Is anyone else deathly scared of roller coasters?

I love them, but they make me get terrible motion sickness so I avoid them now. Batman was always one of my favorites though. Superman was good too.

Mainly my issue. I get seriously sick for the rest of the day -_-

I went to Six Flags yesterday and it was the first time I've been on a roller coaster aside from the small carnival types. I planned on hitting Superman and Kingda Ka when I first got there but now I'm really glad I didn't get to.

I wanted to "warm up" to these big rides so I got on Skull Mountain (super deceiving wtf) and Batman.

I know the statistics are super safe and all but I couldn't help but think I was gonna fall or go flying off into the sunset and die. Especially since all I knew about ANY of these roller coasters were that they were "awesome", I had no idea what to expect.

Batman was especially bad since I had a seat all the way to the edge, I kept thinking that I was gonna fall and shit. It scared the fucking shit out of me. Doesn't help that I'm deathly afraid of heights too but for some reason I thought roller coasters would be different. It was the longest and most frightening 30 seconds of my life, shit.

It sucks since I was really excited about em' before I got on too.

I'm glad I got to experience them at least once in my life but I think I'm done :lol I feel like a huge pussy but hey, I'm okay with that. You are what you eat :D
Once you realize that's the point of roller coasters, you get over it pretty fast.

When I was in Orlando this past month I walked past the Hulk and look at Hollywood Rock-it with trepidation. The last Roller Coaster that I had ever ridden was about 25 years or so ago (scream Machine over at 6 flags)

All it took was for my wife to call me a pussy, I got mad, got on the Hulk and loved it.

It's my favorite coaster. Great launch on that thing :D

100% agree. I fucking hate tea-cup rides or any other ride which consintently spins.

I once went on one and immediately had the urge to vomit. Never again I said.

Spinning Rides are the greatest thing ever! I could ride this sonuvabitch all day long:

I do realize it but it still doesn't stop me from thinking I'm going to die a horrible, horrible death :lol

One thing you can try is putting your hands up. On the way down and for the whole ride. If you can do that you'll develop a sense of fearlessness and roller coasters will become fun, not scary.

I used to be, but it was more worry that I was going to puke or freak out rather than the coaster crashing down or something. Finally got talked into riding the Rattler at Fiesta Texas, and now I'll ride just about anything. The lines scare me more than anything now.

I've always loved rollercoasters. Never been afraid of them.

I absolutely loathe rides like this though:
acrophobia4498.jpg

This one actually tilts you forward 45 degrees so that you are just staring down at the blistering hot pavement of death from 160 feet up. And it gives you just enough time to contemplate how easy it would be for your harness to break, causing you to slip out and terrifyingly plummet to your death. Fuck nah.

I love riding coasters, but for the past two years, every time I ride them, I end up feeling sick for the rest of the day, just not worth it now.

Roller Coasters are lame once you have been sky diving.

Skydiving is actually pretty boring. Anyone who's ever done it knows you just feel like a huge fan is blowing air at your face while you stare at a big landscape below. Now bungee jumping... that's exciting!

In conclusion: Roller coasters > skydiving

Nah, loved 'em since I was a kid. I get antsy near the top, but who doesn't?

doesn't get better than millennium force

I enjoy coasters, but I hate the ones that loop you. They give me headaches and I always end up with sore muscles from the harness. Don't get this from the normal ones.

I've got to be one of the only coaster lovers that hated Hulk. It was so rough when I first rode it this spring, that I rode it again later in the day just to see if the track was cold and I was missing something. It was just as rough the second time.

Manta is hands down the best coaster in Orlando to me now. Great ride.

I'm not at all scared of rollercoasters but I stopped riding them after reading a story on how they cause tears in your brain.

All it took was for my wife to call me a pussy, I got mad, got on the Hulk and loved it. I then did the Harry Potter Dragon Challenge and then Rock it.

I need more.

My nan who was around 65 at the time went on Hulk :lol

I allways like to say to whoever s next to me (gf or mates)
"remember that scene in Final destination 3?" or
"I wonder what would happen if this harness snapped off mid swing?"

Apparently im an asshole :lol

I would go on them but I get motion sick. For those of you who don't get it, you are lucky. Once it comes it'll ruin your whole day.

absolutely love roller coasters.

since you asked, here's my personal top 5:

1. Intimidator 305 - King's Dominion
2. Montu - Busch Garens Tampa
3. Thunderhead - Dollywood
4. Kumba - Busch Gardens Tampa
5. Incredible Hulk - Islands of Adventure

I like roller coasters, but I'm too tall and my legs are too long, so there really aren't many that I can fit on. :(
How tall are you?

yup, until i actually went on one

now i love em to death :D

it's like dipping your head underwater for the first time.

I went on a couple when I was younger... I did not find them exciting so I really don't care about them anymore. Amusement parks = boring for some odd reason. I guess I was a nerd who enjoyed bumper cars and racing around a lot more than roller coasters. Plus now a days I am scared of them and don't feel the hazzle of going on them.

Terrified of that shit. Always have been.

A few years ago, a female friend of mine thought it would be a good idea for me to "face my fears" so I could conquer them. We ended up in the front seat, accidentally. No big deal, I figured. I mean, I knew my fear was irrational and stupid.

So we slowly crept up the first steep peak, and my brain started saying "christ, this is high" and then started the downward roll.

Midway down the slope, my brain said "this is as fast as it can go that I'm comfortable with" and it SHOT faster, and my voice...oh my voice.

I have a deep voice. It was horrible. I made everyone around me laugh so hard they nearly wet themselves. I've never heard my voice go so high in my life.

After the brief, brief ride, I was shaking and vibrated my way to a bench and sat down for a good 15 minutes, regaining my composure. Fuck that shit, never again. Wasn't worth it. Stay away. Fuck that shit.

Since one person broke the seal...my top 5.

1. Griffon/Shiekra (Busch Gardens)
2. Manta (Sea World)
3. Montu (BG Tampa)
4. Apollos Chariot (BG Williamsburg)
5. Mummy (Universal Studios)

Love RCs but they should have a height limit, I'm over 6 feet and one time I went on this RC & had to duck because the ride was built like a tunnel so I would have banged my head on these metal bars if I didn't notice.

I'm deathly afraid of heights, but it's mostly the initial anticipation of roller coasters that kills me. Once I've been forced, kicking and screaming, into a ride, I'm usually good to go for just about anything.

I loved them when i was a kid and teenager, then one summer, i went there with a couple of friend, and its like some switch was off in my brain. I had no reactions, no trills, nothing. I never tried one since.

that just isn't true.

1. Griffon/Shiekra (Busch Gardens)

best one I've been on I think. they should build the same ride but 3 times the height.

so much wrong with this post. Skydiving beats the ass off roller coasters and bungee jumping.

What about people who raise their hands? That's just an optical illusion. I wish roller-coasters still scared me. They are a lot more fun when you're sweating in anticipation and scared to death. Now they are mostly humdrum and I find myself anticipating the upcoming sensations before the coaster even gets there.

You can always go here before a trip to add a little more "danger" to your mindset.

(although you're more likely to get hurt on an inflatable slide at a carny then at a big park.)

Edit: Here we go. :lol
Restraints open during ride on looping roller coaster
(July 6, 2010) - At La Ronde theme park in Montreal, Canada, four safety restraints opened suddenly on a looping roller coaster called the Boomerang. The passengers completed their ride without injury, as centrifugal force kept them from falling out.

The Boomerang is a common roller coaster type. The train is pulled up a 116-foot incline, then released. It then passes through three inversions -- a cobra roll and a vertical loop -- before it is pulled up another incline, then released, at which time it travels through the inversions in reverse. The restraints opened as the train began its second pass through the inverions. Only centrifugal force prevented the riders from falling out during the inversions. Had the train stalled or malfunctioned during one of the inversions, the result may have been catastrophic.

Park officials said that the mechanism which unlocks the restraints, which is activated only in the loading station, somehow activated during the ride. The ride was closed, but opened a day later after adjustments were made and the ride was reinspected.

When I was a kid they scared me to death, but my dad kept urging me to try them, assuring me that I would enjoy the experience. One day he managed to get me on one and that was it... I was hooked. I can't get enough.

Hope to head out to Cedar Point or Magic Mountain sometime. So far the best I've done is Universal Orlando and both Busch Gardens.

Love roller coasters. When I was 7 or 8 I was finally allowed to ride the Viper (Darein Lake). Fucking hooked since. The loops are the best part.

Love that shit, haven't been on any in years though. Best part is when you go to bed that night and it still feels like you're on one.

Had a friend accept Jesus while we were waiting to drop on Freefall (RIP) at Magic Mountain.

At first i hated them, until i was forced on to some of the scariest rides at sea world. Now i love them sooooo much the most exciting thing i can do aside from jumping out of a airplane.

Loved em as a kid, but I've avoided them since getting taller. I'm only 6'4", but all of the coasters in Australia are built for people of average height, i.e. < 5'9". Probably an irrational fear, but meh.

okay, not that sounds terrifying. could you care to elaborate?

i've read some articles linking rollercoaster use to brain damage due to the excessive g-forces you experience and how the brain is 'volleyed around' in your skull. brain tissue expands and contracts and could tear, possibly leading to internal bleeding. blood vessels may become blocked too.

fuuuck. sounds like i should really stop visiting theme parks. i'm only going to go once a year at max :\

symptoms include headaches and dizziness. heh. after reading that article, i began getting headaches and dizziness!

Oh man, you really should have ridden Kingda Ka. It's such a great ride.

My top 5.
Kingda Ka- 6 Flags NJ
Colossus - 6 Flags CA
Apollo's Chariot - Busch Gardens VA
El Toro - 6 Flags NJ
The Wildcat - Hersheypark
