yeah i'm really interested in getting an iphone because i don't have an ipod and a decent phone, but i was wondering...

is there a way to get the iphone without the data plan? i have no need for the data plan due to constant wifi access and i'm already on AT&T...

The data plan is mandatory. $20/month with unlimited data and 200 texts.

It looks really fake but it's real.

If you would have read some of the other posts, you would have seen that you can call customer service and opt out of the data plan. Although, I can't imagine not having the data plan though. It's awesome for Google Maps, Mail on the go and Safari.

An unlocked iPhone is about as appealing as a firmware hacked PSP. Really don't like having to constantly worry about it getting bricked with every single update. Apple will certainly end up reversing the unlocks in software via iTunes update.

Until the iPhone is fully independent of iTunes, it'll never totally be free/unlocked.

Anything that you have physical access to can be hacked and unlocked. That's how they unlocked it the first time, and that's how they'll get around the lock when Apple tries to lock it again. Same way people got around Apple's software updates that prevented ring tones, the same way people hack through DRM solutions, the same way that people un-meter cars. At the end of the day, these solutions aren't workable so long as there are people willing to brick their devices in order to come up with a way to break through the protections put in place.

I just read this on engadget. Its kind of hopeful for anyone who uses any type of 3rd party unlocking software

It's really an ethical dilemma for the ages. On one hand, you love your shiny new Apple toy so much, you just have to hack in new functionality, on the other hand you can't bear to think that the mighty Steve Jobs thinks ill of you and your hacker ways. Well now you can finally put those fears to rest, because Apple's Greg Joswiak has officially confirmed a "neutral" stance on the iPhone hacking issue. That is to say, Apple doesn't plan to maliciously attempt to break native, third-party applications in forthcoming firmware updates, but at the same time Apple won't go out of its way to ensure those updates don't break third-party applications accidentally, and certainly isn't offering support to the hackers of any kind. We'd say it's a step above "frenemy," but not quite to the point where Steve'll be demoing Jailbreak at his next keynote.

ok I found the first thing I DO NOT like about the AT&T service...

My friend send me a video from his celphone and sent it to me on the iphone... obviously I cant view it right on the phone itself, so my txt message was that a friend sent me a multimedia message and to go to

www.viewmymessage.com and enter the following login and password, which I did, and every time I do it, I get an error. and when I can get to the message itself, it never plays...

THAT SUCKS!!!

Yes, that is one of the many things that suck so much about the AT&T services.

One of the pre-launch complaints about the iPhone was that it simply can't do MMS. I'm thinking this is Apple's design decision, not AT&T's.

I actually forgot to update that post... it wasnt actually a video he sent me, it was just a picture, but still that site is so flaky.

Apple has always been that way - they were with the AppleTV as well. At the end of the day they really don't care so long as you don't expect them to support you if your device gets bricked because of a software update. Hell they've been that way with all of their devices... and despite their public "we won't help you" if you meet one of those guys at a developer program they will chat with you about ways to do what you're thinking - provided you aren't doing something that would break the device or hurt the business model :)

Nah, even if people send me MMS messages on my Nokia E61 - they come across through that shitty site. I think it has more to do with the fact that not all of the phones have competent clients for displaying MMS and Video messages.

Yeah, I don't know why anyone wouldn't want it, but if you can opt out later, that's good to know.

MMS's came through fine on my Blackjack. So they do work on AT&T.

Guys! New Summerboard update out, complete with preference options like the ability to turn off the wallpaper.

Man, the homebrew community is working harder than Apple is to make the iPhone a more complete product.....kind of a shame if you ask me.

Yeah, preference menu ROCKS. I can now have a non-black wallpaper. Also turning off fourth row is pretty slick, because then the iPhone doesn't "appear hacked" to lookers on, until you start scrolling.

It's getting really hard to hold out on getting one of these now that Touch has been revealed and my contract with T-Mobile is up. So tempting... T_T

Eh. A mapping feature is only about 50% useful if it can't tell you where you are automagically.

I have zero issues with it not having GPS. It's pretty easy to find out where you are by searching for an address or landmark. Super simple to get directions from there. I use Google Maps a lot and it's been extremely useful.

Again, if GPS cuts into battery life, I'm happy using it as is. Works very well.

Absolutely. As I said before the map totally won me over with the iPhone. If you know landmarks around your town and you have an address to go to, the Maps feature will save your ass. Driving on 101 + Google Maps = Went to Awesome Party.

Girlfriend from Russia wants iPhone. I know unlocking it will allow Russian SIMs to work.
What methods am I looking at and it should be just fine, right?
(She'll be using iTunes on her laptop to sync)

You can continue with T-Mobile if you wish since the phone can now be unlocked in a relatively simple 20 minute procedure. If you do sign up with AT&T, make sure to get the subsidy for another phone before getting the iPhone (for instance, sign up and get a free Blackjack then buy an iPhone immediately afterwards). You can sell the extra phone or use it as backup.

Don't quote me on this but I remember reading somewhere that some specific plans require you to hold the plan for a couple of months before you can buy the iPhone and reactivate your plan. I think it was only the Blackberry plans that had that requirement though so it's best to check first before you go this route.

Well, of course I should have kept my mouth shut. My boss's husband won a brand new 8gb iPhone and can't use it as he still has another 1.5 years on his contract with his current provider, so he sold it to me for $300. At that price there was no way I could refuse. I can't wait for work to end so I can go home and set it up. It's so beautiful and I am so weak willed. T_T

Once you activate it, you'll have no regrets. Seriously.

No, I know I won't. I'm already a total Apple schill and I have been researching smart phones for the past month or so, and while none of them are perfect (iPhone included) I came to the realization that it is probably what is going to work best for me. I am very excited and happy with the price I paid for it, it just happened kind of suddenly.

So yes, I am overwhelmed by how cool the iPhone is. It is obscene how sexy it is. This is the coolest piece of kit I've bought in a loooong time.

Yep! It lives up to pretty much all the hype. Yes, there are some features that could be added, but as it is, it's just such a well done device that it's hard not to be blown away. Welcome to the club! :D

Dang it guys....I can get the 8GB for $350 right now (Brand new of course)....but I'm still not 100% sure. Is it REALLY really worth it?

I would have to unlock it of course since I have T-mobile but that shouldn't be that big of a deal. The only thing is I guess ...should I just go for it, or join the wait-and-see tribe for the next upgrade (16GB)

An interesting thing to note is in the past all the iPods get left behind when a new firmware is introduced. The iPhone/iPodTouch are future-proofed by this hacking.

Seriously, the iPod classic and all the devices now have the Shuffle on/off at anytime without resorting to the settings menu. I am SO peeved.

In your shoes, I'd wait to see how Apple responds with the next firmware upgrade.

Right now I'm not sure how I feel about using the phone as my main portable music player. I really miss the tactile feedback of the touchweel, and having to look at the phone just to skip through songs is kind of a drag. The recessed headphone jack is a pain in the ass too considering how crap the standard Apple headphones are. I think I'll keep using my old work horse 20gb iPod photo for now, and use the iPhone for music when I don't feel like carrying both. And maybe I'll buy an iPod Classic sometime in the near future. :D

I'm sure it won't be too long before other manufacturers start making headphones that have the pause/skip button like the Apple pair that come with the phone. Personally, I like those 'phones. Much more comfortable than the pair that came with my old 60GB iPod Photo. I do actually use the phone as my main portable music player, though it doesn't do me much good in the car...since none of the FM transmitters seem to work with the iPhone. :'(

And btw I think Belkin makes headphone extenders that you can plug into the phone that allow you to use any headphones you want.

I'm kind of in the same boat. But I haven't loaded up all my music on my iPhone either. I have a nice assortment on their so I have stuff to listen to when I want it, but it's not main player either. I also have an 8 GB 2nd Gen Nano for working out and running, and I've been hearing the siren call of that 160GB Classic since it's been announced too. That amazing battery life has me really interested for long, extended trips.

If you do use the included headphones, you get the added benefit of being able to skip tracks by double-clicking the microphone nub. No need to look at the screen, then.

Oh wow, I'm an idiot. I had no idea you can do that. Well, that solves one problem! I just wish the actual headphones fit in my ears better, they are way too loose. I'm too used to using studio headphones or the in-ear earbuds. Oh well, it's not a deal breaker by any means. I think another reason I am hesitant to use it as my main player is I don't want to get mugged on the subway. If my iPhone gets jacked, I'm out a phone and a MP3 player!

If you mean the buds you get with the iphone, then you sir, are NUTS!!! I used those last saturday in the city and my ears were KILLING me!!! Apple needs to make in-ear buds with the inline mic and then I will be very happy.

I'm looking at these:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SKU94E/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Only problem is they don't have the button on the mic, which I've already grown to love. Word on the net is that a new pair are coming soon with the button added, so I'll probably wait.

I use these when I want to listen to my ipod on the phone...

They are comfortable as hell. the only negative is there is no inline mic built in... so if the phone rings you have to answer it like you were using a real phone....

There are some FM transmitters that still work. The one I have does ... it's the Scosche branded one. I got it at Walmart for about 20 bucks. Try searching ipodlounge forums on it.
