Well in the iPod's defense, that is pretty fugly.
*shrug* may be better otherwise, but I'm happy with my iPod

"The ipod looks better" has to be the most sorry defense I've ever heard for a product. Seriously, I hear this all the time, and who gives a fuck?

iRiver = cheaper, better software, more expandable/hackable

iPod = sexier

Since I don't normally find myself having sex with MP3 players, I'd pick the iRiver any day of the week.

And I believe you can use iTunes with the iRiver.

That about sums up my point.

iPod is an icon. iRiver is not. To be honest most people won't even consider iRiver simply because it is not iPod. It's sexy not just you to look at, but to be seen with as well . It isn't just that the iPod is sexier, but people feel an iPod make them look sexier as well. And that is worth the price for most people. It's not just the actual values, which iPod has many, but also the associated values that comes with it.

When I first got the first gen iPod, there was some exclusivity attached with it, but I guess so many people has one nowadays people look to iRiver and such alternatives for that same exclusivity. Perfect timing for Apple for release the U2 iPod IMO.

No iPod = no iTunes Music Store. It's still the best online music store with by far the largest catalog, and its seamless integration into iTunes is a big plus.

And the iPod Photo is pretty cool, too. Plus, there's a HUGE amount of accessories available for iPod from a large number of manufacturers, whereas your choices are a bit more limited for competing models.

In the same vein, people spend more time driving their cars than looking at them. And yet, people buy cars based largely on looks. What's the difference? Or, do you drive an ugly piece-of-shit just because it's reliable and get's good gas mileage?

If i were looking at a digital music player and had to choose between the iRiver and the iPod, i'd go with iRiver, no contest. It's simply more bang for your buck. Anyone who looks at the features list can see that. The iPod wins in aesthetics, but considering i'd be keeping it in my pocket most of the time (thanks to the included LCD remote), it's even less of an issue.

iTunes is a nice idea, but frankly i don't see a point in buying inferior quality secured digital music for a few dollars cheaper than buying a CD i can do what i want with.

Cars are more frequently in plain view plus they're simply bigger. Your neighbor's not going to notice you've got some ugly ass MP3 player in your hand when you unlock your door, but they'll notice your ugly ass car.

Way to make the argument even more ridiculous. A car is a multi-thousand dollar investment that is always in plain view. An mp3 player is a tiny rectangular device that fits in your freakin pocket.

So? If I'm buying something based upon looks, I really couldn't care less what others think. I make my purchase based upon what I think looks appealing.

Just saying, people buy all kinds of shit (clothes, houses, purses, wallets, etc, etc) based upon outward appearance. Why should mp3 players be any different?

Plus, it's not just the shell of the iPod that's visually appealing. Every other mp3 player I've ever handled has felt clunky and awkward in comparison.

Cool. Can you tell me where my iPod is, then? Given that I've got iTunes Music Store installed, I must have one...

Touche'. To be a little clearer -- if you have a digital music player OTHER than an iPod, you can't listen to music purchased from the iTunes Music Store on it (at least not without converting the music file to a non-DRM'd format) :D

The only advantages that the iPod has over the iRiver is that control is slightly more intuitive, and it can do on-the-fly playlists. Everything else- battery life, capabilities (FM radio, line-in/optical-in recording, built-in mic, functions as external hard drive, etc.), and price- sets the iRiver far ahead of the iPod in terms of quality.

I love my iRiver :D

Another round of alleged iPod killers...

Does this never get old?

If you had bought the wrong mp3 player, you would have to continually make threads in a weak attempt to justify that purchase as well. :D

WHO DEY!?
I think it's great if people love their Irivers, Archos Jukeboxes, etc. I just don't see why there needs to be a new thread about how one of them kills the iPod every month or so.

How about "The iPod is much easier to use"?

Ipod does exactly what i wanted it to do. Easy to throw all my CD/mp3 collection on the thing, and I actually like using ITunes. The fact that it looks cool is just a bonus. Personally, i could give two shits about having a mic/recorder, an FM tuner, being able to use it as a HD, or having my music player be "hackable". The ipod's ease of use trumps all that for me.

I find this thread to be most helpful, as I'm about to buy one of the two. Please continue jabbing at one another.

Living and working in NYC, iPods are EVERYWHERE. White headphones cords sticking out of trendy coats.

Aesthetics matter. Aesthetic value is subjective, obviously varying from person to person, but most people like to have cool looking shit, even with electronics, whether it's a computer case, a receiver, a cell phone, a TV, or an mp3 player. This isn't anything new.

I agree, the iPod is a great looking player and, at least for me, aesthetics DO matter when it comes to my technotoys. Technology should be as cool looking as it is functional. Granted, people can argue Apple sometimes has more of the former than later (and I'd be inclined to agree), but there's still 'something' about Apple's hardware that I like. Even so, I like my Nomad Zen Xtra. It was 200 bucks, holds 30GBs of data/MP3s/WMA/whatever, is small enough and still looks nice to me. Yeah, it's not as sleek as an iPod, but it's a worthwhile compromise for the price and the Nomads have infamously high quality sound output, and since I frequently hook mine up to the AUX input on my car's Clarion, it's important to me.

iPod will only get "owned" when people stop using the term "iPod" as a generic noun. "iPod" is virtually synonymous with "portable music player" for a shitload of people, and advertising your own product as "better/bigger/cheaper than an iPod" only reinforces the fact that iPod is cleaning up with marketshare AND mindshare.

Seriously -- it's like making a cola drink which isn't Coke.

Indeed. Someone should get these whiners a box of kleenex.

I've had my iriver for a couple of months now and I've fallen in love with it. Navigating on it isn't hard at all. My file tree is easy to navigate. Its just CD's>Artist>Album>Song. Four button presses and a little scrolling and I'm listening to music. I don't find it much all that different from an ipod except for the fact there isn't a scroll wheel. The drag and drop hard drive nature of it is great too. I used my iRiver to transport a large powerpoint to a class. Also I love the choice of codecs. I ripped everything I own to 224 ogg VBR. I have 2400 songs on it with almost 5.5 gigs left out of 20. I can't complain on the battery life. I'm getting like 10 and a half hours out of it and could be getting more if I used constant bitrate and 128 kbps but I like better sound quality. All for $290 from new egg. :D

EDIT: I forgot to mention the included leather case and remote.

If you want cons I guess you could say the pack in headphones suck. I didn't even try them myself but that always seems to be the case. I just bought some sony intra aural ones for like 35 bucks and I think they are amazing. People will ask you want it is and the only way to explain it to them is to say its like an ipod to which most will respond that its a knock off.

The iRiver can't do on the fly playlists? :(

Even my ancient Nomad Jukebox can do that. I thought it was ridiculous that it took like two generations of iPods before they had the feature - are most HDD mp3 players missing this? I'm looking to buy a new player and I do use this feature fairly often...

Both play MP3s, right? Both are supposed to be portable, right? Their ideal function is to play music and not annoy you when it's in your pocket. This is why the iPod wins: it plays MP3s and is flawlessly shaped -- and that's all I need out of my MP3 player. The iRiver feels like a brick.

People KNOW you're using an iPod due to the headphones. I gotta be honest, when I bought my iPod I did take seriously into account the fact that is extremely hip.

iPod is one of the few things around that really lives up to the hype.

Looks good, does what it's meant to, and does it as simply as you could want. The interface and touch-wheel work great, especially the click-wheel of the 4th gen ones. Over the years I've been through everything from Walkmans, to Mini-Disc, to flash mp3-players, and you'd have to pry my iPod from my dead hand.

I just love reading these threads when some Iriver (and what the hell is a river anyhoo, I fail to see the connection between music and rivers? Maybe I'm missing something) fanboy goes on a rampage to try and make himself feel better for buying an inferior product. All I have to do is go to Apple.com/hotnews/ and learn that iPod market share is over 90% for hard-drive MP3 players, and that nothing short of a new Apple non-iPod player will trump that. Bliss.

But I think that's that's exactly why there are fanboys for these things. iPod used to be special, but now it's got 90% marketshare, people feel that iRiver is the niche and they get that instead because they don't want to be like everybody else.

Oh god, if there's one thing I hate it's the mentality that once something is so widespread and popular, it has to be shit, and it's not worth buying. Why the fuck did it get so popular and widespread if it's so shitty!?

Same goes for music. Like the people who are obsessed with some 'underground' band for years - and then they release the exact same material commerically, with a big label, and they hit the charts, and all of a sudden all the hardcore fans are 'oh my god I hate that song now, because it's #1 on MTV!'. I will kill all these people some day.

Yep. And some Mac fans don't like iPod getting popular, they don't even want Mac to go above 3% marketshare. That's why those who call themselves film buffs always say that their favourite film is some Swedish flick in the 1950s that no one has heard of.
