Is Baten Kaitos worth $50?

I'm thinking about picking up this game after tinkering with Phantom Dust. I don't know if the game is on sale online and most places sell this game for about $50. Is this game actually worth $50? I hear it's a pretty good game overall.

What GAF says:

- too easy
- weak story
- voices suck
- no tentacles

What I say:

No game is worth full price. :)

The Good:
-Backgrounds are gorgeous
-Battle System is refreshing
-Good-sized length

The Bad:
-Battles take too long
-Too random
-Story isn't exactly...interesting
-The Voice-overs...HOLY FUCK.

Toys R Us sold the game with a free copy of the soundtrack. Maybe some stores still have these left, especially since it didn't sell that fantastic. I'd say try for one of those copies, if you want it.

However, Tales of Symphonia is faaaaaaaaar better if your looking for a good GC RPG.

I've been playing it for a few hours now, and the voices truly SUCK. Not only the acting, but the sound quality. They all seem to be sitting in barrels while talking. Is it a case of bad compression? Even though the game is on 2 GC discs.
Anyway, talk about ruining the atmosphere...but I still have the voices activated (you can de-activate them specifically), since it feels, I dunno, more relaxed to listen to what's being said instead of having to read and read. Remains to be seen how long I can stand it. :P
The voices really clashes with the music, which truly is beautiful.

The backgrounds are not exactly Resident Evil Remake amazing, but still nice to look at. One drawback with the pre-rendered backgrounds is that all the cutscenes are from the same static zoomed-out angle. No dynamic camera movements or close-ups, which make the cutscenes rather dull and you can rarely make out any details in the characters.

The battle system seemed kind of complicated at first, but isn't that hard to understand after a while...and it's refreshing, although I slightly dislike the fact that it's still a bit luck-based for no good reason really.

Story and characters are average.

See, I think BK is slightly better than Tales of Symphonia. The only thing that bother me in BK is the voice-overs...and you can turn it off.

If you like RPG, I think it might worth 50$. Ortherwise, wait, I'm pretty confident there will be a price drop soon.

A friend of mine got a copy on ebay about a month ago for $20, I'd check there.

edit: just checked out ebay myself... you can get it for under $30 easily. I even see a new copy that sold for $15.

No.

The voice acting is sometimes dreadful, and the storyline (thus far I've played for 3 hours) seems pretty cliche.

The voice acting sucks, but it isn't so bad as to make you not want to play the game.

The music? Oustanding

The story? It's pretty bad up until about 20-30 hours into the game (much like Tales of Symphonia). However, it picks up.

Gameplay/Battle System? Amazing. Not as good as Tales(nothing compares to the real time battle systems of the Tales series, IMO), but still enough to keep me entertained for 90 hours +

Overall, a great game.

BTW, the soundtrack that comes with the game at some stores is NOT the full 57 track OST

Americans bitching about 50 dollar games pisses me off. Just buy the damn thing, every game is cheap in the US.

I really enjoyed Baten Kaitos by the way... :D

The game is not worth $50. It's still an awesome game, just put your T.V on mute.
What? And miss the best part of the game? Why would he do something as crazy as mute the game, and be unable to hear the game's (incredible) soundtrack?

If you're talking about the beyond atrocious voices, he can just turn them off in the game's menu.

Excellent polish, visuals and music. Average mechanics and play design. Terrible characters, plot and voicework.

I was pretty dissapointed when it was all over and done (well, to the extent I played), but I was expecting a hell of a lot better out of the overall mechanics and whatnot.

Sorry, Dragona. This time, for a change, I simply do not agree.

Cube-wise, Symphonia is still the reigning champ, rox.

I prefer Baten Kaitos to Symphonia. The battle system isn't quite as fun, but Baten Kaitos's is hardly terrible especially considering how many people bitch just because they know it involves cards.

The voices suck, but you can turn them off. Problem solved.

I agree the story is cliche (the magnus cards might as well be crystals), but it does pick up. Considering Tales of Symphonia's story is acceptable for most people (not to mention bucketloads of PS2 games with comparably medicore stories), I don't know why this would be considered much worse. At least it doesn't feel completely random.

I actually enjoyed the main characters (well, the first three or so, mostly -- I didn't like the later ones as much) and some of the leading enemies for once.

I will admit, Baten Kaitos is the worst of the four Cube RPGs that are actually worth a damn. (Skies of Arcadia Legends, Paper Mario 2, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos).

But it is still a solid game with some bad voices acting (the only part of the game I found to be downright bad)

It's not worth it to pay 50 for the game after waiting so long, just wait for a price drop. I'm sure the game will be 30-20 by may.
I would get the game on ebay but my parents don't want to try paypal :( same with Ace combat 5... :\

You know, people said the same thing in November... "Just wait till January or February. It'll be 20-30 by then."

If you want the game, get it.

It's extremely slow (battles take way too long... and do seem luck-based), and the voice acting is really horrible (Chronos BLOOOOW! Aqua BURRRRST!), but it's a decent game. It's supposed 50-60 hours so if you like it you're definitely getting good value for your money. The story is still pretty weak but it's starting to pick up (been playing for about 20 hours). The world of illusion is awesome though, one of the coolest RPG areas I've ever played!

My girlfriend absolutely loved the game, especially the battle system (though I frequently complain to her about the game's problems) :P
