ipod Appreciation Thread

Never thought id be one of the zombie masses packing around an ipod, but the Shuffle has really been awesome so far. Its perfect for my needs, and filling it with new music is as simple as pressing a button on Itunes. Its awesome. Plenty of battery life, and oh so small and no screen to worry about scratching. I also noticed when the headphones get accidently unplugged it pauses the music right away until I plug them back in and press play. Thats awesome!

Also for those on the fence about any ipod at all. Staples is selling the Shuffle (HP edition) for 100 dollars instead of the usual 130. Nice :D

Whoa, that is cool. I hadnt heard about that before.

Does anyone know if all iPods do that? Or any other MP3 players?

My Mini does it, although I am more annoyed than anything, since I usually wasn't intending on unplugging it in the first place and I really wish it would just stay in.

Well its not easy to unplug it. It happened by accident while I was loading the dishwasher the other day and noticed the light was flashing on pause, its mostly neat cause there can be accidents. Not to say losing 5 seconds of audio is a big deal but its a neat feature.

Yeah, normal iPod does too.

Honestly, the ipod is probabaly my most used electronics device I own. I always have my ipod with me. I use it as my stereo using the dock and a cable to my a/v receiver. It's like an aspect of my lifestyle, which you can't say for many things.

So with that said, I rather actually complain about some aspects of it since this isn't a defend ipod thread :)

1) The thing is completly scratched up. I can't even see the iPod logo on the back. I've never put it in the same area as either keys, change or anything abrasive. It just wears and tears easily.

2) While the above feature is awesome, it's also annoying when you accidently pull out your headphones. Gotta unlock it, plug headphones back in and press play.

3) The music quality definitely isn't that great. Even with getting rid of the default headphones and getting a pair of sessheinser's (sp? german headphones which both look good and are very crisp)

So that's why I wish apple would change the direction of ipod to fix the above 3 issues. It's already small and looks great.

I dunno, my shuffle sounds great. How good does it actually need to sound? I mean with all the background noise filtering in even with good PORTABLE headphones and the fact that you ARE listening to compressed audio.

I'm no audiophile, but I just absolutely hate listening to music on the iPod. The quality is in the toilet.

Also, the iPod headphones are crap. The irony is that if you get good headphones/earbuds, they just expose the weaknesses of the iPod :lol

by the way, honestly, how can you use a shuffle? I don't mean this as a troll or anything, but a straight up question.

Like say for example, you want to listen to your um... skies of arcadia ost? great, listening to that... then you want to switch to your um... aimee mann playlist? How do you do that?

See, the trick to using a shuffle is having a music library only with songs you like. That way whatever song that comes up is great cause its one you like!

Yeah, but I dunno about you, but I get into music "moods" where I might feel like listening to some jazz, then some alternative rock, then maybe some crappy pop music I would never listen to otherwise.

edit - btw, you changed avatars like 4 times so far in this thread :)

iPod quality is fine for me.
My old Sharp MD player totally kills it...but the iPod is still alright.

The included headphones aren't very good... I replaced mine asap.

it would be cool if it just started playing when you plug it back in. you'd think it would.

I agree. It's a matter of NOT KEEPING SONGS YOU DON'T LIKE. I know it's hard for some of you to realize, but having a media player full of stuff you don't like is retarded.

An iPod (Shuffle) appreciation thread? That's unexpected :)

I'm with ya, MAF. The Shuffle's good for what it is, and haters be damned. I use it exclusively for the gym, so it's notably ideal for me. I've had mine since the thing came out and despite being fairly rough on it, it still looks new; the thing is a great expendable music player and it does what it needs to do. I really like the integrated Play button shortcuts as well. As for 'moods', maybe I'm just stickler for metadata, but I've had no problems using Groupings, Comments, and/or Smart Playlists in iTunes to quickly throw together music and let Autofill handle the rest from there.

btw, the Shuffles now have an engraving option when you buy one from Apple's online store.

Actually, it is my understanding that the Shuffle has the best sound of any ipod.

...but that means actively managing your playlists instead of dropping it all into your single ipod and picking whatever you want to listen to.

Hehe, ipod fanboys fight amongst themselves :)

I had a shuffle for a few months, but it turned out to be wrong for me because I love listening to songs on repeat. That said, I think the iPod nano totally makes it useless.

I heard some other stuff about nano too. Thats definately a wait and see product, theres a bunch of weird shit going on with it.

I love my Shuffle. I have absolutely no need for an LCD on an mp3 player. It may not have much capacity, but I don't feel I need to have my entire CD collection with me when I'm on the go. Also gotta love the fact that it's 100% skip-free, it's portable, and looks great to boot.

I've never had my ipod skip on me. It's frozen a couple times, which I had to reset it, but never skipped. Even when I would run to make the skytrain or get to work in time.

I love my Shuffle. Since I got it, I haven't used my 10 gig 2nd Gen iPod at all. It's a lot more portable than my 2nd gen iPod. I can just stick it in my pocket with earphones and take it to work or if I go to any store, it's small enough to just throw in my pocket and listen to.

...and the normal iPod isn't?

The iPod nano does scratch easily, and it's more fragile than every other iPod, especially the mini. Still, it's an iPod shuffle with the screen and clickwheel that's half as thick and twice as wide.

I love my iPod. I wish there was support for FLAC, and that I do not have to use iTunes. :/

iTunes is a neat music hub, but a horrible organizer.

But still you have to ask yourself, should you NEED to do that to a nano. Does it seem like something you should have to do after shelling out 250 dollars?

Nope, it's something you shouldn't have to do.

But that said, I can't go back in time, so it's the best solution I've got. Newer adopters should be more cautious.

Bought mine at the Apple Store.

That has its benefits and downfalls. Benefits are a student discount and immediate availability (got mine the day after it was released). Downfalls are a stricter and shorter return policy. Had I bought mine at Circuit City or Best Buy, I'm sure I'd have an easier time returning it.

I heard apple stores have more than helpful taking back nanos, and thats to apples credit, but jeeze, they should give away free super ultra hard cases.

They do? In my experience, they really make sure your iPod is broken before taking it back. In my views, they're rather stingy compared to other companies.

That said, including one goddamn nanoTube with the nano would have saved people the strength of having to go through this brasso dealie. Hell, I'm sure these nano tubes are cheaper than the belt clip included with the iPod mini. =/
