fuck. meh i can live without the wireless itunes store

thats a nice looking case. I have the Incase one they sell in applestores and while i like it, the damn thing starts to stretch after a couple weeks even if you don't take it on and off.

I haven't hacked my iPhone at all with the exception of putting custom ring tones on with the m4a/m4r trick. I'm happy with everything else. It does kind of drive me nuts that Apple put out widgets for weather and stocks, but not fucking sports scores. Sure I can go online but all the sites like ESPN and Sprotsline are fucking huge and almost always crash Safari. Is there a good simple page where I can get sports scores (specifically college football), perhaps one designed for iPhone?

http://u.fumbleview.com/ is great. It's the same interface for College Fball as http://www.pickleview.com/ is for MLB.

This is freakin' awesome. I can't wait for next weekend now!

One question, why is there so much chatter in the chat channel and why does it sound like people are watching the games right now? I'm confused about that. I switched it to play-by-play.

The chat stuff is weird. Seems to use Twitter to some extent.

Has anyone tried to use Glide on their iPhone yet? I was thinking about setting it up, but I don't want to it its going to me uber limited and or more trouble than its worth.

I have a question, has anyone purchased a refurbished Iphone at apple.com? How are they? Good?

I'm seriously considering it, but only if I can keep it under $400. My contract runs out in November so this would be a nice move for me I think since I also need a new ipod!

Thanks.

I'm debating whether to get an iPhone or a 16GB iPod Touch. So conflicted. I'm out of my verizon contract, but I mainly want an I-something with touchscreen for the wifi capability when I don't want to haul around a laptop or turn on my PC in the morning.

I'd probably keep my 30GB iPod Video for use in the car and use the other as my carry around iPod. Just not sure if I should go for the iPod or the iPhone. Leaning toward the iPod since I don't really need a $60 monthly phone charge.

I was in the same boat. I got a really great deal on the iPhone so that swayed my decision too, but now that I have it I am really happy to have access to Edge. I've found the majority of the time when I need to check my e-mail or look up something on the net, I'm not near a Wifi hot spot. I don't know, I think it depends on how much you're going to want the ability to browse the net and check e-mail anywhere. There's something really nerdy and enjoyable about reading GAF on the bus. :lol

My gf bought a refurb 8gig, besides it being packed in a white Apple box instead of black it was virtually brand new, the casing and screen were both in pristine condition.

I would definitely go that route considering you get the same warranty as a new model.

How did you get a great deal on an iPhone? Granted, I doubt it's anything that could be replicated, but I'd be interested in knowing.

I just don't know if 8GB is enough for me though. I'm going to have to cut the amount of music on the iPod touch in half as it is since I'm nearly filling my 30GB iPod video. Ugh, apple just doesn't have the perfect "sweet spot" for me this go round unfortunately.

The only hesitation I'd have with moving to an iPhone - aside from the storage issue as mentioned above - is EVERYONE I know is on Verizon, so I make very good use of IN calling and not having chargeable talk time on my bill.

Having EDGE everywhere is great. Sure the speeds aren't like Wifi but the tradeoff of having it available everywhere you get cell service is worth it.

I can't believe I used to use my cell phones without data plans. I can't go back ever again.

Has anybody upgraded to iTunes 7.4.2 yet? Does it bork custom ringtones again?

from macrumors.net

Apple has posted iTunes 7.4.2 for Mac and Windows today.

What’s New in this Version
iTunes 7.4.2 addresses an issue with creating ringtones using iTunes Plus song purchases and includes bug fixes to improve stability and performance.

Apple recently introduced 7.4.1 on September 7th. The 7.4.1 update had disabled a workaround that allowed users to create their own ringtones out of any song. No word on whether or not the 7.4.2 update causes any problems with unofficial ringtones.

Early Reactions from Comments:

- iToner still works.
- Other custom Ringtones appear to be removed (via MakeiPhoneRingtone) and can not be recreated even using using 'proper' tag change techniques previously described.

This sucks. I want to keep my ringtones, but I don't want to pay 15 fucking dollars for iToner. That's a total rip off for what it does. I could buy 15 ringtones for that! Don't they understand that? I'll wait for MakeiPhoneRingtone to work again and get it.

I really only need a couple ringtones. I'll probably just end up going the legit route. It would take me a year to make enough to justify iToner.

If you're willing to install the "Installer.app" there is an application called "sendsong" that will not only email any song from your iPhone to a recipient, but will also add any music you have to your ringtones list.

I don't know why people are so hesitant to use Installer if they're looking to add custom ringtones for free.....

Reasons like that are why I still have 7.4.0.

But I suppose I could just copy the files directly into the ringtone folder using SFTP. I'm just too lazy.

Yeah... Installer.app is very easy to install, I would hardly call it 'hacking' and it lets you download such apps right from the phone. SendSong needs some kind of organization (it just lists all your songs), but it works fine.

I'm in the same boat. Don't really want to pay $15 for something I may never use 15 times. But on the other hand, the tunes I'm using for my ringtones are not available as options, so go figure. I'm guessing MakeiPhoneRingtone will update soon.

My boss's husband won one in a contest at some conference, and neither of them could use it as they are both stuck in their current cellphone contracts and are nowhere near savy enough to unlock the phone. They were going on vacation in a couple of days and wanted extra cash, so she offered it to me for $300, which I jumped at. For whatever reason I was also able to sign up for the $100 in store credit Apple is offering to early adopters, so if you want to use somewhat specious logic I only paid $200 for it (even if $100 is going to go directly back to Apple at some point).

Personally, I think the trade off for storage space is easier to swallow for the Edge internet and phone capabilities. If I really want the majority of my music collection with me, I can always go back to my 20GB iPod photo or pick up a Classic, but as of right now the ability to have the music I listen to the most incoporated into my cellphone with a killer interface is quite a novelty.

The saga continues...

Indeed. I imagine it's only a matter of time before the hackers get it working again, but still, it's a pain in the ass if you lose your ringtones each time a new version of iTunes comes out. Of course, Apple is hoping to make it a pain in the ass.

Fixed.

You may be GAF's first carrier switcher. Good luck surviving next week's firmware upgrade.

I bought one and unlocked it, thinking I could resell it on eBay and profit a little, thereby taking the sting out of buying a second one for myself. Unfortunately, I pretty much just broke even after sales tax, Paypal fees and shipping. So I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy another one next week. I'll be a T-Mobile user, too. Although at this point I'll wait and see what happens with the firmware upgrade.

Judging from how Apple has responded to the custom ringtones situation (which is a mild annoyance), I'd say people with unlocked phones are going to find themselves bent over very shortly. We've had what, three new versions of iTunes in a short span of time, each whose purpose is little more than to break custom ringtones in some way, shape or form. Just gives me a feeling that Apple is going to put the screws to unlockers/modders/hackers, and it's going to hurt.

I updated iTunes and the ring tones I put on my phone with iToner are still there...

Bwuh? Also macrumors says that 7.4.2 doesn't brick iToner. What programs are you guys using?

(Or, actually, I don't remember if I've synced my iPhone since I updated iTunes. Hmm, maybe that's it...)

apple is kind of forced to do something about the ringtone situation, but they have said countless times that hacking of the iphone is okay.. they dont care, but they wont be mindful of the hacks when they update programs.

10:04 - Here we go... Steve stands up, welcomes everyone. And he dives right in: the iPhone has been announced for the UK! "We picked the best one, the most poplular carrier, it's O2. We've since lowered the price of the US phone of the 8GB phone, in the UK the price of the iPhone is £269 including VAT."

10:06 - It goes on sale November 9.

iPhone in the UK goes on sale November 9. 269 Pounds (get the damn Euro) incl. VAT. O2 is the carrier

Available phone plans 35/45/55 Pounds per month.

They were citing battery time as the reason for no 3G.

The inclusion of free wifi is nice, but I'll probably wait for 3G and at least 16gb before I bite. Unless the deal is remarkably better here in Switzerland.

Why is Apple's approach to disabling ring tones reflecting of how they'll treat unlockers/modders? It's a COMPLETELY different situation. With ring tones, the majority of songs aren't available for ringtone-age via iTunes because of rights issues. If Apple's going to prove to record labels they should be opening up iTunes purchases to include the right to make a ringtone, they need to show labels it's a viable business.

At the London iPhone event Steve has just said they'll go after unlockers, that they have to stay one step ahead of them.

Seconded. The fact that o2's Edge network [currently] only covers 30% of the UK is quite disappointing too.

If they decide to close the iPhone as a mobile platform, that's incredibly depressing.
