could easily use it to find your way to your destination anyway.

Over 1M iPhones sold (and activated)

http://www.waitingforiphone.com/2007/07/05/att-activates-over-1-million-iphones/

AT&T activates over 1M iPhones

According to reports leaked to waitingforiphone.com, ATT Mobility has fulfilled over 1 million iPhone activations since the device was launched in the US on June 29th. This news comes from a full-time staffer in ATT Mobilty’s Commerce Group who chose to remain anonymous. Wall Street analysists have placed initial iPhone sales between 500,000 - 750,000 units. First week sales of over 1 million would cement the iPhone as Apple’s fastest selling new product, and one of the hottest new technology gadgets in history.

Since the iPhone launch, ATT has come under some criticism for an inconsistant activation experience. A vocal group of iPhone purchasers have had to wait up to 3 days to get a fully functional iPhone. The home activation of a million handsets, a first for the cellular industry, would be a remarkable achievement despite the negative news.

“Apple has been a pain to work with,” the ATT source was quoted to say. “They were so secretive about the iPhone they only released the final activation API to us the day of the launch. Most people didn’t even know they were activating through ATT with iTunes and not through Apple.”

Rumor speculates that an announcement of European carrier(s) have been delayed until Apple confirms iPhone sales have past the 1 million mark. If true, the launch date for iPhone in the UK, Germany, and France could be announced as soon as today. Vodaphone, Orange Wireless, and O2 have all been rumored to be potential European partners.

Also of interest, a new rumor that a 3G capable iPhone may not be available for the initial European release would call into question the viability of the handset into more mature cellular markets and may raise new concerns about the industry’s network investment.

“If I’m a carrier right now, whether I’ve got the iPhone or not, I’m worried about my infrastructure,” an industry expert was overheard to say.

Uhhhh, didn't all but 2 Apple Stores sell out of them recently? That, plus the back order, likely puts the sales numbers a lot higher. Closer to 2 million, at least.

That's a way faster adoption rate than I predicted. Wow.

Kudos to Apple for satisfying initial demand. Console makers have a new standard to live up to.

seems like the apple stores are getting shipments daily (at least some of the ones around here). Store near me said sold out last night after 9 but I know they got some in today. Unfortunately when I called they only had 4gigs left so I'll just go try again tommorow, even though the retail site says they're all sold out

Finally posting this from my own iPhone. Snagged one today from the apple store in Sacramento. The website def doesn't take into account that apple gets more every day.

I had a lackluster first experience though . The one I bought had a broken wifi and I couldn't connect to any networks. Had to make a genius bar spot for later that afternoon to get a new iPhone. But after that it was all good. I'm still having sporadic wifi problems though.

Keyboard works great in safari landscape mode which is what I'm using right now. In regular mode though it's frustrating. Still trying to get used to this...

I'm pretty fast at single finger typing at this point, but I prefer landscape when I can get it, so I'm hoping that they release a software update to allow it in more applications

Doesn't Apple rape AT&T with their contract though? So 1 million is good...but for apple, and on some level AT&T

We don't know anything about the contract between Apple and AT&T. Saying that Apple is "raping" them is just wrong. The rumors leading up to the launch was that both compaines shared in the profits of selling the device, with most of that going to Apple, and that Apple got a bounty for every new customer that they signed up for AT&T. There is no evidence that Apple is getting any money from the service plans beyond speculation and rumors.

I got my first drop in today. Having the earbuds in broke the fall, and my iPhone is now scarred on the black plastic part. I'm actually glad it's over with!

Quit being a Mamma's Boy and go buy one already! ;)

Did we mention they're adding Flash to it in an update! :D

:lol It's just a question of when... It would have happened last Sat. if it wouldn't cost $200 to quit on Sprint.

I don't get how to buy an iPhone and use it with a new family plan I also want to sign up for on the same day as I buy the iPhone.

There seems to be no obvious way to do this on Cingular or Apple's site...

It's amazing that none of the details have leaked, but I would guess that Apple is making out better than Motorola, Samsung, RIM, Nokia, etc.

Apple issues battery program for iPhone
Replacements cost $79, $6.95 shipping, three business days
The Associated Press
Updated: 6:40 a.m. ET July 6, 2007
SAN JOSE, Calif. - A consumer advocacy group has expressed outrage over Apple Inc.'s battery replacement program for the iPhone, while developers and hackers are trying to figure out ways they could expand the capabilities of the hot new gadget.

The hybrid cell phone, iPod media player and wireless Web-browsing device launched to much fanfare on June 29.

On the same day, the Foundation for Consumer and Taxpayer Rights fired off a letter to Apple and AT&T Inc., the cell phone's exclusive carrier, complaining that customers were being left in the dark about the procedure and cost of replacing the gadget's battery.

The iPhone's battery is apparently soldered on inside the device and cannot be swapped out by the owner like most other cell phones.

Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Hakes said Thursday the company posted the battery replacement details on its Web site last Friday after the product went on sale.

Users would have to submit their iPhone to Apple for battery service. The service will cost users $79, plus $6.95 for shipping, and will take three business days.

The procedure is similar to the one it has for the company's best-selling iPod players, but because some users will not want to live without their cell phones, Apple is also offering a loaner iPhone for $29 while the gadget is under repair.

Harvey Rosenfield, founder of the Santa Monica, Calif.-based consumer watchdog group that wrote the letter last week, contends the iPhone's battery and repair costs should have been clearly disclosed earlier. The company outlined its cellular service rates and many other features of the iPhone in advance of its launch, which drew snaking lines around stores across the country.

"Some of them might be waking up now," Rosenfield said, "wondering who they got in bed with."

Apple did not have an immediate comment on the consumer group's concerns.

Rosenfield said he didn't detect the battery information, which is located under several layers of links on Apple's support page on its Web site, until earlier this week. Technology blogs also started reporting their discoveries of it this week while one of the questions Wall Street Journal tech columnist Walt Mossberg fielded Thursday from his readers was about what happens when the iPhone battery dies.

"The cell phone industry is notorious for not being consumer-friendly while Apple has a fairly good reputation, so for Apple to stand on a technicality of a hidden disclosure that's going to cost the user as much as 20 percent of the purchase price I think will prove to be a colossal mistake," Rosenfield said.

The iPhone costs $499 or $599, depending on the model, and requires a minimum two-year $60-a-month service plan with AT&T.

The consumer and taxpayer organization has gone to court over these kinds of issues in the past. It is embroiled in a pending lawsuit against Cingular, now part of AT&T, over its service termination fees, and is also one of the plaintiffs in a pending lawsuit against Apple over an early model iPod Nano that was allegedly defective because it scratched easily.

In addition, Rosenfield said, replacing the iPhone battery should be free to begin with while the product is under its one-year warranty.

He also questioned why Apple chose to go against the norm of what cell phone users are accustomed to — swapping out their own batteries and generally at a cost that is less than half of what Apple is charging now for the iPhone.

"I'm just surprised at Apple's decision to defy the common practice of allowing people to purchase replacement batteries," he said. "And the fact that the information is buried is just not appropriate."

Apple has not disclosed how many iPhones were available at launch, though analysts have speculated the amount was 500,000 or more. AT&T said the gadget had sold out at most of its stores on the night of the launch while many Apple stores ran out of stock by early this week. Those ordering the iPhone online through Apple's Web site on Thursday were being promised delivery would be in two to four weeks.

Does anybody know if AT&T stores are re-stocked yet? Today is payday for me and the urge to buy one of these is hitting me hard.

Rumor has it that re-stocks were suppose to hit both Apple and AT&T stores today, but I don't know if that happened or not. If the AT&T stores near you were taking orders for them when they ran out of stock, they may not have any to sell even when they do get restocked.

If you have an Apple store near by, you'll have more luck getting one there.

An Apple store would be preferable, obviously (they seem to get so much more stock in), but the closest one is two hours away in Jacksonville, FL :(.

holy shit browsing the web on this thing is nice. I'm def getting used to the keyboard now as I just let the autocorrection do its thing. Wayyyy better than t9 that's for sure.

I'm on edge right now and it's really not that bad. Just takes a bit longer to load but I had Neogaf up in about 15 seconds.

seriously the speed on edge is actually quite good where I am. It's slowish but not the snail's pace I had been led to believe it would be. And I've been very surprised with how readable everything is. Real easy to keep up with neogaf on the go from this little thing. So worth the money.

Well, apparently AT&T spent some time recently increasing their bandwidth around the country in preparation for iPhone. The night before iPhone's launch, EDGE users all over reported a sudden increase in speeds.

My favorite part of this little device is the screen.. I don't think I've ever seen a better one on a portable device.

Even my anime episodes look absolutely fantastic at 480x320 at "half quality" from the divx files I have. Down from 190ish mb at 640x480 to 89mb at 480x320 and they look amazing.

I've got enough room for an entire anime series on this thing, with 865 songs on it too :)

I can confirm this to be the case. AT&T upgraded most of their urban network nodes to accommodate more data traffic AND to allow for more utilization since pretty much everything the iPhone does goes through the data network. The one thing I am happy with about the iPhone is that it is exposing more and more consumers to what is possible when you actually have a phone with a data plan.

I've had much fewer problems with Edge than I thought I would. I had the system on my old phone too and it was terribly slow. It's been strikingly improved.

Crybabies. The battery is covered under the one-year hardware warranty, so I don't see why anyone is freaking out about this or claiming Apple has buried the information on their page. Anyone with an iPod over a year old has likely gone through this saga at some point, no one should be surprised.

Used the phone nearly nonstop today -- maps, email, web, text message, video, Youtube... only got the 20% battery left message just a few minutes ago. Even showed a cab driver how to get somewhere using the phone's Google map. How handy is that?

Okay, I've had my iPhone for exactly a week since launch day, but the AT&T Store has yet to charge my card, and no funds for $7XX have been deducted yet.

Is this happening to anyone else? I've used the same card DAYS after getting the iPhone and those charges have posted.

Same problem for me cvxfreak. The charge was pending for several days on my check card, but it has fallen off and hasn't re-surfaced yet. I'm getting a little concerned myself. Even moreso now that I know that it isn't just me :/

So I have a couple of movies in H264 at ~3000 bitrate which is too high for the iPhone. I found that re-encoding them by right clicking them in iTunes and selecting "Convert to iPod" works by lowering the bitrate. Is there a better way to do this?

They'll probably invoice you for it with your first month of service.

For some reason the sliding lock (and ONLY the sliding lock) decided to stop working a few minutes ago (all other functions worked perfectly, including the volume adjuster).

A reset solved the problem though.

No crash report on iTunes though.

I may just take the plunge later today. My wife is pushing that I get it, especially since she's going back to school later in the year and funds won't be as available later as they are now. I've been trying to hold out for a second or third generation but I may jump the gun if the following scenario is easy enough.

If I buy an iPhone, set up a family plan for me and my wife on AT&T, and she gets a plain old phone, how easy is it down the road when a second or third generation iPhone is out for me to give my wife the first gen iPhone and me buy the new one while keeping our numbers?

You're worried that you may have gotten a free iPhone?

You may have been sitting in GPRS land which is ludicrously slow compared to edge.

Yeah, just noticed the card mine is on isn't charged either.
