So here's a question: when you bought your iphone, what firmware did it have on it?

1.0? 1.01? 1.02?

Buddy of mine is sending one to me north of the border, but hopefully the new firmware doesn't come out before then - is there any way to manually update the firmware to 1.02 without itunes, incase the 1.1.1 release happens this weekend?

anyone try the navizon GPS that is available

I tried it. I could never get it to work the whole day until I was at a stoplight off the highway and decided to try it. Amazingly, it said I was exactly where I was. Pretty impressive.

The thing is just incredibly flaky though.

I kinda dislike the placement of the iTunes Wifi store icon... Why put it all the way on the right and have three blank spots before it?

Looking forward to the 1.1.1 firmware update anyway. Being able to bring up the iPod controls overlay will be sweet, and the double tap space bar for period sounds very handy.

Doesn't OS X put the desktop icons on the right hand side by default? This is just following that behavior on the phone.

I just got the iPhone are you guys talking about an option in the Maps icon? or something else because I was hoping for some kind of GPS on this thing.

It's a new program that you can install on a hacked iPhone that pin points your location by pinging nearby cell towers.

Why would you think there would be GPS on the thing? It's been clearly stated a number of times that it doesn't.

You dont need a hacked iphone... just need to install the installer.app program, and its in there... unless you consider that to be a hacked iphone...

Well, yeah, actually I do, since you need to get the installer.app program onto your iPhone to make it, and other apps, to work. I know it's not a major issue, but it's also not a "stock" iPhone.

I have now "jumped in" and I really really miss the little things like the keyboard of the treo. Are there any instant messenger programs out for this doohickey?

iphone.beejive.com

and if you want to hack ur phone, u can get the installer.app program and their is a decent chat program in there, called Mobie chat... So far I have been enjoying the beejive one.

So I have a question... trying to see if anyone else has this issue.

I have my BT Jawbone paired with my iphone, and it works great... The only issue I have is if I am sitting in my room at my PC and my phone is right next to me and I get a call, when I pick up it gives me the audio source box (Jawbone, iPhone, Speaker). I always pick the iPhone option and then I can talk normally... however during my call at random times it will just switch over to my Jawbone, and then I have to hit the iphone button again under audio sources, and then and only then will it stay on the iphone for the remainder of the call. Has anyone else experienced this?

I recently realized I kind of need my email with me everywhere I go. So for the past couple days, I've been researching all the different types of PDAs and smartphones as well as the different data plans available and I just have no idea which would be best for my needs. I'm currently on T-Mobile but not under contract. I'd prefer to stay on T-Mobile if I can.

I just need to be able to check my email accounts (.edu, Yahoo, various personal domains) anywhere. Having the email pushed automatically would be great but I don't want to pay for some expansive data plan for that feature.

I think probably my best option would be to get an iPhone, unlock it, and use the 5.99 T-Mobileweb. It's just that I've read less than amazing things about iPhone's mail capabilities (iPodLounge basically says mail is the weakest aspect of the iPhone).

Opinions? Maybe I should get a Blackberry or something?

Also, what's the final verdict on the keyboard? Probably not the best if I'm going to be using it for email?

If you hack your iphone and Apple comes out with something that bricks it, do you really want to deal with that?

Why not just get the iphone and switch to AT&T and setup all your e-mail accounts on the iphone, so you can check them all from one phone...

The keyboard, for me at least, is fine.... if I misspell a word, it auto corrects it for me, but I am getting pretty good at not making mistakes using that keyboard.

The mail capabilities are far from the weakest aspect of the phone, I would reserve that for camera, calendar, or weather which doesn't show any weather advisories maps or link to weather sites.

Mail is a very serviceable application for the phone and I have absolutely no complaints about mail itself.

The keyboard is fine. Will take you a few days to get used to which isn't much different honestly than the learning curve for moving from a fullsized to a mobile keyboard. If you're used to a smaller tactile keyboard you will have more issues than the norm. Also, some keys are just harder to get right than others and since some applications don't work in landscape, you are stuck with the more narrow keyboard which can be difficult.
Autocorrect can be pretty damn stupid though - if it doesn't understand a word it will likely replace it with a near peer from its dictionary. Led to a funny 'Eat up Martha' experience yesterday when chatting with a friend.

Jailbreaking your iPhone is crucial in order to get the most out of the phone until Apple stops smoking crack and opens the platform to development.

Note if you need to go through a VPN, the VPN client is still awful shit so you may have issues there.

I haven't had any problems with the mail feature, but then I'm just using it with my main gmail account. I can see where it would be a pain for a business user or someone with several e-mail accounts.

The keyboard is fine. It has a learning curve, but once you get used to it, it's easy to compose e-mails and whatnot. Just keep in mind that when you hit the wrong letter you can keep your finger on the screen and slide it to the correct one. It only inputs a letter after you take your finger off the screen.

Don't bother unlocking the phone, the potential for Apple locking you out is too great and it seems like too much of a hassle. For $400 you can just get a Blackberry Curve with T-Mobile instead and not have to stress about your phone being rendered useless by the manufacturer every time you update the firmware.

Question for T-mobile iPhone users:

I've got my T-Mobile SIM working in my iPhone and I'm on the MyFaves plan. Does anyone know if I'm still able to call and receive calls from my "Faves" for free? I know I can't change my faves without using a compatible phone, but are the calls still free assuming that those numbers are still set as faves on my account?

They're no proof they're going to maliciously stop the thousands who are using installer.app so far. Unlocking to work on another provide, however...

Here's a great little editorial about the iPod / iPhone and Apple's current "closed door" policy. I thought it brought up some great points especially about opening up the kinds of media that the iPod / iPhone can play.

http://wilshipley.com/blog/2007/09/iphone-ipod-contain-or-disengage.html

Also, it appears that if you have a technical problem with a hacked or unlocked phone you may have problems getting Apple to help you with it. I would've figured this'd be common sense...like calling Microsoft to service a modded Xbox, but... there ya go.

Ugh.

So I'm not happy with iTunes' video syncing. I select "unwatched" TV shows, explicitly delete a show after having watched it, only to have that same (conspicuously "watched") show reappear on the phone.

So I set up a smart playlist of the videos I wanted, it looks fine. I marked it under the music tab to be synced to the phone. I even checked "include music videos". And--lo and behold--it never ever syncs the playlist, even though there is ample room.

What might I be doing wrong?

when u go into the videos tab of the phone in itunes, make sure that show is not selected again, because everytime you sync it will put it right back on the phone....

Motherfucker. For the record, under the video tab, one can change the combo box from "TV shows" to "playlists". Looks like an all-or-nothing proposition.

I mean a particular episode of a show. Say I want unwatched Futurama goodness on my phone. The default "most recent unwatched feature" should be smart enough to roll off watched episodes from my phone upon the next sync after watching them. It doesn't behave that way, however, even if I delete them from the phone itself first.

Is there a way I can dock the iPhone with two computers -- i.e. my work one and home one?

Also, the GPS homebrew is kinda neat. Except you need to be near Wi-Fi, making it pretty useless. D'oh

In Installer.app, there's a package called "SwapTunes" that I believe does what you're looking for:

"Swaps the iTunes library on your iPhone, with another, so that you can sync with two computers."

I always thought you could just authorize another PC or Mac to play your iphone/ipod... I might be thinking of something else though

You can dock it (like if you need to recharge it) on another computer, just like you can with other iPods. I don't think it would transfer any music unless you have purchases on the iPhone and have authorized your work computer to play 'em. The syncing would erase everything off one for the content on the machine you're currently docked with.

Yeah, my problem is that I can't drag 'n drop from any computer ala iPod. I'd just like to be able to drop music and whatever without being constrained to one machine. Looks like the homebrew app solves that, <3

Does it only keep track of the "Watched" feature in iTunes? As in, you watch it on your computer, and it won't sync it to the iPhone because it knows you've watched it, but if you sync a new episode to your iPhone and watch it on there, iTunes doesn't know you watched it already, so it syncs it back. Apparently the database that would keep track of that, doesn't send the info back to iTunes. It especially wouldn't know if you already deleted the file.

It's definitely quirky to say the least.

Just got mine! :D I love it so much. You guys were 100% right.

I have been trying to keep up with this thread, but I missed the section where video converters were discussed.

I tried Google, but there is a lot of crap out there and even more bogus advice. So, mind getting me up to speed?

What do you guys use for converting AVIs to a format the iPhone can use? (Never had a video iPod so this is new to me.)

iSquint is Mac only, right? I'm on a PC.

Is HandBrake is only for ripping DVDs?

What is the best resolution and format for video on the iPhone? This differs from the video iPod (classic), correct?

Any links outlining this stuff or utility software you recommend?

Thanks!

Has anyone had battery issues since jailbreaking and installing 3rd party apps? I'm looking into jailbreaking my phone.

Btw, this is the best phone I've ever used. Well worth the hype and now well worth the price with the price drop.

just do a search on yahoo for a program that will allow you to convert avi to mp4. I think I tried a program called imtoo DVD convertor. But I am sure you can find something more suitable to what u need

It doesn't, but it absolutely should. iPod increments play count. Apple TV increments play count. Why the hell shouldn't the iPhone?

In any case, I've gone with a live updating smart playlist to just give me the least recently played episodes of the shows I want. This way I can marshall the number of Gigs devoted to shows as well

My battery life has improved consistently with use.

But since installing a ton of apps, I do notice that Safari crashes extremely often. No idea if that's related

Thinking of jumping into the iphone madness and unlocking it to work with t-mobile. I mean I don't see why some have issues with this, they can't lock you out unless you update, correct?

Anyways, I've been with t-mobile two years and am able to get a Blackberry for $100. anyone seeing problems buying it and selling on ebay for profit? hahaha

Hope to get my phone soon :D

I'm one of the cool kids now that I picked up an iphone tonight ;)

I'm going to have to read through this monstrous thread to get all the cool info but I'm already confused about one thing. I picked the 59.99 plan and blew through the rest of the screens not really reading well enough but when I went to sign up for the account management at att.com it says it's 39.99. Why is that and do I have the unlimited data and email features? Thx in advance.

The 39.99 plan is 450 anytime minutes with 5000 nights & weekend minutes. The $20 is the unlimited data plan which is mandatory for activation.. 39.99 + 20.00=$59.99

I've been wondering the same thing. In the keynote, JobsChrist did say it would be "this month" but obviously the software works (itunes store that is) so the hold up must be packing in all the other great things, like ichat (not).

anyone actually order any ringtones?

I did one -- Freezepop's "Less Talk More Rokk." The process is very easy. I'd already bought the song so the extra 99 cents was easy to take. A friend of mine who also has an iPhone has bought 3-4 tones and enjoyed making them.

I'm looking through the songs to see which one I'd like to be a ringtone. None of the songs I want to use are part of them. Any site have a list of all the ringtone songs.

Only a day one but still pretty intrigued by the toy.

As a phone it's actually very average. At least compared to what I was using before. As an all around device though it's damn cool. Especially the internet stuff.

Funny story when I purchased it. At first I went to the At&T store. But I pretended I was buying it as a gift because I was debating about unlocking it and using T-Mobile service. Anyway the people at the store there are so aggressive. They kept wanting all this information and kept pestering me to switch my service and on and on. The guy literally wouldn't sell me one unless I volunteered information to him so I played dumb and said I'd be back later that day. I promptly went to an apple store and just purchased the damn thing with out all the fuss.

probably a dumb question, but im trying to get wallpapers onto my iphone and i can't for the life of me figure out how the hell you get them into itunes as pics once you save them

edit: n/m i got it.
