So I got a brand new 20gig iPod. I copied a few songs over, then ripped some CDs.
I started to copy the songs and then on the sixth one I get "
"Attempting to copy to the disk "iPod" failed. An unknown error occurred (-36)"

What the crap? I haven't even had it that long and I'm pissed off.

Well, you're supposed to charge it for four hours out of the box...I don't think that would cause the problem, but 3 hours in you shouldn't be transferring music, according to Apple.

Oh no! I didn't see that at all, haha.
Still, that doesn't make sense.

Its charging now, but I tried some other albums, and apparently its just having issue with some songs from one album. Eh?

Is it firewire or USB? If it's USB, I assume you have an adapter. Make sure the connections are tight and everything. Update iTunes, restart the computer, re-format the iPod and try again. If it happens again, then there's really a problem.

I had this happen once on my 1st gen ipod. It kept on doing it over and over when trying to transfer one specific mp3 onto the ipod. I reformatted the iPod, and ripped/encoded the cd over again. It hasn't done it since.

They were all ripped through iTunes.
And I'm using the firewire.

this may sound stupid but is it formatted for mac (if you're on a mac) or pc if you're on a pc? most of the errors i've had have been formatting related.

I bought a new one two weeks ago, but I'm still afraid for it to leave my room. I swear it will not go outside until at least one of the many cases I've ordered arrives.

Three hundred bucks and it's useless to me out of the box...

I dropped mine the first week, then didn't put a case on it the whole summer. It's scratched and scuffed, but it's better that way. "The objects you own end up owning you." I love it and all, but it's worth more to me to use it as I'd like to than to keep it pristine.

My 2G looks like hell, and it was in the Apple case most of it's life. I'm content to wait on the 4G cases, not like I have more than 10 gb of music anyhow.

But I agree that it is hilarious how we treat these iPods. I was chuckling to myself as I ordered an extra hundred bucks of accessories even. The iPod doesn't need protection, it's durable as all hell. But fuck is it pretty. So we spend more money to protect the finish on an already durable product. If I could stand to use an iRiver I wouldn't have this problem, but I ain't using two cords!!

BTW, by "we" I meant me and any other shithead on iPodlounge . To those users, out of the box the thing is pointless without a proper case and, for me, a remote.

I formatted the iPod and the same two songs had issues getting uploaded to the iPod, so I re-ripped the CD (Abbey Road if anyone cares) but before I did, I noticed a smudge on the disc. I cleaned it up, ripped and it copied fine.
