They ARE flash drives, no?

And that black nano is pure SEX.

$250 for 4GB is too much. Maybe after a price drop. Headphone jack being on the bottom sucks too.

I wanted an 8GB color screen mini... I guess I'll get a black nano but I'll regret it, I know it. =( I need at least 8GB between photos and music, too.

you do realize it is $250 for 4GB of non-skipping-and-can-take-a-beating flash storage, right? When comparing it next to a 5GB hard drive player it seems like a lot, but when considering you can take this thing to the gym and it can handle high impact aerobics or nice motocross or atv run, it is pretty nice.

and most people agree the headphone jack on the bottom doesn't matter because in normal situations it won't matter how the unit is oriented. and in the most popular two orientations (lanyard and arm strap) the bottom headphone port is actually better than a top one (speaking from personal experience here. I would appreciate a bottom jack on my photo)

I plan on buying one, but i'll wait till it either comes down or some extra acessories come out. The headphone jack is great i've been waiting for that kind of design for years. Headphone jacks should not be on the top.

That being said if your a student you can knock off some money from them and get them for pretty cheap. Totaly worth it, i cant wait to see one in my hands. Zen Micro out Apple Nano in.

I've gotta get one. Can't resist. Nice pressie for the wife if I let her have it.

Not sure about black or white, so I might wait until I see one in the flesh

How do the prices compare to flash drives? It seems like 1GB drives are still about £70-80, so 4GB for £180 is pretty good.

Stupid name though. Ringing the apple store I had to look around to see if anyone would hear me say 'ipod nano'. Its up there with asking for a 'fillet O fish' or 'granDAY latTAY'

I want the nano and I am pissed I bought the Shuffle back in June...

Damn you apple.

I TOLD you Shuffle is STOOPID from day fucking one! I ain't sheddin' a single tear for you. NOSIREEBOB!!

Initially I wasn't too happy about the jack being at the bottom (seeing as how used to them at the top that I am)... but, on second thought, it makes much more sense for pocket users to have it there.

I bought the 2GB one and I have around 13GB of music... but... I'm terribly unorganized. If I can get my act together and sort this out over the course of a week... I bet I find I only listen to around 1000 songs anyway. Uploading playlists every week won't be that big of a deal (and I still have a 20GB iPod... which I may sell).

I want one badly, but have other priorities. Money doesn't grow on trees, my PSP is hungry and I'm lucky to have an older (albeit not-as-sexy) iPod 3. So, no, not this year.

Looks like the lady will be getting a shuffle replacement soon :) I'll inherit that as it's perfect for my bike to work and back, and transferring Office files/mucky pictures. I wonder what the Paris Apple Expo is going to bring?

Ipod nano looks f'n great. Kinda unbelievably good actually, and it rubs the tech whore in me considering how much electronic goodness is packed into something so small and sleek.

Do ipods allow the music (and other files) to be just dragged and dropped onto them? I was sure they do ever since the G2 model, but I've recently heard otherwise?

Why does that suck? It seems more logical to me as that would make it more streamlined to put it back into the pants pocket after you've been using the controls.

That looks pretty bad. They should concentrate on shrinking the NW-HD5 model down, and adding the much needed 2-way drag and drop feature in firmware. It's the best MP3 player they made so far, and as far as audio quality goes it beats pretty much everything else.

Wow OLED looks nice. I'd rather have OLED than photo-showing capability. I really would not mind getting one of these, but I don't have 6 or 20 GB worth of mp3's. If this has 3 minute quite charging time and 70 hours playback it might be something to check out.

sort of. you have to do all music stuff rom inside an app. Either itunes (most common) or something like ephpod. no you can't do it from explorer (yet. I imagine someone will come out with a shell extension sooner or later).

that being said, you can set itunes to manual mode and drag and drop from the ipod in there.

I have a shuffle which I think is perfect for me. Music + Flash based storage solution + smallest (smaller than nanotech!) is what I want.

Next iPod buy for me is going to be a 5G 80GB iPod video.

But the nano is pure sexy. I would buy it if it was the right item for me. But for me, 2-4GB is not enough.

Hmm, that kinda sucks. I'm used to just drag/dropping all kinds of stuff on PSP. However, more importantly, does iTunes transcode your MP3s into AAC when you drop them onto Ipod, or do they preserve them just as they are?

It transfers just as they are, but you have the option of encoding to aac first if you so desire, but it's not on the fly.

it only converts them too AAC if you tell it to within itunes (convert selection to aac)

basically you drag and drop your music onto itunes, then drag and drop the itunes entries to where you want them.

now by standard configuration, your iPod will autosync with itunes, meaning no drag and drop. so all you would drag and drop there is songs into playlists.

however, if you wanted to control everything manually, you should in theory be able to drag and drop by playlists or by song onto the ipod.

unless you have more music in your itunes library than fits on your iPod. In which case, you do things manually.

The shuffle also allows you to erase and randomly refill your shuffle with new songs whenever you want. i like that feature alot.

Great, that answers one of my concerns. Also, I've heard that Itunes can screw up ID tags in your MP3s if you're not careful with some option. Is there any truth to that?

If the black nano had a display like the sony one linked in this thread--solid color all over with only the wheel interrupting...

Then that'd be hot.

I SPAMMED ALMOST EVERY SINGLE SHUFFLE THREAD ABOUT HOW SHITTY IT IS!!! Back me up people! :D

So have I. sigh. As I said in the other thread, Apple is fucking brilliant, they've managed to get people to buy lower function products, knowing better ones are on the horizon.

I've never had any problems. About the only thing I can say is be careful when mass tagging your songs in itunes if you have mixed aac and mp3 in there. I added the Type column to my itunes display just for this reason.

Though usually I will just use Tag&Rename for all of my tagging. Works with everything, even m4p (fairplay protected).

I already have a 40GB 4G iPod and no practical need, use, or reason to buy this thing.

But I'm buying one next chance I get.

Complete tool bag, I know. But it's thinner than a pencil!

You iPod Shuffle haters.

It is still my favorite device to date. Those who don't like it are probably not using it correctly and/or bought into it without thinking whether its features would be beneficial to your lifestyle. The ability for it to store a different set of random songs everytime I go out is a HUGE plus. And having more than 512mb/1gig is a detriment for that kind of music playing because you'll have to recharge the darn thing before you run your random playlist.

How is that a plus over device that can store a lot more music (or all your music for that matter) and play it in random order?

If they had come in with a 4 gig and 8 gig nano I would have bought the 8 gig already. I already have a 4 gig iPod mini, I want more life.

I see this line replacing all iPods in the future.

eventually you are right. much like apple took away 6G right now to go to flash, eventually they will take away capacity from all "music players"* to move to flash.

*note that I believe eventually apple will move into the home, at which point the existing full capacity hard drive based ipods will actually become media centers. at that point the nano will become the new "ipod".. just have to get single chip flash capacities up there first.

If I win prize money in a debating tournament in the Spring, and if they reveal an 8GB model next Spring, I'll buy one. However, currently, I have no need for a more expensive version of my Mini. I have, however, run out of space...while I doubt I'll need 20, 8 would be about right and I hope to see an 8GB Nano next year.

Gotta admit, that is pretty fucking sexy. A lot better than the "bean" they came out with, what, last week?

And how many mp3 players have they come out with? It has to be in the sixties.

It'll be years before it'll be as afforable as 4GB flash sizes.
years? you ain't kidding. 1GB was king of the hill only 2.5 years ago, and now 4GB is ~$250 retail. Even if we say doubling in size every year (which is optimistic) you are still looking at at least (scribbles down and does some quick math) 4 years for 64GB flash carts and 5 years for 128GB flash carts.

IMO that Sony player totally owns any iPod aesthetically. But then again I've never really liked Apple's design sense.
aside from the OLED I think the sony looks bland and kind of like crap. Though the OLED is gorgeous.

ClickWheel > * (both in function and aesthetically)

the rating system on mp3s is so mother fucking dumb

DUDE I THINK THIS SONG IS 5 STARS! LET ME RATE THAT FOR MYSELF AND LOOK AT TEH STARS ON MY SCREEN.
