I've dropped my Gmini plenty of times with no problems and as for built like a tank.

Well I can watch Aliens, Matrix Reloaded ect on the bus to work in the same form factor as a I-Pod owner....what can IPOD owners do to match me other then sit on the bus holding out their IPOD so that the whole world can see in the palm of their hands, while not bothering to tuck in the headphone cord swinging around FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE. LOOK EVERYONE!! I'M NEW MEDDIAA! I HAVE WHITE HEADPHONES! I'M COOL! BE MY FRIEND. I laugh whenever I see Ipod owners doing that...god damn Nathan Barleys.

Oh the irony.

Now, for the real reason for my presence in this thread. Any substantial rumors about arrival of 5th gen iPods? I'm about to grab couple of 4th gen ones for my project, but if the rumors are that the 5th gen is right around the corner, I might hold off.

ThinkSecret, who reported the initial rumors of the 5G Minis, is generally spot on with things. Moreover, they've been increasing in frequency, and with the Mini line long outdated, I'd say there's a very, very good chance of 5Gs being right around the corner. Personally, I'd hold off for now, depending on the time frame you're looking at to nab them. If you don't get a 5G, when they do hit, you should be able to nab 4Gs for far less at the very least.

As for the whole iPod debate, I agree with -jinx-. Hardly ONE thread goes by without someone taking the same old (often unprovoked) jabs at the thing. If not that, then someone starts asking about what MP3 player to buy...it's all getting really old around these parts.

And for the last time, people: iTunes and the iTunes Music Store are two separate things.

:lol :lol :lol There's so much truth to that...it's frankly embarassing.

As for the iPod jabs, hey whatever...I've had to go into Shenmue threads and deal with silly trolls from brain dead fruits for four years now, but I soldier on. Everything gets dumped on around here, and the higher the star is, the more people wanna drag it down (NASCAR's a perfect example). That's not an iPod thing, that's just life. Of course the trolling wouldn't be nearly as prevelant if idiot decisions like the Shuffle's lack of a screen weren't as violently defended as someone's fucking mother.

Any clues on what additions the next gen of regular Ipods will see?

I know what I'd like to see - an iPod Air. With embedded Airport support with AirTunes so that I can stream wirelessly music from the iPod to my speakers that are connected to my Airport Express.

power consumption on the wireless parts is still pretty hardcore. i wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

And therein lies the problem with mobile media devices today: battery usage. We need new forms of power so stuff like bluetooth headphones (please, let some crazy fool develop these) and all sorts of cool multimedia devices can be made. All of those portable video player things (the ones with Windows on them) have horrendous battery life and are too big to be called "portable". I demand better forms of energy!

If I didn't actively avoid any post with the word "Shenmue" in the title, I'd be glad to get after the trolls there as well. I have gone after console fanboys in the Gaming Forum, but I have a very limited tolerance for that kind of shit to begin with -- there are other mods who consider that to be their "turf," and they're welcome to keep policing it.

Let me be 100% clear: If you are using shitty logic (or none at all) in your "argument," then I'm going to be your worst nightmare on this forum. I have no problem with people saying, "iPods simply aren't for me." There are a lot of valid reasons not to buy one, based on one's particular needs and budget. There are a lot of people who quite articulately point out the benefits of other MP3 players and MD players, and I daresay that they have probably convinced others to buy non-Apple products. At the end of the day, all that matters is that someone feels they are getting good value for their money...but "value" is only meaningful to the individual.

Characterizing every iPod owner as a hipster wannabe blinded by white styling and Apple marketing, however, is going to have consequences.

I'm a smart ass internet nerd that reads message boards and DOES know that other companies make mp3 players and that there are iAudios and colour iRivers and Sony HDDs etc. and i still bought an iPod. Why does everyone that bought a different mp3 player think that they're the second coming of Christ that has seen the light and is 10x smarter than anyone owning an iPod?

I never even fill my ipod mini with songs. they rock and the smaller size is a really big plus I think. Normal Ipods just look so huge to me now.

To be fair, most iPod "bashers" don't get started until some iPod whore starts the whole "iPods are TEH BEST MP3 players EVAR" ramble. It definitely is the most popular, and maybe the "cyootest" as well, but clearly, an iPod isn't the best hard drive MP3 player, so such reactions are inevitable.

Anyways, back to discussion at hand: My project depends on the data connector on the bottom being unchanged. What do you guys think is the chance that the 5G pods will change the connector in any way? I'm thinking slim, but never say never.....

As long as anyone who has a non-positive thing to say about iPod isn't classified as a bigoted Apple-hatin' parasite, it's fine with me. Consistency is all I want to see.

Apple is due to drop another iPod bomb on Wednesday with a shakeup of the line. The regular iPod we know and love will be dropped and replaced with a new 30GB iPod photo ($349) and a 60GB iPod photo ($449). The iPod mini also gets a shakeup with the "Gold" being dropped and new 6GB iPod mini ($249) with color screens being introduced. A regular 4GB iPod mini ($199) will remain.

how do those planned prices compare to the 20 and 40 GB standard ipods? I think 20GB would be plenty for me, and price isn't *too* bad.

30GB photopod is only $50 more than the 20GB one, according to that rumor.

if I can get an iPod mini for $200, why would anybody want a $150 shuffle?

I was going to go for the shuffle for sure, but I'll wait a few more days to see if any of these rumors pan out...

can you go running with the mini's? I was thinking a shuffle would be cool (if I were to get a portable mp3 player) because it's flash based and all.

Do you run/excercise for hours? I think 512MB/1GB flash player is a bit accessive for that purpose. A 128MB (should be like 2 hours of playback) player should be fine for that, and they go for like $50.

I want a shuffle to listen to random language lessons and a few songs so the 512mb seems like a good buy, but if I really wanted to stuff the sucker with even more lessons I think I would go for the 1 gig...

w/ a student discount a 1 gig would cost me like $140, $40 more than the $99, which is the one I planned to get, but I considered both...

maybe I'll get a $99 shuffle and a $199 mini (for music-only occasions) if they drop to that price, that would be a bargain considering originally the regular ipods were $299...

yeah it's not as much space but it looks like it'll fulfill my need...

well. Right now I just use a CD player and just burn different mixes to CD and go. It works fine... I'm usually only out for 45 minutes or long enough for the disc to play. I'm not really in the market. It's just if I got one I'd have to go with an apple something because I've already bought lots of music on itunes (they got me sucked in with their pepsi promotion a year or so ago). Unless there is another player out there that I can use with itunes files.... But if I can run with the mini and not have the hard drive breaking on me I'd go with that simply because I could also use it for long car rides.

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
Dont want to go too OT, but Im about to get an MP3 player, but Im not sure which one. the one that Im looking to get is the Creative MuVo2 FM (5GB). I dont think that I will need more then that and Im getting it because its the cheapest MP3 player in my area with that much space. Is it a good buy or should I save up for a better one?

It is starting to get a little OT :)

I don't fully understand the 'mini' market (4-5GB). For me, you have flash players that you know you'll need to update regularly, and you just dump new music on there and refresh each time.

Then you have HDD players that you put your entire collection on so you can choose what you want, when you want.

If the 5GB players let you do that, then great. But if they are just a big flash player (i.e. you need to update regularly), then I don't see the point - just get a flash player, dock it regularly and auto update so you always have new music.

I'm too lazy to check and see if this has already been posted in the thread...

From TheRegister.co.uk

A Motorola executive has hinted that Apple will deliver a wireless iPod. This is hardly a surprise, as wireless transmission technology fulfills the promise of the portable music player, making this solitary, anti-social device into the social hardware it should be.

It's also one of the most popular feature suggestions ever entertained by Register readers (see Apple's Bluepod - Promiscuous Exchanges With Strangers). Once you can stream and exchange songs with your iPod to other people on the move, the device becomes an excuse to meet people, rather than avoid them.

"There are iPods that will ship soon with Bluetooth technology," Bogdan Nedelcou, Motorola's manager for automobile products told a French radio interviewer.

So while Bogdan may soon expect an ear-bashing for his "indiscretion", we're not much wiser than we were before. Last November a patent filed in April 2003 emerged to demonstrate that Apple had indeed been thinking along these lines.

iPod owners already can listen to their songs sans wires in their car, using a third-party, add-in radio attachment such as the Griffin iTrip. At MacWorld Expo last month, Bluetooth add-ons were launched from two companies, Belkin and TEN. But none of them permit the full potential of the technology to meet the ancient human need to share music.

However, we fully expect Apple's wireless iPod to be functionally crippled, with share and stream - the most useful function - severely limited. Apple makes more money in the short-term from iPods and doesn't feel it needs to expend its capital on pursuing a long-term legislative solution. Many in other quarters of the industry - from publishing to consumer electronics - see the need for such a reform. In the long-term, a collective license allows device manufacturers to sell more gear, rights holders to collect money lost to "illegal" P2P networks, and customers to enjoy more music than they ever dreamed of hearing. ®
