iPod hacking

I know there are forums just for this sort of thing, but for some reason, GAF always comes through best...

So I've been playing with my iPod, looking at software for it, etc. One thing I notice that shocks me...

All the places I've seen that say you need to have a 3rd party piece of software to copy files from iPod back to Mac. Unless my eyes deceive me, I can use the terminal to go right to the iPod and copy files. Is there some catch, other than that they're not organized in any meaningful way? Frankly, I'm more comfortable with my own shell skills than the skills of freeware develops reading the iPod database.

Also, what other cool tricks do you do with your iPod, if any?

I highly recommend Pogue Press' iPod & iTunes: The Missing Manual by David Pogue. It covers all sorts of stuff you can do with your iPod and iTunes, for Windows or Mac, and it's a great reference book. If you live in an area where there's a Fry's Electronics, you can usually get the book for free after a $20 rebate if you check their ads. I misplaced my copy so unfortunately I can't recall how to copy music to your Mac, but I don't think you need a 3rd party app for it. I'll look that up a bit later on and see if I can't give you an answer.

I think you can change the 'Do not Remove' screen etc.

You can but it also limits your warranty so you might want to think about that.

But I was wondering, if you change the screen themes, can you reset it back to default?

There's this nice app called Podworks that does all of the above and I like the way it runs, but you didn't hear this from me.
