iPod: Just a hard disk with a 'play' button

Wow... see, that's the kind of insight I expect from a site dedicated to engineering... and it only took what, two or three years to figure out?

Well it's not like what the article said is made up or entirely without merit.

iPods are nice machines, but they're far from flawless and I could easily see some people disliking it. If it was less successful, it wouldn't be an issue, but because iPods have somehow become the must have MP3 players people feel differently and at the prices they're selling, perhaps someone should ask the question whether Apple is ripping off consumers or giving us real value for the dollar if, for all its worth, we are buying mini hard drives with a play button as the article puts it.

I have an iPod and quite frankly, I'm not inlove with mine. It's nice to have a high capacity mp3 player and the styling is nice, but I wear my mp3 players inside pockets and my backpack anyways, it's no a fashion item for me as it seems to be with most geeks i meet on the bus. Other than that, I prefer use my tiny solid state MP3 players if I can get away with it.

I have and like my old iPod. Does what I need it to do when I need it to do it.

The problem I have is that this guy apparently doesn't even know that iTunes has options and selectable preferences which render his complaints, well, stupid.

So now that it's under debate, I'm confused: is the iPod a hard drive with a play button, or is it something else?

what he says doesnt seem so unreasonable...

Until you realize 1) there are options to turn off the problem he complains about 2) Apple has their reasons for making iTunes a one way street but 3) you can easily pull them off the iPod via easily downloadable tools and 4) what the fuck else did he want from his HDD with a play button? The ability to use the HDD as a regular HDD? Oh wait you can. So what's his problem other than obviously wanting to smack talk Apple and preach his supposed intellectual superiority?

Like zillions of others, I've got an iPod. But, unlike every other mammal on the planet, I don't think it's all that great.
Think you're funny with your "omg, otherz don't udnerstand tehonologamy so they are just teh mamels lolz, I suck my own dick" attitude, do ya? Fucker. I hate people like this.

ipod isn't rocket science, its just that for some unknown reason, all other mp3 players are more shit.

the need (desire?) to have the scroll wheel and little extra navigation makes for some oddities - I don' t like how it times out to the now playing screen - there could be a button to toggle me between now playing and where I am in the collection. Likewise, if you start playing something, then go back into your collection and pause the music, there is no way to restart it - it'll start playing whatever you've got highlighted instead.

itunes makes ipod work properly - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Its a tad excessive, but you press MENU until you can select "Now Playing", select that and "tada". Then again I'm barely ever "browsing" my collection so *shrug*

Uh, the guy sounds like a moron. It's just a hard drive with a play button, but he can't figure out how to use it? OH NOES!!! I have to keep copies of my mp3s on my pc too wasting gigs of space!? Wouldn't you want to so you don't have to use your iPod while sitting at your computer? As for transfering music from your ipod to the computer... There is third party software for pulling files off your iPod library. The guy is grasping for straws out of pure Apple hate, or is just an idiot.

I love my hd with a play button.

FOr what they cost , the ipod isnt that great imo, other than that this guy just seems to want a different interface than what apple provides.

Yeah, and a DVR is just a VCR with a hard drive...

When it comes to worthless generalizations, there is no power greater than the power of Turley

iPod is the bare minimum when it comes to HD MP3 players. There are many other players out there that do what the iPod does and does it better, and also does more.

It's a fashion statement. It's also a generic term for DAPS. I use my MP3 player in the middle of class and the people who have iPods are for the most part insanely jealous. The ones who don't have iPods ask "Is that an iPod?"

It's a generic term for hd mp3 player. Being a generic term is nice but eventually it comes to bite you in the ass.

When's the last time you've used a xerox machine to make a copy?

you dont even need to use iTunes for anything. third party (free) software can completely replace it. and if you have a pc.. which it sounds like this guy has.. you dont even need 3rd party software to transfer the files from the ipod to your computer... (hidden folders on the ipod).

what i find hilarious is that this is coming from an engineering website. if this guy cant figure out such a simple device.. he shouldnt go anywhere near any other electronics.

IAWTP. I think the iPod is a fine piece of hardware, as I am using one as I type this, but I do get kind of annoyed when fashion becomes involved with technology, and either hinders practicality, or raises the cost.

The iPod is freakin incredible. No trash talk. It's probably the most flawless piece of technology I own.

:lol Wow, sounds like you're an everyday Che Guevara!

The author of this article is clearly a twat, I mean, he says he managed to delete all his MP3s TWICE, you'd think he woul have been able to learn something from deleting them all the first time.

Yeah, it's possible. Just press and hold the middle button on a song/album/artist and it add it to your On-The-Go playlist

Yeah, it saves them automatically - I've got like On-The-Go 1 through 4 on my playlist (can't be bothered to do it at home behind my computer)

When syncing through iTunes it even saves those playlists on your computer - so you can pick off where you stranded on your DAP - Still haven't figured out how to randomise the songs in a playlist though :/

Admittedly I've only had mine for a few weeks, but, *shrug*, I've had no problems with it so far. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, if you excuse the overused expression, to figure out how NOT to delete all your music.

I wrote the author this question:

"What do you think of the Cowon [20GB] player?"

Response:

"Sorry, I haven't tried that one so I don't have a clue."

------
Well he ain't tried the best then.
