BTW, Apple has now posted the details for the $100 store credit. I just got mine! Now wtf am I gonna buy with it? HMMMMMmmmm... Decisions, decisions.

Awesome. Just got mine! Now will I be able to hold out on spending it? :D I want that new iPod Classic, but I don't really need it just yet.

Also, I wonder when the update will be released to add the WiFi store. Since the Touch is now available in stores, I have to think we'll get the update soon.

I really don't care about MMS though.

Neither do I really, but its nice to have... just because if on the off chance I do get a MMS message from my friend I dont have to browse to some crazy att website to view it...

Also, I remember someone in here in a very very early post put up the e-mail extensions of phones from other providers, so that if we take a pic with the iphone we can e-mail right to their phone as some kind of quasi MMS message...

I remember verizon was XXXXXXXXXX@vzwpix.com

Does anyone remember the other extensions???

Save it for Leopard?

Or, like, a bunch of songs on itunes.

Apparently you cannot use it on iTunes Gift Cards. :'(

On the good side, someone noticed that on this page Apple has pictured firmware "Version 1.1.1" -- which isn't out yet. It has preferences for "Home Button" and "International." The Home Button functionality is something that's new on the Touch -- a double-tap brings up music controls from any screen you're on (even if the screen's off). Hopefully this means they're on the verge of releasing an update.

mine doesnt work :(
Worked for me, for the 4 gigger I bought this week.

I almost feel bad, but I've given Apple like $2000 this year.

Unfortunately, without the ability to but itunes gift cards, looks like I really will be holding this until Leopard, and I'll have like $20 that I have no idea what to do with.

Mine didn't work either. Either they caught it that fast or some serial numbers are registering the wrong sale dates.

Who knows... all I know is I printed mine out and am going to bring it to my apple store to get something...

:)

There is one issue that I have with the phone, and I hope it starts getting a little more attention and I hope it can be addressed.

I have a phone now, and love it so far. Save for one problem: the camera.

I noticed on other people's iPhones (they are usually older/closer to launch models) that their camera is normal, while mine has a green hue to everything it takes. Apparently it is an issue with the white balance.

Closer inspection at an Apple store and I noticed that some of the phones they had out to demo also had the same problem, while others did not.

It's also mentioned here:
http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/07/18/some-iphone-camera-photos-display-greenish-tint-images/

Obviously this can be corrected with photos taken off the phone, since you can correct them on your system with iPhoto for example. But it's just a little annoying to know that some people, who should have the same thing I do, don't have to deal with the hassle.

It also appears (just with talking to/looking at phones that people have just bought that I know) that a good majority of the 'newer' ones are doing the same thing.

To be fair, I purchased my iPhone from someone who won it in a contest, so it was probably purchased before the price drop. The important thing is that in the end, it benefitted me and I essentially paid $200 for my phone. :D

I can't decide what to spend mine on, so I'm going to save it. It's tempting to put it towards another iPod, but I really can't decide what model I want. The pricing structure of the current models seems so absurd, it's still kind of mind boggling that the 8gb Nano is only $50 less than an iPod with 8x the storage capacity. I really want a flash based player for the gym, but the price is hard to swallow when the high end players are essentially in the same price range.

You already have a flash player. It is your iphone.

Why don't you return your phone to the Apple store via Genius Bar? It shouldn't be doing that.

Yeah, as I said: it appears some of the cameras do it, and others don't. Also: if some of you have friends with phones, try your cameras side by side and see if there are any differences. I'd appreciate it.

Don't know if it is just a certain set of them/batch or what. But I've only started looking into the matter here recently.

I will be going by the Apple Store today. But looking at the phones they have on display, I am not hopeful.

Got my $100 credit, and spent another $150 on a 80gig Ipod Classic. Apple wins again!

I was going to use my $100 on a nano, but then I decided to get a pair of in ear headphones that are $100... I just have to ask them first how well they work with the iphone in regards to the mic and stuff...

I understand where you're coming from, but Apple's refusal to start a Firmware War a la Sony and the PSP is really all most power users want. Which gets to my point: an open platform has only ever mattered to the power users. Everyone else just wants it to do what they expect it to.

Are you using your iPhone stock with no enhancements or 3rd party components? Are you using the device exactly as it was shipped from Apple? I haven't run across any iPhone users who are using their devices exactly as they came - they are all using SOMETHING from a 3rd party whether than be iToner or some of the applications that allow them to change the icons or the backgrounds. This is happening because developers and hackers are opening up the platform - but unfortunately having to do so in a way that is not supported and will likely break with any random update.

If Microsoft would have provided every application people needed and locked out everyone else (and they practically did in some cases), people wouldn't be screaming for an open platform; and 95% of earth isn't.

That's just false. If people didn't need 3rd party software, there would be no software market. People expect to be able to use their devices to do new and interesting things that solve problems for them. People aren't screaming for open platforms because MOST platforms are already open.

And for us power users, hacking the phone couldn't be easier. One double-click and we've got probably the best package installer I've seen this side of apt-get, along with a slew of unbelievably rapidly developing applications. I couldn't be happier.

And I'm glad somebody made it, I'm glad there are people out there who are trying to free the platform from its owners because they are being negligent.

If I were to get my mom an iPhone, I would want to keep it locked down, because OTOB it does more than what she needs; she would actually benefit from a locked platform, because anything more would confuse her and turn her off to the entire idea of a convergence device.

Does she use her computer with no software?

ok so I installed installer.app and the mobile chat.

Couple of things...

1. What is the summerboard application? What can I do with it?

2. Has anyone else noticed that mobile chat will not connect when just on the edge network? I was at the movies earlier and I had it trying to connect the entire 2hr movie... the minute I pulled up to my door and the phone got onto my network, it launced right away... I didnt need it to launch then, because I was home and could just get on the PC.

Damn, how do i get that $100 store credit if i got mine from the US but now i'm using it in canada?

Didn't even activate it with AT-T so i'm probably hooped am I?

It works over Edge, it's just that there seems to be a connection bug of some sort.
The summerboard allows you to add scrolling to your springboard as well as a full-time wallpaper underneath the icons. It's a great app!

/Raises hand. I am. I don't feel the need to do any of the hacks at this point. The phone works and it works well. I'm far more productive with this phone stock out of the box than I ever was with my Windows Mobile phone loaded to the gills with 3rd party stuff.

Same here. I am using iPhoneRingtone to make ringtones, but I hardly call that hacking or not having a "stock" iPhone. I don't feel the need to hack it either.

my iphone got scratched somehow... how much to get it fixed?

Since its optical quality glass, I imagine it'd be safe to use an eyeglass repair polish to buff out the scratches. I used Apple Sauce on a scratched up 1G Nano and got ALL the scratches out; and that was the most scratchable Apple product to date, I believe.

And Phoenix: I totally see your point and agree to an extent. I just think the devil's advocate position is that the market has shown that openness is rarely what people directly crave. If that were the case, we'd all be using Linux and calling it GNU.

Juice, on further inspection, it looks like it's actually a crack in the glass. I can live with it but it bugs me sometimes. You think Apple has some sort of repair policy? Since it's my fault, I'd be willing to pony up a small $$

Nope, sorry doesn't qualify as that is outside the toolchain Apple has provided to support the phone.

Well don't confuse me wanting an open platform with wanting it to be open source. I could care less if Apple released the source for their platforms - but I think they should all be open so that people who have a vision and innovative streak will be able to do cool stuff on the platform.

So what's the consensus right now for third party apps and or ringtones? I'm looking for the simplest methods.

I wouldn't call the installer app a "hack", there's no tweaking the phone's root directory, it's just a soft mod. People call it a hack to make it sound more elite when in fact anyone can perform the mod using ibrkr.

With that said, there's no way i'll ever go back to using the iPhone's default set-up.

Here's a walk through:

Right on. I don't disagree. I just still don't see the average consumer actually executing the thought "I won't buy X because you can't program it to do Y."

It's because the average consumer is usually a sheep who doesn't even know he'd want to be able to do Y, and especially wouldn't think he'd be able to do it with X.

I think Apple's hiding the "disk mode" of its consumer devices for this reason. They want people to think of them as unipurpose machines and be able to control the flow of features to them as the product and audience mature. That would obviously maximize their profits. I can see why they'd do it

I would personally like a viable software market on that phone, but like with most things Apple does, I usually kick and scream for a few years to get them to do things my way before I give in and start doing things their way; and so long as I'm using their products, I'm the happier for it.

How long have you had it? I'd return it and pay the restocking fee. Probably the most straightforward option if they let you. Complain it obviously wasn't very durable.

Otherwise, call customer relations and piss and moan that you had to take out a loan to buy the thing and now it's all exploded in your face.

The traditional approach seems less savory:

I have two roommates with an iPhone. One hasn't done any hacking at all yet and the other one I only helped him get the 24 CTU ringtone with iFuntastic. But neither of them have expressed interest in hacking.

Myself? My Installer.app has been quite busy ;)

One recent irony I've uncovered is the fact that I was never able to play Zork as I couldn't get them to work on my W95 machine. Now they run on my iPhone just fine. Score!

I don't plan on upgrading. I'll probably be without iTunes Wifi until November, when my T-Mobile contract expires and I switch to AT&T. Unless...
