Is anyone else deathly scared of roller coasters?

I went to Six Flags yesterday and it was the first time I've been on a roller coaster aside from the small carnival types. I planned on hitting Superman and Kingda Ka when I first got there but now I'm really glad I didn't get to.

I wanted to "warm up" to these big rides so I got on Skull Mountain (super deceiving wtf) and Batman.

I know the statistics are super safe and all but I couldn't help but think I was gonna fall or go flying off into the sunset and die. Especially since all I knew about ANY of these roller coasters were that they were "awesome", I had no idea what to expect.

Batman was especially bad since I had a seat all the way to the edge, I kept thinking that I was gonna fall and shit. It scared the fucking shit out of me. Doesn't help that I'm deathly afraid of heights too but for some reason I thought roller coasters would be different. It was the longest and most frightening 30 seconds of my life, shit.

It sucks since I was really excited about em' before I got on too.

I'm glad I got to experience them at least once in my life but I think I'm done :lol I feel like a huge pussy but hey, I'm okay with that. You are what you eat :D

Absolutely love roller coasters. One of my most exciting moments in life was being at the top of the drop on Millennium Force at Cedar Point.

I always get a little anxious before getting on one, but after the first dip all anxiety gets flushed away and I can enjoy them for the rest of the day without fearing a horrible horrible death.

I avoided them for a long time. (A local news reporter's son was decapitated on one when I was about 4. Which was sufficient incentive to stay away from 'em.)

Of course, my story has a cool ending. I eventually went on one and it was no big deal. Kinda unpleasant. I prefer those tower drop rides etc.

I was afraid of coasters up until a few years ago. Then I grew balls. :D Once you get over the fear of the initial drop, it's always fun.

I love them, but they make me get terrible motion sickness so I avoid them now. Batman was always one of my favorites though. Superman was good too.

I was until the age of 12. Then I got on a few big ones one day and *loved* them. Joined the American Coaster Enthusiasts, and went around the country riding them.

At the age of 19 it dawned on me that the 50 year olds in the club were losers so I quit, but I still love the rides.

I like roller coasters, but I'm too tall and my legs are too long, so there really aren't many that I can fit on. :(

When I was in Orlando this past month I walked past the Hulk and look at Hollywood Rock-it with trepidation. The last Roller Coaster that I had ever ridden was about 25 years or so ago (scream Machine over at 6 flags)

All it took was for my wife to call me a pussy, I got mad, got on the Hulk and loved it. I then did the Harry Potter Dragon Challenge and then Rock it.

I need more.

Always been a fan of rollercoasters. Always think the big earthquake is gonna hit when I go on one. Thanks, California:lol

Tatsu at Magic Mountain in LA is the best rollercoaster I've ever been in. Fast and smooth with plenty up crazy upside down hijinks.

That's what I pretty much worte you jerk :P

I plan on going to 6 flags NJ after I get back from the caribbean, and getting on all of them.

I've been on dozens of coasters, but SheiKra at Busch Gardens is the only one that made me uneasy.

Make sure to check out the ride video, which doesn't do it justice, but gives you an idea.

The horrific thing about that coaster is that it actually stops when the entire coaster is hanging over the edge at the top. And, you're not just looking straight down, you are actually very slightly tilted upside down. And you are a *long* way up. This is where the video does not do it justice.

Still, I rode it 4 times. :lol

Was when I was a kid, but eventually I was the only one in my family who would avoid them so I broke and started going on the bigger ones, glad I did that prior to going to Cedar Point.

The Hulk is so awesome, can't believe it's been ten years since I went to Orlando. I can't get enough of roller coasters although Oblivion at Alton Towers still scares the crap out of me every time I go on it. :lol

I've only ridden 1 roller coaster in my whole life, big thunder mountain at tokyo disney land. It wasn't so bad.

The thing is , I almost always take a pass when the opportunity arises. It's especially bad if I find out that someones ever been injured on whatever ride it is . Not getting on a ride that someones died on is basically my policy.

Join the Roller Coaster pussy club, card carrying member forever. The ride itself doesn't necessarily scare me per se, more like I get motion sickness, and THAT scares me more!

I used to afraid of most coasters. Then I managed to convince myself (with some help from friends) to ride Millennium Force at Cedar Point. This was so big and amazing to ride that it single handedly removed most of the fear. I still get a slight moment of panic at the very crest of a hill (it was the heights that got to me), but after that it is all awesome.

The only ride I've actually somewhat feared for my safety on recently was the Firehawk at King's Island near Cincinnati. It's a flying coaster where the seats lean backwards and the car is flipped for a lot of the ride. The harnesses had just a little bit of sag to them, and this was terrifying to me as it felt like they could pop open at any moment and send me careening off into the woods.

Millennium force turned my balls into ovaries. never again. I hate that feeling. I've been producing estrogen ever since.

I used to be deathly terrified of them. One of the side effects of a year I spent on introspection and self improvement was being far more able to stay calm and detached, and now I absolutely love them.

I'm more afraid of the rides that spin really fast and make me dizzy than I am of any roller coaster. I can definitely understand why some people wouldn't like them, but I love the adrenaline rush.

I was super scared until I went to Six flags with some friends and didn't want to admit to them I was afraid. So I rode them anyway, never looked back

Love roller coasters now, but not the really old rickety wooden ones

I used to be but they're really fun. They just take you around and back, and usually they're fast enough that all the twists and turns aren't as bad as they look from afar. The height drops still get me but they're all the same.

Very much so as a kid.

But since then I've loosened up a bit, perhaps being taller means they're not as intimidating any-more :P But there is definitely that ever present brief anxiety on the particularly big ones.

I do refuse to ride the super violent Wooden Coasters like Mean Streak at Cedar Point. I don't really enjoy having a headache for the rest of my day at the amusement park.

Very much as a kid, but I got over it. Now the problem is that they give me a fucking headache. Bah, fuck getting old.

That's a pretty silly policy... I mean what hasn't someone died doing?

I love roller coasters. I've never been scared of them either. When I was young enough to potentially be scared I just saw them as small trains the take a more fun route, and well I wasn't scared of trains. :P

El Toro looks unstable as fuck.

It is also the best wooden rollercoaster I've ever been on. That coaster is downright amazing.

It's scary in the sense that it makes you believe your are in perilous danger, but it's all optical illusions.

I feel most unsafe on Batman and Superman. Those things scare the hell out of me.

Kingda Ka is amazing and I don't fear it other than pulling a Fabio.

I live for roller coasters. The bigger the better. One of the best times ever was when I went to Busch Gardens up in Williamsburg and since it was a slow day they let us ride the same roller coasters over and over again without getting out or anything. Was a great day.

Next summer some friends and I will be traveling the country visiting all the best roller coasters as a sort of last hurrah before we all move away.

Edit: Now the rides that I am scared of but can never pass up are those swinging ships where you start out slow going left to right until you eventually do a few loops upside down. The worst are when you're up in the air for a few seconds looking straight down on the ground. Those are the one types of rides we can never get over how scary they are but they are almost always the ones we go to first because of the thrill. :lol

i think that is the whole point of a roller coaster. If you don't feel any fear, it will be FAAAAAR less enjoyable.

I LOVE rollercoasters. I just went to Thorpe Park a while back. LOVED it.

Nemesis Inferno, Saw Rollercoaster, Colossus, Stealth - all amazing. Particularly Stealth:

0 to 80 mph in under 2 seconds. Probably the only REAL scary coaster I've ever been on. A 400m rollercoaster with a peak height of 205ft. It's short, but the most intense 15 seconds of my life. :P

Too bad there aren't too many theme parks within my vicinity - except Thorpe Park and Chessington (which is really meant for kids).

I love rollercoasters, but I do despise a few rides. The straight drop rides are no fun for me, and make me a little sick. Of course, those are nothing compared to the dreaded tea-cup rides at local fairs. They can go die in a fire.

We have a thread about crying during movies and now being afraid of roller coasters. Damn GAF is turning into a pussfest.

ON TOPIC: Annual pass to Islands of Adventure owner here. I absolutely love rollercoasters.
