Should be super easy. I don't know why you would have a problem doing what you describe.

OK, I may try iSquint. I'm currently using ffmpegX, which works fine, but it's a bit of a hassle to do multiple files.
 
hey have a quick question.... Does the iPhone support any type of IM app? like aim? or yahoo?

I would love to be able to communicate with my friends on aim when I get this thing in the fall... so I was just curious

There is no built in chat app just yet, but there is speculation that they'll add one. iChat works on the AIM network on Mac's, so that would likely be the way they go. You can also use something like Meebo.com which I've already tried and it seems to work fine.


BTW, as of a day or two ago, I hadn't been charged for my iPhone either, and I got it at an Apple Store.

and I've already seen my bill, no $643 addition to it for the phone.

Yeah, though it is a pain in the ass when charges go MIA for a while.. I should have just paid cash, but I didn't want to carry that kind of cash on me and have to wait in line.
 
So far the only thing that makes me sad is when I take a picture, I can not automatically send it to another person's cell phone. I was so used to taking impromptu shots and getting automatic responses from my friends. Now I have to email it. Not as satifying. :\

Otherwise I love it. I imagine somewhere down the line we might be able to customise the buttons (I don't need a stock ticker but I'd love the flight status widget on there). That's one of my wishes.

I believe this weekend was the first iPhone developers conference in San Francisco. Hopefully we'll here some things this week about what we have in store.
 
Well GAF, I did it. I now own an 8GB iPhone. This thing is a-****ing-mazing. I haven't even really used it. It's syncing music as I type this up on my Powerbook. I can't believe how small it is. I knew it was small but it's even smaller than I thought. I'm just amazed all around. Maybe the best $600 I've ever spent.
 
I got a chance to play with one at the Cingular store by my house and was blown away by how smooth and seemless everything was. The moment it hits $299 it's mine.

Does anyone know if it's possible to connect your computer to the internet using the iPhone as a wireless bridge?

I wonder if the iPhone will drop in price or if Apple will do the usual route of product updates where it stays at the same price but offers more features (probably in this case larger storage capacity, 3G and perhaps a better camera). I'd almost say that waiting for a price drop is setting yourself up for disappointment. But the iPhone may be different than most Apple products in that respect, it's too early to tell.

No you cannot.

Here's a question. I see it pop up all over as one of the criticisms of the phone -- no physical keyboard. Are people really having that much trouble with the touchscreen? I have big American hands and I'm loving the keyboard. I couldn't type on my old phone without looking at it anyway so this really isn't much removed from that.

And, another question -- who's bought a case for theirs versus going naked? I've got mine nekkid in me pocket. No scratches have appeared yet.

Some of us crackberry users are very proficient at typing on a tactile keyboard. I can text about as fast as I type on a normal keyboard, in proper grammar and punctuation, too. Using a screen to do that same job is very, very different and slows you down considerably. I can think of a few ways Apple can fix the problem (namely, making the keys bigger), but I assume people will get used to it after a while. I know I will.
 
Posting this from my new iPhone! This thing makes the internet truly awesome on a phone. Also, I am pretty good at typing in widscreen mode.

Anyway, I just got some weird mark on my screen that wouldn't go away no matter how much I rubbed it. Finally I wet my finger and wiped it and it disappeared. *crisis averted*

I was sitting under a tree using mine and I got a bit of tree sap on it. It wouldn't wipe off either until I wet my finger. Maybe that's what you had?

No case here. I usually put my phone in its own separate pocket anyway so unless I drop it (knock on wood), I should be ok.

I'm definitely getting much faster with the keyboard. Typed out a couple of e-mails on it while waiting for a move to start at the theater yesterday. Made very few mistakes. I'm certainly gaining in proficiency quickly.

And I bought a case. When I'm going out casual I've just been throwing it in my pocked, but while at work I like to have it in a case so I got a belt clip model that I like quite a bit. No scratches on the iPhone so far, just finger prints on the screen. :)

I'm still getting used to fingerprints. They are going to happen. My fingers are kind of oily, so I leave smudges on the screen. It was getting to me at first but I realized that I'll just have to live with it. Perhaps a case with a felt interior would help wipe it off every time I pulled it out or put it in...
 
I bought a crystal film from the apple store for my phone yesterday. I know it's supposedly not necessary, but I can't deny that I feel much better with it on. For only 15 bucks, I couldn't see a reason not to.

I actually only really notice them when the screen is turned off or in certain lighting situations. It doesn't bother me too much, and wiping it off is simple and doesn't damage the screen.

How was the application and does it attract a lot of dust under it? The engadget preview had dust ALL OVER it.

Very easy to apply - about 10 seconds from the moment I opened the package until it was on my phone. I just wiped the phone down to perfect condition and stuck that badboy on there. So far, there's no dust issue, but I guess time will tell. I'm not sure why engadget's had tons of dust, outside of them applying the film in a dusty area.

My friend bought another brand of film (forget which), so we'll see which is better.

It's static-cling, right? So it's not sticky?

also, I exaggerated a bit about the dust in engadget's preview, but

Yup, static cling, not sticky. If it was sticky, I would have thought twice about applying it. No real risk this way. Judging from those pics, I guess they just don't know how to install in a dust free environment or how to clean it, because there's no dust under mine. Yet. I'll post again in a few days to see how it's holding up.

Ok, cool. I'm gonna pick one up at the apple store tommorow.
 
Are you guys applying those things to avoid smudging? Because aside from that, I wouldn't see the need. The screen is pretty scratch resistant and well protected and I'm just not a big fan of having those screen protectors on my devices.
 
I'm planning to pick one of these up on the second gen so most of the faults are worked out. Does anyone know what kind of battery life you get when using Wifi to surf the net?

Usually I'm not a fan either, but I guess I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to a $600 phone. Once on, you really can't tell that it's on, so to me, there's really no downside.

Yeah I don't see the point either. The thing is meant to be touched and handled and smudged. I've had mine for a week now and all I gotta do is wipe the screen with the cloth the phone came with and it's as good as new.

I love how you can click and it pulls up directions in the Google Map app. Sooo convenient.

-Is iCal editable in iPhone?
-If so, do changes made on the iPhone sync up to your computer?
-Could you post some screens? (iCal is mysteriously absent from the thirty minute iPhone video on Apple's website, something smells fishy)

Personally, I think it's very convenient and appropriate. For instance, I love how the keyboard can be customized for the different apps that you are in. While using Safari, there is a ".com" button. Or while in the e-mail app the "@" symbol is moved to the main keyboard screen. When you consider the options for how flexible the keyboard can be, it's pretty amazing.

I don't have any screens, but can tell you that anything you enter into iCal on your computer or on the iPhone automatically sync with one another.
